Ethics are a very important aspect in any person’s life or whenever you have any involvement in an organization. Even though I think I have a good reign on my personal ethics, it wasn’t until I learned in the HESI 470 that ethics play a greater role than just within my own little world. As defined by Professor Hood, “Ethics are the rules or standards that govern behavior”. My duty as a Resident Assistant is to enforce the University's ethics with a mixture of my ethics that I expect from my own residents. As I think about the ethics I currently hold along with the University’s ethics I can see that there can be difficult situations in which your ethics conflict. Throughout the semester they have been caught ripping down your bulletin boards, leaving a mess in the community lounges, and creates an overall negative environment to whomever comes into contact with them. Their actions from vandalizing the dorm and constant disregard for the wellbeing of the community has caused them to be written up multiple times. If this student receives on last write up, they will be kicked out of housing. One night while on duty, you hear loud noises coming from their room. To investigate what's going on, you decided to knock on their door, they respond with opening the door wide open. Clearly under the influence, the international student is not in the correct state of mind and you can see that their room has illegal substances including alcohol and marijuana. Once realizing what they have done, they start to apologize immensely. They go to the extent of dumping out their alcohol and throwing away their weed before you even get to tell them to. There has been many cases where international students would cheat on their exams and they would end up with an “XF” on their transcript, which in turn, forced them to go back to their home country. As a RA, you need to realize that people have their good days and their bad days. You also need to recognize that if a pattern of bad days continue, then perhaps your resident needs help. Even though I came up with it, this scenario is already flawed. My recent community building skills that HESI 470 is teaching me has allowed me to realize that you must step in much sooner if you wish to ensure that problems don’t happen later down in the line. Regardless of that, since those steps were not taken, I would have to address the situation at hand. As a RA I realize that I must maintain healthy relationships with my residents, but make them realize that I am always a RA first. This being said, even though it would be a very difficult choice, I would have to write up the international student. It would be hypocritical for me to preach to residences to act a certain way and then go back on it for this one
