Throughout our lives we face many problems, math problems, relationship problems, car problems etc. Unfortunately during our lives we also experience problems regarding our cultural and ethnical backgrounds. For some people these problems can be much more debilitating than most of the everyday problems people experience. The movie Finding Forrester is an example of this. Finding Forrester is the tale of an unlikely friendship that is formed over a mutual passion for writing. William Forrester is a reclusive famous author and Jamal Wallace, a young African-American boy that had recently moved to a prep school in Manhattan. Their friendship leads to William overcoming his fears of socialization, and Jamal overcoming his racial prejudices. I argue that this movie is important because it gives a realistic account of subtle forms of racism that is more common in today’s society, rather than the extreme outward forms in early American history.
The movie begins with Jamal Wallace, one of the main characters in the film, playing basketball with his friends. They notice somebody looking down at them up from the top floor window of a nearby apartment building. Jamal’s friends dare him to go up and sneak into the apartment and bring something back to prove he really went in. The man who owned the apartment was William Forrester. When Jamal sneaks in, he is caught by William and Jamal mistakenly leaves his backpack behind while fleeing. Later Forrester drops Jamal’s backpack onto the street. Jamal finds that Forrester had written notes in Jamal’s journals. Jamal later returns to Forrester’s apartment and requests that he read some more of Jamal’s writing. This is when their relationship begins. Jamal begins regularly visiting Forrester and t...

...r employment. The media have focused on the negative aspects which are stereotyped onto the African-American community. The media have not concentrated on important events in the African-American communities. Problems such as urbanization, education, poverty, and other elements have a significant bearing on positions of the black community (Balkaran).
In conclusion, while this movie mainly focuses on the more subtle side of racism, subtle forms of racism can often be even more oppressive because the subtleties often go unnoticed. The oppressors make no effort to change the racist behavior because there are not sufficient repercussions to force a change. From there, it is a slippery slope. Every unpunished action, subtle or extreme, reinforces the behaviors of the oppressor. Recognizing the problem at the source will be the key to unlocking a more tolerant future.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is an overused cliché that has been analyze by many people. The movie Finding Forrester, by James W. Ellison, shows this theme in a more analytical manner. The movie focuses on an unusual relationship between a young man, Jamal Wallace, and a famous writer, William Forrester. Jamal is expected to fail in school and only excel on his basketball career, except he excels in both and never stops trying to achieve his dreams. He is faced with several obstacles, including racial comment and stereotypes assumptions by his teachers, peers, and mentor.
From beginning to end the reader is bombarded with all kinds of racism and discrimination described in horrific detail by the author. His move from Virginia to Indiana opened a door to endless threats of violence and ridicule directed towards him because of his racial background. For example, Williams encountered a form of racism known as modern racism as a student at Garfield Elementary School. He was up to win an academic achievement prize, yet had no way of actually winning the award because ?The prize did not go to Negroes. Just like in Louisville, there were things and places for whites only? (Williams, 126). This form of prejudice is known as modern racism because the prejudice surfaces in a subtle, safe and socially acceptable way that is easy to rationalize.
“I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group,” Peggy McIntosh wrote in her article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack. Too often this country lets ignorance be a substitute for racism. Many believe that if it is not blatant racism, then what they are doing is okay. Both the video and the article show that by reversing the terms, there is proof that racism is still very existent in this world. By looking into A Class Divided and White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack along with their ability to broaden the cultural competence, once can see how race is still very prominent in our culture.
Not too many people thought of him as being anything more than that, due to the fact that Jamal makes mediocre grades in his school in the Bronx, he does just enough to get by and to maintain a “C” average. Jamal did not push himself any harder in the classroom than he needed to. Jamal’s passion is writing, He meets a famous old writer named William Forrester through a dare, who has been watching him when he plays basketball at the parking lots. Little do they know when they first meet what a great difference they would each eventually make for each other. William is the first to help Jamal by helping him in his writing. Jamal is a great writer but just doesn’t know it yet. William helps Jamal find himself in his writing, and Jamal prospers into quite a good writer. The help didn’t really stop there either. Jamal would tell William all about his day and
All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people different from themselves. Countless millions have suffered due to the bigotry of people that couldn't understand change or differences among one another. There was a time when any soul that wasn't blue eyed and blonde haired in Germany, anyone with darker skin where immediately classed as inferior and not human. Even now, when you are not aware, racism is still a considerable problem. But sometimes it isn't one person being racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self. The movie crash shows good examples of how racism against oneself, caused by fear and misunderstanding, is just as malevolent and evil as racism against another person. Fear is what makes people act racist. Farhad is one of many examples in the movie of a person who recognizes his own race and paralyzes himself through his own fear. Farhad believes that since he is Persian he is immediately being persecuted against and cheated. He flips out at the gun shop when the owner was insulting him which just furthers his fear of Americans. After the events on 9/11, which are referenced a lot in the movie, Farhad thinks that anyone who is Middle Eastern isn't welcome in America. Even after the gun shop owner was rude; his shop was destroyed by racist people who hated him. It is this same fear of being cheated because of his race that makes him very untrusting to people he doesn't know. He calls a lock smith to come fix his door because it won't lock. He immediately thinks that Daniel is trying to cheat him and steal money from him just because of his past endeavors.
