The previous answer states that Ponyboy actually runs away twice during the book. That is correct. The first time that Ponyboy runs away is in chapter three. Earlier in the story, Ponyboy and Johnny are hanging out, and the two of them fall asleep as the hour gets later. By the time that Ponyboy wakes up and gets home, it is around two in the morning. Darry is worried sick about Ponyboy at this point. His worry turns to relief when Ponyboy finally comes home; however, the relief quickly turns to anger. Darry is angry at Ponyboy for making everybody worry so much. "I reckon it never occurred to you that your brothers might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you two thrown in a boys' home so quick it'd make your head spin. Darry immediately regrets his action, but the damage is done. Ponyboy bolts out of the house. He’s angry at Darry, scared, and humiliated all at the same time. Ponyboy goes and gets Johnny and announces that they are running away. It was plain to me that Darry didn't want me around. And I wouldn't stay if he did. He wasn't ever going to hit me again. "Johnny?" I called, and started when he rolled over and jumped up almost under my feet. "Come on, Johnny, we're running away." The second time that Ponyboy and Johnny run away is shortly after and a bit more out of necessity than the previous instance. Ponyboy and Johnny are out together spending the night in the park when a group of Soc boys corners them. The Soc leader, Bob, attacks and thrusts Ponyboy’s head under the water of a nearby fountain. Ponyboy has a dispute with his brother Darry and ends up running away to the park with Johnnycake. There, Ponyboy and Johnnycake get into a fight with Randy, Bob, and three other members of the Socs. The Socs try to down Ponyboy, so Johnnycake stabs Bob with a knife and ends up killing him. Ponyboy and Johnnycake run to a party where they meet up with Dallas, one of their close friends. He gives them a gun, money, and tells them to get a train out of town to an abandoned church. They are told to stay there until Dallas comes to get them.
While Dally strikes out with them and leaves in infuriation, Ponyboy and Johnny have more luck. At the end of the night they walked the girls home, but then the girl’s boyfriends showed up and that was the start of the dangerous and daring adventure the two boys would go on. After the girls left with the Socs, Randy and Bob, Ponyboy and Johnny stayed out that night and dozed off in an empty lot. Hours into the night Ponyboy woke up and realized he was meant to be home hours earlier. He rushed home only to get in a fight with his older brother Darry, consequently leading him back to the lot with Johnny. He tried to calm down, but then the Socs from earlier, show up and were looking for a fight. The two boys were left in a life or death situation and ultimately choose life and killed Bob. They ran to Dally for help, who was a genius when it comes to running from the law and the next thing they knew they were hiding in an abandoned church that belonged to a small town neighboring Windrixville. When Dally came to check on them, they found themselves unintentionally burning the church down and rescuing children from being left to burn. They managed to get all the kids out safely and Ponyboy was thrown out of the church window by Johnny just in time before it collapsed. Unfortunately, Johnny was still in the church which urged Dally to go in after him and save Johnny. The three of them were rushed to the hospital where they were reunited with the gang. He has no hope that his situation will get better, so he decides that he will just get used to living with Johnny and Dally’s death. He knows that if you get tough you don’t get hurt. “I knew well as he did that if you got tough you didn’t get hurt. Get smart and nothing can touch you.” (171) Ponyboy is trying to be more like the other boys by getting tougher and not feeling anything, but living like that is just going through the motions. “You’re living in a vacuum, Pony, and you’re going to have to cut it out.” (173) His family and friends try to tell him that he isn’t living. Since Ponyboy has stopped living life to the fullest he isn’t as happy. And if he isn’t as happy he isn’t honoring his friends memory enough.
On page six it says, ‘“Are you alright Ponyboy?” He was shaking me and I wished he’d stop. I was dizzy enough Anyway. I could tell it was Darry though- partly because Darry’s Always rough with me without meaning to be. “I’m okay. Ponyboy and Cherry start to talk and realize they aren’t that different. On the way, however, they run into Bob and Randy, the girls' drunken boyfriends, and the girls agree to leave with them in order to stop a fight between the Socs and the greasers. Ponyboy then gets home late because of what happened at the drive-in. Dally is mad and starts yelling. Sick of constantly being watched and criticized by his brother, Ponyboy yells at him. The two brothers fight and Darry slaps Ponyboy across the face.
Johnny is scared and uses a switchblade to protect himself, killing a Soc. Afraid to go home, Johnny turns to their friend Dally for help. Dally gives them $50 and a loaded gun and tells them to hide out at the abandoned church in Windrixville. They spend the night there and in the morning, Ponyboy and Johnny give each other haircuts, cutting off their long hair to hide their identities. After several days, Dally comes and takes them to Dairy Queen to tell them that the Socs and Greasers are having a war. As they are driving back to their hometown, they see that the church is on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny go in to save the kids, but Johnny is injured by a falling beam, breaking his back. Both boys are taken to the hospital and Ponyboy is released while Johnny must stay. After several days of worry for Johnny, the Socs and Greasers have their rumble with the Greasers victorious. Ponyboy and his friends go to the hospital to bring the news to Johnny but after only a few moments of visiting, Johnny dies. After a few days, Ponyboy goes to a court hearing for the Soc’s death, but nothing happens to him. Then Ponyboy goes back to school and has to write a report on something important to him. When he gets home that day he picks up the book he had been reading to Johnny, Gone With The Wind, and finds a note inside that says what Ponyboy’s favorite poem means. Ponyboy and Darry may have been brothers but they were also rivals for most of the book. If you were an onlooker, this conflict might have passed you right up. At one point Darry hit Ponyboy which resulted in him running away. “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard it knocked me against the door” ( Hinton 50). Nobody, in the entire Curtis family and friends, has ever hit Ponyboy before so when Darry hit him, all three of the brothers were in shock.

Continuing on, Ponyboy’s adolescent personal fable makes another appearance when he tries to put his home life on the same level as Johnny’s and a different level than his school friends. Johnny, Ponyboy’s best friend, receives beatings from his father frequently throughout the story, and everyone in their greaser clique knows about the abuse. Ponyboy’s caregivers, his brothers, never abuse him in the novel, but after one rare instance when his oldest brother, Darry, slapped him for being late, he automatically believes that his life is just as terrible as or worse than Johnny’s. After Johnny tells Ponyboy about the severity of his living situation by saying “I stay away all night, and nobody notices. At least you got Soda. I ain’t got nobody”,

At the beginning of the story Ponyboy is cool and smart. Then at the beginning to be different. Ponyboy is a 14 year old boy who has two brothers their names are Darry and Sodapop. He realizes at the ending that being on another person's place is not so great as he thinks it will actually be. He has been like his brothers since the beginning. But at the end of the story he realizes that he should think and be for others.
