Research Proposal Examining the Effectiveness of British Prisons

1. Introduction
This research proposal aims to examine the effectiveness of British prisons, a topic that seems to be omnipresent in the media and in public debate. Allison (2014) recently reported that suicide and murder rates in British prisons are at the highest level that it has been for years. In 2013, there were 199 prison deaths, which included four homicides and seventy suicides. Moreover, statistics gathered by the Prison Reform Trust suggest that the rises in prison suicide rates may be a result of mental health problems, with 26% of women and 16% of men being treated for mental heath problems prior to their prison sentence; and a massive 62% of men and 52% of women are classed as exhibiting a personality disorder (ibid). Therefore, these statistics alone justify an updated examination of the effectiveness of British prisons, but there are also other areas that require investigation.
Moreover, there has also been some concern that British prisons are now too soft and provide an ineffective punishment, with a number of stories emerging such as the one by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, who recently spent some time in Brixton Prison with inmates there for a television show called Behind Bars. He said that conditions inside of British prisons today are better than many people experience on the outside, which gives inmates little incentive not to re-offend once they get out (Wardrop, 2012). Wardrop reports that prisoners in Brixton Prison get to enjoy 24-hour television, video games, DVDs, and a seven-day a week gymnasium – all at the expense of the British taxpayer. Therefore, the proposed research shall look at these issues, and more, in trying to determine ...

6. Closing Statement
In final analysis, this research project looks to provide a new way of understanding the current prison situation and its various manifestations. A comprehensive report of how things might be for those closely involved in the punishment and rehabilitation process might enable policy-makers and the public alike to change their ideas and help them perceive what it might mean to be in the position of officers or prisoners. The higher objective of this project will be to bring, through new knowledge, the necessary reforms that could leave both the taxpayer and those in the prison system more satisfied.
