Processed foods are bad. They are the main reason why people all over the world are getting fat and sick. It’s easy to know the answer. Every time a population adopts a “Western” diet high in processed foods, they get sick.
Here is the difference between real and processed. The word “processed” can sometimes confuse people but it can be simply cleared up. Most foods we eat are processed in some kind of way, for instance, butter is churned, beef is ground in a machine and chicken can be separated. However there is a huge difference between mechanical processing and chemical processing. If what you are eating is a single ingredient food meaning there is no added ingredients or chemicals, it can be ground, cut, dried, or canned and still be organic and unprocessed. Meaning it is real food!
Foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances are what is generally known as “processed foods.”
Here are 9 ways that these processed foods are bad for your health and killing us.
1. Processed foods are usually high in sugars and syrups
Everyone knows that processed foods are usually really high in sugars and if not sugar than High Fructose Corn syrup which can only be described as sugar. When you consume high volumes of sugars and syrups it can be seriously harmful to your health
Sugar is an empty calorie, it gives you a false sense of energy but in reality it breaks down your metabolism and makes you tired. Sugars can also lead to insulin problems or insulin resistance inhibiting your body to produce or store insulin right and in result can lead to diabetes.

Processed foods are normally high in fats. They contain cheap fats, oils and fillers. Most people do not realize how bad and unhealthy vegetable oils are, if so people would not consume it nearly as much as they do. These oils contain crazy amounts of omega 6 fatty acids which causes inflammation to your body. (Gunnars, 2013) A way to avoid these types of unhealthy fats is to use natural fatty oils such as butter, coconut oil, or olive oils. However the best way is to avoid processed foods altogether!
My advice to anyone when it comes to health and eating healthy is to eat real food! Simple as that, when we eat real unprocessed foods we feel better and have fewer health issues. When we replace natural meats, veggies, and fruits with processed junk we feel bad and get sick. Its easy real food is the key to health, processed food is not!
The problematic aspect of processed food is all the added hormones, preservatives, and antibiotics that are injected into the food. Organic foods have none of these additives, and the pure characteristic of organic food is a valuable thing. Pollan (2008) agrees with this when he writes, “instead of worrying about nutrients, we should simply avoid any food that has been processed to such an extent that it is more the product of industry than of nature” (p. 424). I have a medical condition in which I am not supposed to eat any foods that have added preservatives, hormones, or antibiotics. This is because my body is hypersensitive to chemicals and, especially, added hormones. It can easily cause serious health problems. Pollan (2008) also added an opinion made by a food politics and policy lecturer, Gyorgy Scrinis, who believes that, “the most important fact about any food is not its nutrient content but its degree of processing” (p. 423). Just as Pollan mentions, the industries profit from people making poor choices. One of which is choosing processed foods over whole foods. Given the environment people live in, it is difficult to make healthier choices because processed foods, such as canned or frozen fruits and vegetables, packaged foods, fortified foods, and easy-to-prepare foods, constitutes of more than 75% of foods in grocery stores. In recent studies, it was discovered that most of the foods that Americans consumed are foods which had gone through so many processes and thereby losing most of its nutritional values. Unhealthy nutrients are also been added to foods as additive during production to either preserve flavor or enhance its taste and appearance.
