Development is the process of growing, forming or creating into something slightly more advanced than before. Development starts during conception and ends during death. Development consists of three developmental domains which are, physical development, cognitive development, and psychosocial development. Each of which involve some form of growing or changing including the changes of moods throughout the lifespan. The Nature versus Nurture concept are issues that are found in stages of development as well. Nature which relates to the behavior that is inherited by genetics, and Nurture which relates to the behavior that is inherited or learned from the environment. With every developmental change or growth in a person’s life the mood of the …show more content…
When the crisis occurs that’s when disorders begin to occur. The first stage of psychosocial development is trust versus mistrust. The age group for this stage ranges from birth through one year of age. According to Erikson (1963), “trust is the basis of our development during infancy” (p. 284). During this age the infants/babies are more dependable upon their caregivers. Caregivers who don’t react upon the needs of the infants can be the resulting factor of a mood changes in the infants. The results can lead to mistrust and to even having a feeling of anxiety which is a mood disorder. The second stage of psychosocial development is autonomy versus shame/doubt. The age group for this stage ranges from age one through three years of age. During this stage the child wants to feel a sense of independence. If the child is denied the right to feel like he/she is independent, then they may begin to fall into a stage of having low self-esteem which could result into shame and even depression, which is a mood disorder. The third stage of psychosocial development is initiative versus guilt. The age group for this stage rages ages three through six. During this stage the children are able to initiate …show more content…
During infancy, and childhood the body’s physical development changes at an increasingly speed. During infancy and childhood, growth does not occur at a steady rate (Carel, Lahlou, Roger, & Chaussain, 2004). As the child begins to become older, they are capable of controlling their attention and behavior. The child then begins to experience mood symptoms or disorders more than ever. Having control over the brain allows the child to have control over their
At the beginning of this paper I mentioned that there are eight stages in the psychosocial development theory starting with trust vs. mistrust. This stage begins at birth to one year of age. This is when I should have formed a trust with my primary caregiver or caregivers. My dad was absent most of this stage, so my mother was my primary caregiver. Since she never taught me good behavior, right from wrong, and was uncaring when I was born, I did not feel safe or secure around her. I was told through family members that she was unable to hold me without me screaming all the time, and that the doctor said I suffered from anxiety at infancy because I could feel the tension of my mother’s stress, anger, and anxiety towards me. The beginning of me learning to mistrust, and feeling
Psychoeducation Approach is a therapeutic focus in which clients learn practical and positive emotional and behavioral skills to improve life adjustment, management of emotions and self-awareness. A psychoeducational approach appreciates the significance of education in changing unhealthy or negative emotional and behavioral patterns. Psychoeducation refers to the process of providing education and information to those seeking or receiving mental health services, such as people diagnosed with mental health conditions or life-threatening illnesses and their family members.

“The path of development is a journey of discovery that is clear only in retrospect, and it’s rarely a straight line” (Kennedy-Moore & Lowenthal, 2011). Because development happens this way, it can have many implications for teachers. There are multiple factors and processes that contribute to the variability of individual development of children, however, these differences can be overcome and teachers can give every child the support they need to achieve. Factors specific to the middle childhood years include vocabulary development, differing temperaments, development of attention, fine motor coordination, gross motor skills development and concrete operational development, including conservation, classification and seriation. Although they can create some disorder, these factors should not significantly hinder a child’s education, but teachers should adjust their lesson plans to accommodate all kinds of abilities, including physical abilities.
Perhaps one of the most common issues presented in Psychology today is the issue of Psychological Development. There are many factors the affect an individual’s development physically, mentally, and socially. However, perhaps the most controversial and debatable topic in regards to human development is the issue between Nature and Nurture. Nature and nurture are two opposite things that play an influence on the life of an individual. Many psychologists agree that both aspects of the issue play an important role in the lives of all individuals. However, there is an obvious discrepancy between the ideas of psychologists when discussing which aspect of development plays more of a significant role towards development. Even before psychology was founded by Wilhelm Wundt, the role of both nature and nurture have shown much importance people of all ages. After careful examination of both subjects, one can distinguish between which has more of an impact on development, but it is undeniable that both have an impact on the lives of every individual. The topic of discussion is the decision between which topic in regards to Human Development is more important in psychology: Nature or Nurture.
