Capital punishment such as the death penalty has been around society even before Jesus came into earth. Throughout the years, it has had an extremely negative effect on the government, society, and the morals that the United States of America was founded on. The death penalty came to a temporary stop when Adolf Hitler took the lives of millions of Jews across Europe, but then states began to use it again around the 1970's as a form of punishment. Overall, the death penalty has had a devastating effect on society because it has not improved murder rates, it is considered "revenge" in a society that is based upon Christian values, and victim's families will benefit more from having the government support them financially rather than spending millions of dollars to kill someone. On the opposing side of the death penalty, society as a whole has the right to serve justice appropriately to someone who has committed a monstrous crime. The Bible says that sometimes humans try to take justice into their own hands, but God is the only one that can truly serve justice once someone arrives at the gates of heaven. Many criminals would rather be put to death than serve a sentence in prison for the rest of their lives. Crime victims struggle with this everyday because they feel as if criminals had "the easy way out". It is sad to watch victims suffer because a criminal is not getting the justice they deserve. Many people find that the death penalty is inhumane and does not serve justice. This is the reason that many states have made the death penalty illegal.
