Recommended: Ralph as leader in Lord of the Flies

Is Ralph a good leader? A leader is someone who has the ability to take control of a group. In the book “Lord of the flies” by William Golding, Ralph displays many qualities of what you would call a good leader. Ralph took the step forward to guide, manage, and provide assistance to all the boys on the island. As soon as they arrived on the island Ralph, above all the others sought to get a community going and set up a camp to be able to survive, knowing that help might not be coming for a while. In the following paragraphs I will express my opinion on how Ralph is a good leader for the boys, and how he will continue to lead them through the tough times they are having. If someone is being picked on by the other boys he will stand up for them, knowing it is the right thing to do, he is very mature in his ways and has a strong moral compass. His life smarts and good intuition help him, he realized that their biggest hope of being rescued was by a ship seeing a smoke stack, by keeping the fire going. He organized different shifts for the boys to rotate keeping the fire going. When Jack decided to go hunting and let the fire burn out while a ship passed Ralph was furious because all the work he had done, to have that opportunity taken away by Jack’s immaturity; something had to be done. Ralph confronted Jack to try to set him straight and make sure that he would never disobey the rules again. This was the one and only time he didn’t try to please everyone, he was so livid with Jack that it didn’t matter what people thought, he needed to call out Jacks’ irresponsible actions, because of this I believe that Ralph became more sure of himself as a leader. Ralph was the right choice to be the leader no matter what the rest of the boys thought. He helped them build and achieve more than what they would have thought or hoped for. By taking interest and gaining trust with each of them, he became a favourite right away, and the choice for who should to lead them without any questions being asked. Jack

In chapter 11, Jack and his group have bombarded Ralph’s group and stolen Piggy’s glasses, so when Piggy asks what they are going to do, Ralph responds with, “Supposing we go, looking like we used to, washed and hair brushed- after all we aren’t savages really and being rescued isn’t a game--” (Golding 170). Ralph ends up handling this given situation like an adult. He can see quite clearly that the thought of salvation and maturity has no meaning to everyone in Jack's’ group.     The very first time Ralph is introduced to the reader, one can see his sense of observation even in the first sentence that he says: "This is an island, at least I think it's an island. Other than his leadership and purposeful qualities, Ralph is also hard working. When tasks are given out to the boys, such as building shelters, hunting, gathering food, the hard work of most boys turns into play and exploration leaving Ralph to do most of the work by himself with little help from others.
