Philosophy of Music Education Music is a basic part of everyday life. What makes music unique is its ability to create an emotional response in a person. A music education program should develop the aesthetic experience of every student to its highest potential. Aesthetics is the study of the relationship of art to the human senses. Intelligence exists in several areas, which includes music. The concept of aesthetics allows us to see into ourselves, which in turn helps the development of the intelligences. Not only are these intelligences brought up greatly in music education, but they can be transferred to other areas as well, allowing students to grow more through their other subjects. My philosophy of music education is committed to offering a comprehensive program of Music Education to all students, at all levels who want to participate in musical study. The emphasis will be upon daily music education as it is developed in the classroom, through performance, and in the belief that students best learn to understand and appreciate music by active involvement in music. The job of a music educator is to foster an environment where everyone can succeed in music. Students have the ability to grow and to be a part of a team through their participation in group activities. We must encourage the growth of students within our music education program, not just as musicians but also as individuals.Instrumental Music For Special Learners This article ...
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music.
In Aristotle’s Politics he discusses several different parameters in which music can be experienced in. He observes music in an educational aspect, a moral aspect, and in a political aspect. In each subject Aristotle breaks his observations of music down into two categories: is it being taught and used solely for pleasure and/or leisure or is it being taught and used for solely educational and/or business purposes? Out of all of these topics that have been observed and analyzed by Aristotle I am going to use the observations that Aristotle has compiled, my personal music experiences/case as a music major, and how music pertains in today’s current society to refute the ideas that Aristotle presented in The Politics concerning music and education
As a musician you are exposed to many different types of terminology, ideas, debates and concepts most people are not. There are Interest and topics that we find appealing like the different language that we use to communicate with each other, are very different from someone that is heavily invested in other activities likes sports or even knitting . With these differences we have formed our own social group. The definition of an music educator is a field that touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain, the cognitive domain, and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity In our community we strive to achieve the goals set in this definition and also to move forward in our advancement of music in the world
Whether the student is a beginner, or someone who has studied music for a number of years, the way in which one views oneself as a musician can be an important factor in the kinds of experiences one has with music. A quality music education is one that challenges students to set clear and achievable goals, think musically and critically, and apply what one has learned in a meaningful way. If a musician harbors a negative view of his or her musical abilities, the lasting effects of this view on his or her musical experiences and achievement could be challenging to overcome.
Music plays a major role in life for most people. It can soothe and excite, encourage sleep and encourage dancing, we can sing to it and ponder it. There are so many different uses of music and so many mediums through which to play it such as Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, etc. Beyond that, more songs every day there are new songs being written. Statistics show that ninety-five percent of all Americans think that music is a core part of a balanced and well-rounded education. The same study showed that ninety-three percent of Americans thought music belonged in the public schooling system, and seventy-nine percent even suggested that music education should be mandatory for all students. Still, studies show that a staggering twenty percent of high school students choose
Exposer to music is crucial to young children’s brain development. Not only does it develop otherwise unused areas of the brain, like the auditory cortex, it increases children's future intellectual enjoyment level (Matter). Music at an early age enhances sensitivity to sound and pitch, which can lead to better phonological and reading skills (Moreira). Without a music program in schools students do not get the full exposure to music and music theory that is needed for brain development.
On The Huffington Posts, Peter Greene, who loves music. Has a very different approach on defending music education says, “There are so many reasons for music education. Soooooooo many. And ‘it helps with testing’ or ‘makes you do better in other classes’ belong near the bottom of that list.” (1) He does not like the fact that people who argue music should stay in schools only defense for the claim will make students better in class. They learn a valuable skill and now can use their own imagination, rather than someone else. I know from personal experience that all the general classes like history and math can drain me. Music and the arts leave me wanting more, full of self driven motives to get my work done. Expressing emotions and using my own thinking does rather than someone else’s thoughts. Learning what newton was thinking and his work in our science classes. For example, music has that aspect as well, “You know and like going through kind of a curriculum about people who have already gone through, or have already done the hard work of figuring out the instrument, and then putting it in an organized way for you.” (Jasper Nephew 2) Music also has a very important creative side to it. I love seeing everyone’s work and thoughts, as well as creating my own. Those classes are no worse than any other program, and they are well needed, but I also agree that music
Most music educators realize the need for integration of music into other areas of the school curriculum but do not understand the effort that goes into forming an integrated lesson plan. When incorporating music into another subject, students gain a richer experience in their education. Perhaps the most important reason for music integration is fulfillment of the eighth National Standard: "understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts."

“Every student in the nation should have an education in the arts.” This is the opening statement of “The Value and Quality of Arts Education: A Statement of Principles,” a document from the nation’s ten most important educational organizations. The basic message is that music and art programs in the schools help our kids and communities in real and substantial ways. There is an abundant amount of facts and information that supports this statement. The benefits of arts education can be narrowed down into 4 basic categories: success in developing intelligence, success in ...

Even when children learn music they able to listen, sing, dance, create movement. Listening to music draw out emotions, and playing music can be just like communicating emotions. Some people find this a very powerful experience. “ Music enriches the lives of students and should be considered a necessary part of education.”
Music education plays an enormous role in student’s overall well being, outweighing the costs of it. In 1994, Congress passed the Improving America’s Schools Act, concluding that “...the arts are forms of understanding and ways of knowing that are fundamentally important to education” (Ford, AdamMcMahon, Maureen). Congress recognized the importance of music education. Now the effort must be made to make a difference. If people really do want the best for the future, music education is key. Ramon Cortines, former chancellor of the New York City public schools stated, “We engage in the arts, we ought to teach the arts, because this is part of what it means to be human” (“Arts Education”). When people eventually realize this, the benefits will be vast.
Philosophies of teaching have been influenced by myriad beliefs about the purposes and aims of education. Plato and Socrates are one of the earliest philosophers to lay down the foundation of education’s purpose. Plato believed in the need of the individual and focused on what they are naturally attracted to learning to. Socrates believed in the need of the state and the individual together. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Dewey are somewhat modern philosophers whom have also expressed their views about the purposes and aims of education. It wasn’t until the 1920’s when prominent Hungarian composer and musician Zoltán Kodály fully established his influential endeavors to music education. By 1929, he was determined to “reform the teaching of
Music is one of the specials in school that can be implemented in the classroom. In kindergarten through fifth grade, music can be used in the classroom to teach students the daily classroom curriculum. There are several ways that a teacher can implement music into their classroom lessons. Some of those ways are creating songs, or finding creative songs on YouTube or other music websites. As a future educator it is my job to use a variety of teaching methods, and one of those methods should be applying music in my lessons.
