My journey to understanding addiction did not start with walking into Epworth United Methodist Church, but started in a classroom in the basement of Toledo Promedica. Sixteen students and two clinical instructors gathered to hear a young man give his testimony on his road to recovery. He speaks of his own experience and knowledge of opioid addiction, and how to properly use Narcan Nasal Spray. He spoke on his own overdoses and the first time he felt the feeling of being “HIGH” sitting in front of a TV playing video games. The path of addiction started for him at the age of 13, when his father who is a doctor gave him cough syrup for a cough; consequently, he would chase the feeling of being high for years. This same young man meets us in the hall of the Epworth United Methodist Church as he is a participant in the support group FAAD which stands for Family After Addiction or Death. …show more content…

myself and 5 of my classmates met in the parking lot of the Epworth United Methodist Church, where we were led to the basement by our clinical instructor. In the basement, we gathered in the corner of a small intimate space with dim lighting that allowed for a relaxing therapeutic environment. The space contained three small couches and a chair, the furniture was placed around a table. We took a seat with six women and our clinical instructor. Before the group started each person introduced their self and why they attend the group. Of course, we introduced our self as students of MCCC who was observing the group for an assignment. Unquestionably, each of these women are walking a path full of tears and pain as they watch their loved ones fight with the devil.