Lastly the contextual perspective takes a broad approach to development. This theory considers “the relationship between the individual and their physical, cognitive, personality, and social worlds that shape the individual”. () These approaches to development introduces the unique at to every part of what makes us human beings. The knowledge each theorist provides his approach to is like the puzzle to life span. “Each prospective emphasized different aspects of development. Individual theories in the lifespan is “based on its premises and focuses on different aspects, therefore not only in theory is “right” or “wrong” but considering the eclectic approach to understand development in all areas of the life span. In my view of why there are many approaches to human development is the reason that different aspects in life shape our development. The biological and environmental factors influence humans to have different personalities. The nature –nurture debate in lifespan development have several different points of views. The nature –nurture controversy questions whether genetics or environmental factors are causing effects in development . The nature “ referse to traits, abilities, and capacities that are inherited from ones parents”
A person is the way they are based on their childhood. People who have a happy childhood, with loving and caring parents, tend to have a happy adulthood. On the other hand, people who had a poor childhood, with disapproval of their own parents, usually do the same to their children or others around them, sometimes contributing to their murders. Infancy is one of the more important stages in a person’s development. Without proper care, and attention, it can have major consequences. Infancy is one of the most fragile and important stages in the development of a human and their emotions. Infancy is a crucial period for the proper development of emotions for the adult personality. (Vronsky 2004). The first twelve months of a person’s life are critical in the development of emotions like remorse and affection. When a child does not receive adequate attention and physical contact during their first twelve months, they could suffer personality disorders in their future. (Freeman 2). When a child does not get enough love, and affection from their parents, they will end up lacking in the ability to show affection or remorse. If they are not taught that from infancy, they will not learn it. Infancy is a crucial period in everyone’s life, and it should be taken with a serious, but gentle hand. As infancy can have major effects on the developing adult personality, childhood trauma can
A child is born in to a fast paced world. The child is influenced in every way, in every place, by every person they come in contact with. From the ages 1-5 the child is like a sponge, taking in all their brain can hold. Forming what will become, who they are as an adult. A main factor in this process is nature and nurture. Nature referring to the genes he/she inherited from the parents, shapes what the child will look like, if they will have diseases, if the child will be a boy or a girl, and much more. Nurture referring to the social, economic, surroundings, and culture. This shapes the child in personality, beliefs, and actions. Nature and Nurture are very important to the development of a child. If the child was to lack one or even part of one, he/she would be deprived of developing normally.
A human being begins life as a single cell. This cell changes throughout its life time to develop into a unique individual. Human development is the scientific study of the patterns associated with this change in accordance with the internal and external conditions of its existence (Papalia, Olds & Feldman, 2009). In exploring human development, there are three key areas that need to be addressed. These comprise of physical development, cognitive development and finally psychosocial development. Within each of these areas, it is apparent that most address three key issues. Firstly, is the development process continuous or a series of discontinuous stages? Secondly is there one path of development characteristics or does the individual take an active or passive role resulting in several possible paths and directions? Thirdly how do the genetic or environmental factors influence development? “Theorists such as Erikson and Piaget assume that developmental change occurs in distinct, discontinuous stages and all individuals follow the same sequence and order”(Hoffnung, Seifert, Smith, Hine, Ward & Quinn, 2010, p.34). While Brofenbrenner’s, ecological systems theory emphasises the broad range of situations and contexts in which development occurs making it a continuous process guided by the individual (Hoffnung,et al., 2010, p.35).
I believe that a child’s growth is developmental, and each child needs a secure caring and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and developed emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. I believe nature and nurture are the two aspects that influence in child development. Nature and nurture are different in several ways, but they both play an important role in child development. I believe that the environment that a person grows up in has the most influence on child development because children reflect what they are taught and what they learn from the people around them.
Since the beginning of time, fathers have had a profound effect on their child’s development. Over the years, the norm for traditional family dynamics of having a father figure in the household has changed drastically, and so did the roles of the parents. It is not as common as it used to be to have a father or father figure in the home. In this day and age, women are more likely to raise children on their own and gain independence without the male assistance due to various reasons. The most significant learning experience and development of a person’s life takes place in their earlier years when they were children. There are many advantages when there is a mother and father combined in a
In the study of child development, nature and nurture are two essential concepts that immensely influence future abilities and characteristics of developing children. Nature refers to the genetically obtained characteristics and abilities that influence development while nurture refers to the surrounding environmental conditions that influence development. Without one or the other, a child may not develop some important skills, such as communication and walking. The roles of physiological and psychological needs in a person’s life are also crucial for developing children. Humanistic psychologist, Abraham Maslow, suggested that humans don’t only aim towards survival, but also aim towards self-actualization (Rathus, P. 94).
Developmental Psychology is an area which studies how we as humans change over the period of our life span. The majority of the focus is broken into three categories: cognitive, physical and social change. The creation of who we are today comes down to the everlasting debate of nature versus nurture. This ongoing debate of what makes us who we are and which one is the driving force in development may be so simple that it’s complex. Rather than it being a conflict of nature “versus” nurture, it is very well possible both play an equal part in the development of us as humans. In the beginning, we start off as single cell in the form of a zygote. In that moment, where the DNA begin to form and the first seconds of life take place, the zygote is already experiencing interaction with the womb. In the process of determining why we are who are it is better to look more at the interactions of nature and nurture, analyzing how both have shaped us.
What do you think life would be like if there was no originality? What makes independent thought so important? As we grow and learn about life and ourselves, we must figure out the unique path that will fulfill us most. Sometimes it seems like the easiest thing to do is just go with the crowd and follow others. This way we cannot be singled out, and are propelled through life. However, living life this way does not allow room for any personal growth or expression. I have tried living like this in the past and sticking to the norm, but I was not being true to myself. I would follow my peers in the way I dressed, wore my hair, and even the way I spoke and acted. Through several years of this I found that it did not actually help me fit in at all. I was constantly awkward from being uncomfortable in my own skin and it was obvious to those around me. It was not until after high school that I found it in me to express myself. I started dying my hair and wearing clothes that expressed my personality. It felt good and gave me courage
