The choice of popularity, or being a normal kid, is a predicament a lot of young teens find themselves in nowadays due to high school football. Football seems to be the biggest and coolest sport in most high schools. Some schools go as far as having parades and pep rallies before games. While other sports just get a morning announcement. But what comes along with the popular high school sport, isn’t so great. Football should be banned from American high schools because it comes with a lot of pain both physically and mentally, it puts loads of pure pressure on incoming students, and it promotes pain over pleasure. On T.V we see all of the cool catches and touchdowns, but don’t forget about all the huge hits or injuries we hear about. On espn they have a category “Top Ten Hits of The Week”. If you’ve ever played or watched it up close, then you know that being an animal was good. Don Sabo states from “Pigskin, Patriarchy, and Pain” that “I learned to be an animal. Coaches took notice of animals” (Sabo, p. 61). People say that “pain is part of the game”, and I completely agree. But isn’t pain pretty much what the game surrounds? Pain is the game. It seems as though they don’t teach the kids to play football because it’s fun. They teach the kids to play football because it’s manly. Making someone hurt is the objective as an individual player. Of course the ultimate objective is to score and win. But if you can break someone 's bone along the way, or make someone cry, than you have done well. I can’t count how many times i’ve heard football players bragging about hits or injuries they gave someone. In “Pigskin, Patriarchy, and Pain” Don Sabo says “If I saw an arm in front of me, I trampled it. Whenever blood was spilled, I nodded approval” (Sabo, p. 61). Football is not a dangerous sport for high schoolers to be playing. It is played to show others what great team work is all about. Football will always have hard hitting and injuries involved. But it is a great way to get into a good college. Great warm-up exercises before a game are great way to be ready for the game.
The FIFA survey continues to prove that soccer, A.K.A. football, is the world’s #1 sport. There are about 240 million people in the world that play soccer from more than 200 countries. It is one of the most popular sports in the world that many people play now. It does take some time to learn the sport but, it shouldn’t be hard to learn it if you have the time and, put in a lot of effort.
Since football’s inception, it has been considered a manly sport. Young boys have been encouraged by their parents to participate in the game. For many boys, it is considered a rite of passage. However, football is a dangerous sport. A study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found, “an estimated 5.25 million football-related injuries among children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. The annual number of football-related injuries increased 27 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 274,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007” (Nation 201). These reported injuries include sprains and strains, broken bones, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, and concussions. A concussion usually happens when a player takes a hard hit to the head or is knocked unconscious on the playing field, and if not diagnosed and treated quickly, a concussion can result in death.
High school football may be dangerous but it is also a life altering experience. From what these boys can do out on the field to what they can become in life and all the things they can accomplish, putting it in peoples head that it is a dangerous sport is ridiculous. Yes, football can cause some serious injury but those chances aren’t very high and what are these boys going to get out of life if they never take that risk? Then end up asking themselves, “what if?” These boys should not let anything get in the way of what they want to do because even if they fail
It receives much more attention than academics. Football players are often treated like celebrities, yielding confidence, and at the same time creating pressure. High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to express their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1).
From bright lights, big hits, and postgame interviews, to television commercials, team comradery, and multimillion-dollar deals. What comes next? Depression. Memory loss. Suicide. It’s not a strict protocol that fits every mold, however, the future lifestyle of a former player in the National Football League consists of constant medical exams and the inability to “access your entire brain” (Weller 47). Football has consistently had issues with head injuries no matter what level it is being played at and the NFL is a league filled with violent collisions from some of the world’s most athletically gifted players. Players are progressively being diagnosed with significant brain trauma due to the size and athleticism of the players in a game that is constantly evolving in terms of the speed and velocity at which these humans are colliding. But “can we make it more of an Indy 500 and less of a demolition derby?” (King 6). “Players are too fast and too strong to think they can hit each other in the head over and over and think they’ll keep walking away unharmed” (4). This is important because it helps you understand the action being taken to reduce head to head contact in effort to reduce concussions in football at all ages. This shows that the more we study tackles and new techniques, the more we are able to take concussions out of football. In addition, Victoria Larned wrote, “It suggests that participants weigh potential health risks against the recreation benefits of proper tackling.” This shows that, in fact, many people are aware of the benefits gained by proper tackling technique. If kids are introduced to proper tackling techniques, the game of football becomes safer for both the tackler and the ball carrier. Teaching kids proper tackling will help reduce the amount of head and neck injuries in
Not only do we know the effects of playing football at a young age, we also have real life stories that have occured to real people. For example, In 2006 a 13 year old named Zachary Lystatdt’s head hit the ground in a routine tackle. He was in pain, so the coach took him out of the game for two plays. He returned to the game and on the last play he collapsed. Zachary was rushed to the hospital and was required to have emergency neurosurgery. After this life changing surgery, 9 months later he was finally able to communicate. Now, he is still learning how to walk (Hamblin, James. “Football Alters the Brains of Kids as Young as 8.”)This story sets an example of why children should not be able to play contact sports until adulthood. To pass the ball in a proper way is one of the main skills a player needs to play soccer. Passing the ball, keeps the game going. Without being able to pass the ball accurately to your teammates, more than likely your team won’t be able to score a goal. The key for passing is to keep things simple.
