The audience for this essay is the instructor of my English 111 course, Professor Stephen Huffman, teachers, my classmates, and students. I am writing this for an Ivy Tech Community College online English course. This persuasive essay is about the illegal immigration in the United States and the need for reform. This subject is very controversial, highly emotional, and debated among many. As I thought about this topic, I found it difficult at first as how I was going to write this. I am writing in response to your request that I analyze Mae Ngai’s “Reforming Immigration for Good,” and offer my recommendation for or against publication. After reading Ngai’s document, in my opinion, I believe that UTA students will find the article interesting. Ngai’s Piece is very interesting because it addresses a reoccurring problem and can easily be made into a controversial debate. I recommend that UTA students should read the article because it has a different approach than what most people view on Immigration laws; however, I believe that UTA students will disagree with Ngai’s viewpoint of improving the immigration laws which will allow for more immigrants to apply for citizenship. The structure of the essay is well written, concise and to the point. Parker creates a compelling argument, and backs up her opinions with statistical evidence. However, the statistics are very one-sided. The opposing argument is not really considered, therefore, Parker’s argument is very biased. Parker also provides no solution to the problem, only states that she thinks illegal immigration is wrong. This ultimately creates a one sided argument, that while compelling, does little to fully bring the reader to her point of view. Had Parker presented the other side of the argument, and provided a possible solution, the overall effect would have been much greater.

At the beginning of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s essay, An Immigrant Writes, he mentions a statement from President Reagan about immigration.
