The chapter about police corruption and responses by Joycelyn Pollock focuses on misconduct in law enforcement agencies. Despite multiple cases of corruption being highlighted and broadcast in the media, most police officers are ethical and perform their job with honesty and integrity. It is the select few officers who engage in corruption that need to be addressed, so that unethical actions can be stopped and prevented. Police misconduct can occur in one of two ways, economic corruption or abuse of authority. Economic corruption is when police use their power to benefit financially. This can come in the form of grafts and gratuities in which officers accept items of value in return for a favor, such as protection of a specific location or looking the other way during an illegal act. Abuse of authority is when officers misuse their power such as an act of physical abuse, psychological abuse, or legal abuse. Examples of police abuse are excessive force during an arrest, intimidation of a suspect, and working whilst under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Specifically, the ways in which it can be reduced on an individual level starting with the officers themselves. While greater community involvement and the awareness of the activities of law enforcement are good practices, I believe the most important part is focusing on the education of officers in ethics and proper conduct. If reduction of misconduct begins with police themselves, it is possible to prevent issues such as excessive force, bribery, harassment, and more from occuring in the first place. This should be done through continuous ethics training in departments, as research shows that long-term programs that revisit the training goals help program participants retain the information they are taught, leaving a longer