Today, blacks are respected very differently in society than they used to be. In “The Help”, we see a shift in focus between what life is like now for the average African American compared to what it was like for them to live in the 1960’s.“The Help” teaches readers the importance of understanding and learning from our history. The novel is a snapshot of the cultural, racial and economic distinctions between blacks and whites in a particularly tumultuous time in American history. “The Help” encourages readers to examine personal prejudices and to strive to foster global equality.
Jamal went up to the apartment because he found that the man had written in all of his notebooks, but the man told him to write a 5000 word essay. When Jamal went to his school he was greeted by a person telling him that he got an academic scholarship to go to a private school. Jamal accepts the scholarship and goes to the school only to find an irritable teacher Robert Crawford. Jamal wants to do well in Professor Crawford's class so he asks William to help him become a better writer. When Professor Crawford sees Jamal's writings he does not believe they are his and quickly finds that part of one of his pieces of writings was part of William Forrester. Crawford calls Jamal out on this and tells him that unless he has William Forresters permission to use part of his writing he can not read his piece in a contest. Finding Forrester is an amazing movie about how anyone can be friends no matter what their situation or age is. The setting, characters, and plot made the movie
There are two main issues in the movie the “The Color of Fear” that I will discuss. These two issues include grouping people of color on the basis of the way one looks, and the attitudes of different races towards one another. Including also the idea that the white “do-gooder” feels that subconsciously racism is being taken care of, when in all reality it isn’t. The eight men in The Color of Fear candidly discussed racism not only as "whites oppressing blacks," but also the less addressed sides of racial trouble in America. A white man earnestly stating that he had never oppressed anyone in his entire life, and a Hispanic man talking about being afraid of driving in front of pickup trucks with gun racks, shows how there needs to be more progress towards ending these feelings in America. Stereotypes were openly declared, from Asians as "the model minority" to blacks as "lazy, violent, and dangerous."
The film, Finding Forrester, characterizes the unlikely relationship formed, between a withdrawn, hermit writer William Forrester, and Jamal Wallace, a basketball star from the Bronx, through their mutual proclivity for the art of writing. The plot of the film revolves around Jamal’s transitions to a highly prestigious private school and the events that led to Forrester becoming a mentor towards Jamal’s writing. Both reclusive in nature, for Jamal his academic endeavors, and Forrester nearly all aspects of his life; together, their shared bond opens them up further to the world. The title, Finding Forrester, refers to the mutualistic beneficial nature of their friendship, in that Jamal helps Forrester find himself, in addition to Forrester
The first social issue portrayed through the film is racial inequality. The audience witnesses the inequality in the film when justice is not properly served to the police officer who executed Oscar Grant. As shown through the film, the ind...
... supremacist gang, to rioting in an Asian owned grocery store, to finally brutally murdering someone. We observe as family ties become increasingly strained in every way, the viewer can easily conclude that Derek’s racism as well as his eventual influence on his younger brother ultimately contributed to their own downfall. As controversial as this movie maybe for the offensive language and brutal violence, it is a movie that deserves to be seen, and even discussed. It really provides insight into some factors within society that cannot be contained by the law or even deterred by even the harshest punishments. Even though American society is becoming more modernized as time goes by in terms of tolerance, racism will unfortunately always be prevalent in society and inevitably it will also lead some individuals to violently express their distorted mentalities.
... that the film opens with. While the story may be slightly dramatic and pieces of the story “coincidentally” seem to fall into exactly the wrong place at the wrong time causing the tragedies in the film to happen, the events in this film are entirely capable of being a reality. Racism and prejudice continue to be prevalent issues in our society, but like Anthony, we can learn to overcome anything that holds us back from putting unity into practice and making our world a better place for everyone.
If this movie were to be summarized in one sentence, one may say that no matter who you are, everybody holds preconceptions and stereotypes against other people. For example, in this movie, an upper-class white woman sees two black men so she clings to her husband, showing she is scared of them. Even though this woman had no idea who they were, she still jumped to a conclusion that they were going to harm her because of the color of their skin.
We can relate the discrimination and the prejudice to the color discrimination and prejudice in our reality. When some people say black skin people are not good and treat them bad and without respect. The difference between the movie and the realty was that in the movie the invalid was normal people and the valid was people created in laboratories without sickness of birth defects. The similarity was the way of one group sees another. The way the invalid looked to the valid as perfect and they never will be like them or have jobs like they had, and also the discriminatory way that the valid sees the invalid in the movie as degenerated
“We fight each other for territory; we kill each other over race, pride, and respect. We fight for what is ours. They think they’re winning by jumping me now, but soon they’re all going down, war has been declared.” Abuse, Pain, Violence, Racism and Hate fill the streets of Long Beach, California. Asians, Blacks, Whites and Hispanics filled Wilson High School; these students from different ethnic backgrounds faced gang problems from day to night. This movie contains five messages: people shouldn’t be judgmental because being open-minded allows people to know others, having compassion for a person can help people change their views in life, being a racist can only create hate, having the power of the human will/goodness to benefit humanity will cause a person to succeed at any cost and becoming educated helps bring out the intelligence of people.
