These passages demonstrate the order of crime and punishment in the Puritan era of the New World. Increase Mather, a Puritan minister of a Boston colony, gave a sermon in the year 1682 warning against the sin of sleeping in a sermon. Mather highlighted that the nature of man is corrupt, and they fall into the temptation of sleeping during sermons because of this. He believes most people do not considerate this a substantial sin and, thus, warns that God will personally deliver the punishment. Mather advises that men do not drink heavily nor overeat before sermon and pray against the temptation to fall asleep.
