Whenever people read poetry it takes into another planet, wonder how? Most authors of poetry have managed to take people into places they never seen before. Another example is alliteration that provides importance, and sometimes supports in memory because it is catchy and perhaps humorous. In the magical world of poetry, all the rules of formal writing go out the window and create a piece of art, something that is entirely unique. Poetry is also very unique because it rarely uses characters; instead it uses literary devices that describe everything in depth. Overall, poetry uses many ways and methods to intrigue its readers to what more and more poetry. With hundreds of spectacular poets we have today it is made possible.
“Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by: Dylan Thomas uses repetition, allusions, and tone effectively. The meaning of the poem is don’t death take over you. Always fight on, even during the last few minutes of your life. The author describes how he lost his father because he was calm and gentle. One figurative element in the poem is repetition because when the line, “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” (19) The repetition emphases on how it is important to not let death take over you calm and easily. The poems that were written above were especially good, because they all thought life lessons of what you should do and what not to do. The tone of “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” showed the author’s feeling toward death is a very strong dislike, because death is taking over his dad. The theme of “Paid in Full” showed that doing unlawful things to get money is extremely wrong. Instead he went to go look for a job, which was the right path to earn his respectfully earned money. Poetry is something that is to be read delicately and cautiously if one wanted to find meaning through the words. Readers have to be gentle and patiently ponder about what they are reading in order to find any significance in the poem. If someone is not patient with reading, they will not feel impacted by poetry and will not want to read it. In Billy Collins’, “Introduction to Poetry,” he uses figurative language to help readers see that the way to enjoy and understand poetry is by reading between the lines and being patient with how each individual relates to the readings.
Dylan Thomas wrote the poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.” It is about a son’s plea to his father who is approaching death. Two lines are repeated in the poem and addressed directly to the father. These lines structure the first stanza and collaborate as a couplet in the last. They are repeated a lot but each time, they have different meanings: statements, pleas, commands, or petitions. Repetition and rhyme scheme are parts of prosody in poetry. The rhyme scheme is built on two rhymes and forms of a pattern. The two rhymes are night and day and the pattern is aba, and in the last stanza, abaa. Even though the poem seems to have too much repetition, the fascinating imagery is more important and readers pay more attention to that instead.
Throughout his poetry, Collins demonstrates, in a witty and satirical voice, his insightfulness towards the objects, using numerous poetic devices, especially allusions and metaphors to effectively convey his messages, most of which revolves around the theme of death. Humor and irony are unique combinations Collins displays in many of his poems, challenging the readers to interpret his work from different perspectives. In “Introduction to Poetry,” Collins offers a witty comparison between the definition of poetry and various other experiments. He asks the reader to “hold [the poem] up to the light/ like a color slide” (1-3), “press an ear against its hive” (4), “drop a mouse into a poem” (5), “walk inside the poem's room” (7), and “waterski across the surface of a poem” (9-10). Rather than stiffly explaining the definition of a poem, he finds creative and humorous approaches to explain his methods of enjoying the poems, and promote the readers’ interest towards discovering the true meaning of poetry.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
Martin Luther King Jr once said“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that”. This shows us that light exhibits love, however can be destroyed by the darkness. In the book Honest Truth, a 12 year old, Mark exhibits that love is unbreakable when built a strong bond with someone. “Dogs die, but the dogs live as well. Right up until they die they live.They protect their families . And love us. Make our lives brighter. And they will not waste time thinking about tomorrow”-(Gemeinhart 140) . He shows the bond not breaking despite experiencing various consequences. In the poem, The Gardener XVII, the poet shows that light is inevitable, but darkness can lurk around.For example, in Line 4 the poet mentions”Your words are too dark I cannot understand them”(Tagore 4). This shows that dark cannot be incomprehensible, but light can show us that there are many paths of life. Despite these two passages being written years apart, they still use proper language to show us the differences between light and dark. The poet and author use of literary devices such as similes alongside vivid imagery as well as irony to ensure that the poem and the book shows the proper emphasis of the theme.
As Edgar Allan Poe once stated, “I would define, in brief the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of beauty.” The two poems, “Birthday,” and “The Secret Life of Books” use different diction, theme, and perspective to give them a unique identity. Each author uses different literary devices to portray a different meaning.
In the poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," written by Dylan Thomas, emphasizes resistance towards death as he repeats this exhortation in the last line in every stanza. Imagery is used by Thomas to create the theme of his poem and what it means. Although readers are unaware of the details behind the on coming death of Thomas father, the motives of the author for writing this poem are very obvious. Thomas intends to pursuit his father to resist against death and for him to fight for life. Through "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," Thomas conveys resistance towards death with images of fury and fighting to symbolize the great anger and rage Thomas feels towards the thought of loosing his dying father, though upon first reading then seem banal.

The three sources I have selected are all based on females. They are all of change and transformation. Two of my selections, "The Friday Everything Changed" by Anne Hart, and "Women and World War II " By Dr. Sharon, are about women’s rites of passage. The third choice, "The sun is Burning Gases (Loss of a Good Friend)" by Cathleen McFarland is about a girl growing up.

Poetry is a unique art form by itself, apart from all the others; it is widely regarded as the art of the soul. It is an art appealing to everyday life and its hardships, allowing poets to express their ideas more freely. By using, literary elements and devices, such as diction, extended metaphor, and tone, both MT Buckley and Stephen Edgar craft the overarching theme that “Life is Dangerous Business,” in their poems, “Birthday” and “The Secret Life of Books.”
He builds his father up to be a very tough & hard working man in "Digging". His tone in "Midterm Break", leads the audience to believe that he has never seen his father cry, until now. He sees a different side of his dad, now that his brother has passed. Both of the poems also involve death. He talks about the day he came home and how his brother looked when he seen him for the first time in six weeks.
When reading poetry sometimes one assumes that it is automatically an awesome poem because it is published in a book. Sometimes people also automatically assumes that if the poet is well known in literature, that his or her poem is automatically the greatest work of all. For example, one may assume that Shakespeare’s work is automatically great because his literature is used widespread in today’s society. But what one may not know about Shakespeare’s work in literature is that it was not seen as great as it is in today’s society. So the question we are left with is, what makes a poem great? Or on the other hand what makes a poem bad? A poem may be a great poem depending on its reader. No two person are alike in everything they do. People listen to different type of music, prefer different type of movies and believe it or not people are very selective about where they get lunch from, so why wouldn’t they be selective about what they read? When I was going through the anthology I fell in love with the poem “The Tale of Custard the Dragon” and thought it was a great because I love fairytale stories and poem, but if someone dislikes fairytale like things would despise this poem base on its content and its rhythm. Whether a poem is good or bad depends on the opinion of the reader and his or her point of view on the topic, rhythm, rhyme and flow of the poem.
The poem I have analyzed is Do not go gentle into that good night, by Dylan Thomas. By first reading the title, I initially took it literally and illustrated a calm night setting. This setting gave me a sense of confusion and blindness; unaware of one’s setting because the author seems to be warning the individual to not go into the night. Throughout the poem, the speaker repeats these two lines, “Do not go gentle into that good night/Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Since these lines are repeated at the end of every stanza, I focused on these lines the most because they appear to be important enough for the speaker to have them repeated.
