Coming into this class, I figured we would learn about how to handle different kinds of situations from a teacher’s standpoint. As it turns out, the class is much more than just that. I figured there would be group discussions consisting of some controversial issues, but I had no idea how the course would make me feel as a person and as a future educator. So far, this class has brought to light the incredibly difficult decisions I will have to make as a teacher. Not only will those decisions affect the child and parents of that child at hand, but myself as well. Respectful of them, their opinions, and their standpoints. I have witnessed first-hand how hard it is to agree with someone who shows no respect for you and vice versa. It happens everywhere, and I have learned that as a future teacher, that respect is vital. In order for my students to learn, and actively engage in my classes, I need to prove to them that I respect them as a person. I have seen that in class where some students have little to no respect for their peers. In addition, I have also experienced that. There was one instance where me and a few other girls were targeted for voicing our opinions on an issue. We were told by another student that we were wrong. It seemed that he refused to actually listen to us and let it settle with him. As a result of this, he got no cooperation from us. We had basically shut down. We felt vulnerable and refused to say anything for a little while being scared that he would make us feel belittled yet again. With that being said, I know now that it is not only important, but essential to show respect to anyone and everyone, and also that you receive it in

Alyssa has shown me that by opening a book you are able to apply any story to life and if you are able to do that you are able to write about anything because there are so many ways of talking about life. You need an imagination to write, you have to be creative when you write, and by reading how others have developed there ideas you are able to develop you own. And that idea of development has helped me develop conversations that are seen to be irrelevant but are perfectly connected because of the tools (writing and books) my sister has shared with me.
As the time approached, my attitude toward student-teaching was one of confidence and in some ways overconfidence. I believed that I was equipped with all of the tools necessary to be a superior teacher. Little did I know what truly goes on behind the scenes of a teacher. Between grading papers, attending meetings, and preparing lessons, I would often feel overwhelmed. Still, student teaching would prove to be much more valuable than I anticipated. It would teach me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers, value or being organized and prepared, and lastly the resilience of students.
Coming in to this semester I knew I was going to be taking the foundations of education course but I didn’t know what to expect. After 14 weeks of discussing, learning, and exploring I realized that my passion for teaching has been solidified. I realized the reality and the responsibility that comes with becoming a teacher and I am up for the challenge. We have the power as future teachers to influence our student’s lives in so many ways. We learned that a teacher must carry themselves as the professionals that they are. At the end of this course there are questions that I asked myself that I would of answered completely different in the first week of this course.
I have been a classroom teacher with the same school division (and its legacy divisions) for twenty two years. I have therefore, been an active participant and witness to the multitude of changes and growth that have enveloped the realm of education and my school division. My role in the classroom has mainly included English and Arts instruction at the grade 11 and 12 levels. I have considered it an honor to be one of the last teachers involved in a student’s K-12 education and have deeply recognized this important leadership role, guiding our students by way of instruction and by example, through their final educational stretch and empowering them to be leaders themselves. I feel that I have helped to create a society of learners where students are being constantly challenged, where they experienced meaningful personal and educational growth and were empowered to celebrate their accomplishments whether they were big or small.
Great teaching requires sacrifice and consistently puts the development of the child first Esquith, after teaching for over 30 years and writing several award winning books, exemplifies this child centered philosophy of teaching. Parents are the first teachers of the students in our future classrooms. From the student’s birth until they enroll in a school program, the job to educate them is up to their parents. Once a child has started school, the job of the parent is not finished in regards to their child’s education; the role is just changing. No longer are parents solely responsible for their child’s education. Instead, parents now have a new partner, teachers. As future teachers, it will be part of our job to facilitate this relationship further and to encourage parents to be involved in not only what happens outside the classroom, but what is happening inside the classroom as well.
After spending some time reading about effective teaching, I found that one of the key aspects that seemed to come up most was communication. I believe that as a teacher you will need to have a range of communication, interpersonal and group skills. Communication is not just about being able to speak with your students , but also include writing, reading, listening with your eyes and ears, and also body language.( Ornstein, Lasley ,2004) For effective communication a teacher must interact and communicate respect , there should always be respect for the students, Parents, Colleague’s and their network of educational professionals . I feel that listening deeply and giving credit for the student’s contributions will encourage respect from the students, a great example of this can be seen in the (Online course: Becoming a Teacher,2005). A teacher today needs to have an ability to relate to and create partnerships not with their students, but also families, administrators and other professionals. This ensures that all persons involved with the education of the student are on the same page. All involved then work in harmony and help each other achieve the common goal of educating the student in the best possible way for the best possible result. (Wesley, 1998, p 80)
I learned a lot from observing Mrs. Smith’s kindergarten class about teaching and interactions between students and teachers, as well. I was excited to see what we were learning in our own class being applied to the children in her kindergarten class. I look forward to being able to apply what I have learned to my own classroom.
I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
I have decided to become a teacher because I love children. I enjoy watching them grow, and I want to make a difference in the lives of my students. As a teacher, I will do everything that I can to ensure that each becomes a productive, successful citizen in life. In order for me to obtain this goal, I will create a loving, positive, respectful, and safe learning environment where each student will be treated equally and be encouraged to do his or her best. Keeping this in mind, there are four elements that I must remember which includes (1) how young children develop, (2) what they should know and be able to do, (3) instructional strategies that I have learned, and (4) my feelings regarding parent involvement.
In today's constantly changing world, our children and youth need to learn inquiry-based, problem solving skills to that they may become successful members of society and live productive lives.
Children are our future and it is up to us as educators to point them in the right direction. I always enjoyed school and found it fun and exciting. As I got older, I only remember the teacher's that made a difference in my life. I want to the teacher that makes a difference in a child's life. Whether it be as simple as a teacher, or advanced as a father-figure, I will be their for the children.
Each relationship is different and each teacher has his or her own way with students. I have seen from a distance that for the most part students have great respect for teachers and therefore get respect in return. A couple of teachers expect respect, and since it is not earned, students do not always give it. I live by the thoughts that I have to earn the respect of the student body and model behaviors for them. The relationship I build with them is up to me, but in order for great things to happen, I need to foster individual relationships and show that I care.
