Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos. Kozol illustrated many examples effectively by showing the poor education and people’s unequal minds. He tried to persuade the audience to believe that the inequalities and education are savage. We can find the use of diction is effective here with an example “Robert Frost and Langston Hughes were ‘too advanced’ for children of this age” (55). He emphasized “too advanced” to express a feeling of absurdity. The poetry is the knowledge the students have to know and study; however, he regarded it as the ordinary knowledge and taught them with the Robert Frost and Langston Hughes’s poetry. Unfortunately, he was fired because of the “too advanced” knowledge. Here, he used the strategy revealed the poor education level vividly and for the school officials regarding that simple knowledge as not suitable for young students. It seems very ridiculous and frustrated for they could not accept the knowledge and fired the teacher. He used it here in order to let the audience believe that how insufficient knowledge the students were studying and it worked very effectively here. The second strategy he used is the diction as well. He illustrated, “In Boston, the press referred to areas like these as ‘death zones’—a specific reference to the rate of infant death in ghetto neighborhoods—but the feeling ... ... middle of paper ... ...he black one writing with a one-inch pencil stub. It was as the one was living in modern and the other was living in poverty. The inequality was shown by comparison with two girls and the author let the audience quietly believe the gap between white students and black students was big. According to the whole article, the author used the ethos at most for these were his real experience. He established powerful credibility. He showed many examples and the events he had experienced which could make the audience know directly with the education situation during that time and believe the ghetto people and the students were really poor. The uses of logos, pathos and ethos were a big success for each of them could let the readers understand the bad situation with the students and ghetto area’s people. From all over to everywhere did he show the savage inequalities existed.
In Ron Koertge’s “First Grade”, the author employs indirect characterization and foreshadows the affects of education by describing the speaker’s initial thoughts and beliefs and by writing in the past tense to show how education can limit students’ minds and rob them of their vitality.
Mr. Kozol is conveying the essay to intelligent people, who have the power to make a difference in this matter. The purposes of both writers are fight for civil rights and black liberation. They both use ethos, pathos and logos in their writings, which extremely useful in getting to their point to persuade the audiences to fight for their belief. The article I have chosen for my rhetorical analysis is #Gamergate Trolls Aren’t Ethics Crusaders; They’re a hate group because it seemed interesting. The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.

The piece that I will be analyzing is called How It Feels to Be Colored Me. This piece appealed to me because she described her point of view through the use of anecdote. Her perspective of being different caught my attention because most articles about being colored are so clique. This one is out of the ordinary because she thinks of being colored as a good thing. Illiteracy poses a threat to political, economical and social constructions that shapes the individual life. Jonathan Kozol laid out the idea that illiteracy is detrimental to human lifestyle. Looking back at my rhetorical analysis in writing 150, to sum it up, it was horrendous. It became exceedingly obvious that I had skipped the prewriting step. Forgoing this step caused choppy sentences, multiple grammatical errors, and horrendous flow. The rough draft ended up looking like a collection of jumbled up words. The first attempted felt so bad, I started over entirely. After the review in class, I used the examples to focus my ideas and build off what other people had done. For example, the review helped me to clarify my knowledge and use of Kairos. Once done, it was peer reviewed by my group again. In “Against School” by John Gatto, he argues that the modern schooling system of America is slowly but surely corrupting the minds of the country’s children. While many of the ideas he states are correct and accurate, many individual arguments he uses tend to stray away from the original topic. As the article goes on, the author uses sensitive words relating to the topic to attempt to reach us emotionally through the writing.
Schools are the basic foundation of knowledge, which is imparted to children. They give a chance for children to gain knowledge in various fields such as humanity, literature, history, mathematics and science. By obtaining knowledge, they are in a better position to know the world around them. A school is a society where faith and other values are developed. Schools also play an important role in a democratic social set up. Students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Schools are the backbone of a society, where children interact with other children and develop certain social skills. Education in schools opens doors to various opportunities that would not be possible if it had not been for the knowledge one gained at school. However, in the articles, “Idiot Nation” by Michael Moore and “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, the authors express their concerns about the degrading quality of education. There are many problems the education system is facing today, and several of them are having negative effects on the quality of the education that the students are receiving which are highlighted aptly by the effective use of rhetorical strategies by Moore and Gatto.
Throughout the studies of some typical issues in education that the authors cited in the three texts, this essay will explore the perspectives on education and key aspects in each article. Meanwhile, the implications for contemporary education and their significances will also be examined in this essay.
