The Arabs called the great sphinx Father of Terrors because they believed it witnessed all the horrors of history. 5,000 years ago they built or chiseled the rock to create the head of the great sphinx. the head is a portrait of king Khafre. The body of the great sphinx was 172 feet long and 66 ft high but it could have been bigger because of all the sand blowing around and shaving it down but we can only wonder at this point. The statue of Hatshepsut seated down is made with the material limestone. This limestone is lightly colored, which created a larger contrast with the other statues nearby. Her face was carved bringing out her eyes, eyebrows and other facial features. Her eyebrows also come slightly together towards the middle. Her lips forming a slight archaic smile. The dimensions are larger than an average female size. The statue is of great size, yet still in proportion. The body and head fit well with each other overall. However, it is greatly exaggerated in size.
These two statues are famous to the Egyptian art era. They represent the woman’s position and the man’s position at that day and age. Traditionally, the rulers of Egypt were male. So, when Hatshepsut, Dynasty 18, ca. 1473-1458 B.C., assumed the titles and functions of king she was portrayed in royal male costumes. Such representations were more for a political statement, rather than a reflection of the way she actually looked. In this sculpture, she sits upon a throne and wears the royal kilt and the striped nemes (NEM-iss) headdress with the uraeus (cobra) and is bare chested like a man. However, she does not wear the royal beard, and the proportions of her body are delicate and feminine.
The Egyptians created Ramesses’ statue 1279-1212 B.C. using granodiorite. The statue is currently being exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Its dimensions withouts a base are 59 3/4 x 23 1/2 x 30 inches (seems bigger than life-size). One must look at the statue from various sides in order to see its entirety. Ramesses II, known also as Ramesses the Great, ruled Egypt for over sixty years. there are thousands of statues made in his honor to proclaim his power and divinity.
King Tut was a fascinating pharaoh at most. There isn’t much on who king Tut was or when he was born or how he died. But some people have dedicated there lives to find out who he was. He was born during the Golden Age. He became king a surprisingly young age. He achieved many things and had an important job. His death was and still is a mystery to most. It was said he wasn’t in his original tomb. But he was eventually found. King Tut became a Pharaoh at a really young age and he had many achievements but died at a relatively young age. Although these are both valid forms of Egyptian art, they do not make up the entire artistic history of the country. On the contrary, perhaps the most replicated example of classic Egyptian art, from the Old Kingdom, can be found in their rendering of the human form. An interest in portraiture developed early in Egypt. (Gardner, 75) Whether painted on pottery, or cut into rock, the figures all had notably Egyptian characteristics. This is a copy of the sculpture of Athena Parthenos, dressed in battle attire, that was originally created by Phidias during the period of 447-39 B.C. The statue of Athena Parthenos was to be constructed, not of bronze, but of gold and ivory. The face, arms, and feet of the statue were to be made of ivory and the clothing, of thickly plated gold. The statue was an enormous size that towered thirty-three feet tall. The costly nature of the materials out of which it was designed was intended to overwhelm the viewer, creating a sense of religious awe.
Cleopatra VII, most commonly known as Cleopatra, was the last series of rulers called Ptolemies; this family ruled Egypt for nearly 300 years. Cleopatra ruled not only Egypt, but also Cyprus, parts of modern-day Libya, and other territories in the middle East. Cleopatra was born into an insane family with deranged beliefs, beginning with having to marry her brother, Ptolemy XIII, which ended with a war. Cleopatra’s life didn't get much better afterwards, she fell in love with Julius Caesar, and watched him get stabbed to death. When she married Mark Antony, she had three kids and lived as a family in Alexandria; however things didn't turn out so smoothly since she ended up committing suicide.
Joseph J. Ellis is a renowned Historical author and before his retirement, was a History professor at Mt. Holyoke University with a focus on the Revolutionary Era. Subsequently, his original publication of American Sphinx in 1996 won the National Book Award in Nonfiction the following year and in turn, made the text a worthy read based on the enigma that is Thomas Jefferson. As Ellis notes in the book, amidst the chorus of criticism and contradictions in the Jeffersonian character, no scholarly work can claim to understand the man’s real traits. To that end, Ellis informs his readers that his “chief quarry” in American Sphinx revolves around Jefferson 's character and the principles that propelled the man’s public and private life to the proportions
Long ago, on this same planet, but not that long ago, a civilization as powerful as the Roman but just a bit after the grand pyramids was constructed is what we now call Ancient Egypt. Before 1922 nobody knew who Tutankhamun was, nobody knew he even existed. Now centuries later, he is one of the most recognized pharaohs of ancient Egypt. In 1922 Howard Carter and George Herbert discovered King Tuts tomb in the grand Valley of the Kings, and the discovery of this unknown pharaoh’s tomb took the world by storm. The fact that not only was the tomb intact and showed no signs of looting, only raised the question of how this tomb, being located in the Valley of the Kings which has been victim to heavy looting, not found by others before? Another question emerges as to the size of the tomb, and how most of its artifacts were basically well preserved in such a tight space. I believe this is a great example of a cache since it does represent the lifestyle of Egyptian pharaohs
The sculpture is small, approximately 4 3/8 inches, and is carved of oolitic stone, a porous limestone. Since this particular stone is not found in the area, it is believed that the sculpture was brought from another region. The Great Pyramid is about 450 feet tall and covers about 13 acres. The subject of this pyramid was to honor the pharaoh and show him some respect. It took about 100,000 workers and 20 years to build the pyramid.
