Many people also argued that cosplay can be an act of obsession. Many anime and comic book fans want to cosplay their favorite characters. However, some people develop a certain obsession, where cosplay becomes an integral part of it. Teenagers who get more satisfaction in the world of cosplay than in real life would get addicted to the fancy world of cosplay. It is easy for the cosplayers to mix up the real world with the cosplay world.
Many people also state that cosplay is “shedding one’s real personality. There is nothing wrong with wearing a costume, but if cosplayers wear it to gain confidence, when they take off the costumes, they will spring back to their original low self-esteem. Instead of allowing young people to explore their true selves, they hide behind masks and feel better by pretending to be someone else. In this way, cosplay, for many shy teenagers who have low self-esteem issues, becomes a form of escapism. Yodz de Veas Insigne writes an article called “Cosplay

At 2013’s New York Comic-Con, a TV crew harassed a series of mostly female cosplayers. A survey by Bitch Magazine last year revealed that 13 percent of respondents had received unwanted sexual comments at a convention while 8 percent had been groped, assaulted or raped at a convention. This is the latest hurdle women face as they increasingly become involved in comic books, science fiction, anime, and video games. Women now make up about 40% of Comic-Con’s attendees. But, what kind of protection is provided at major conventions? According to an article on metro.co.uk by Abigail Chandler, “there was a campaign last year for SDCC to revise their harassment policy to have clearer guidelines as to how sexual harassment will be treated. However, there has been no change to the SDCC code of conduct policy, merely stating that ‘Harassing or offensive behavior will not be tolerated.’”
Society has taught people that they should be themselves and express their individuality. There are many people out there who think everyone should act and be the same because people get judged if they act or dress differently. Everyone is their own person and no one should have to conform to everyone else in society. The debate over whether or not uniforms should be required has been going on for years. Many schools have decided it is best to have uniforms when, in all honesty, uniforms make no difference in academic success or behavior of students. Just because someone wears a uniform does not make them any smarter of behave in a better manner. School uniforms should not be required, not only because they do not let students express themselves, but also they cost families more money and do not affect what goes on at school.
In every magazine and on every page there is another source of depression, another reason to skip a meal or two or a reason to be self-conscious. In present society people are overly focused and determined on the perfect body that both the fashion and advertising industry portray and promote. Through diction, pictures and celebrities presented they are trying to convey a message to their viewers that is “suppose” to be used as a source of motivation and determination. The message they are truly conveying is self-conscious thoughts, depression, and the promotion of eating disorders. It is estimated that millions of people struggle with depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem; concentrated on dissatisfaction with their body image (Ballaro). The advertisement and fashion industry are conveying a message that creates an internal battle for their viewers, though they should be creating a fire in their viewers that provides motivation to be healthier, take better care of themselves and a source of inspiration for style.
56). Despite the origin of the word cosplay, cosplay is largely thought of as directly inspired by Japanese popular culture (Okabe, 2012). Many of the conventions that these cosplayers attend, also known as ‘Cons’ for short, began popping up in many cities in the United States in the 1990s (Pollak, 2006). Currently, conventions are held in around 30 states in the United States (Leng, 2013, p.90). As popularity for these conventions grow, more and more people have started to participate in the act of cosplay (Leng, 2013, p.90). With the emergence of cosplay trends such as gender-bending, cross-playing, and mashups it is interesting to look into how traditional expressions of gender roles and identity are undermined in the cosplay community. In this paper, I plan to investigate the relationship between gender roles, gender identity and gender expression through participation in
Are models really the perfect beauty queens society thinks they are? Whether it is “perfect” bodies or “perfect” faces; Are they really that perfect that teens and the fashion industry idolize them? Medical professionals say that 20% to 40% of models have eating disorders currently. From Anorexia to bulimia, models will do anything to get that size 0. Not only is this way of life giving a false perception on true beauty, but it is also influencing teens and children that they also must go to these extreme measures to get the “perfect body”. A whopping 5% of teens die of an eating disorder every year. These teens see a model with her bones protruding from her skinny waistline and think “why don’t I look like that?” The models sporting the very unfashionable bone accessory not only harm themselves, but everyone around them. So should there be a weight limit put upon these models? Should there be a standard BMI that every brand and part of the fashion industry should instill? Although many argue that the model and designer have the freedom to do and imagine any design or figure they want for their “artwork” to be displayed upon, is fashion really an excuse to let people die from? In reality, the only way to stop the drastic measures of models and teens alike is to strictly set a BMI upon the fashion industry.
One of the greatest controversies that is spreading throughout high schools in the United States is parents and their children against the enforcement of their school’s uniform policy. More schools have been adopting uniform policies within the past decade. Rules contained in the policy that are implemented range from wearing certain types of tops (shirts) in specified colors to students being required to tuck in their shirts. In the past, uniforms were exclusively for students who attended private schools because they were “well-off”, but now uniforms are being seen more frequently in public schools on students of all economic levels. Having gone through a school system that considered adopting a uniform policy, I would have to press against the issue of mandated uniforms, because it is simply un-American and unjust.
There are different opinions when it comes to the obsession that comes with being in a fandom. One opinion being that being a part of a fandom is dangerous when it becomes more than just an idle interest. It becomes dangerous because you don’t leave your room for self improvement when you spend a large chunk of time involved in something that only serves as escapism. Another opinion says that it’s more than just escapism. It is the displacement of emotions and feelings onto a character whom you relate to.
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
As I’m sure your parents, friends, or other say or advise you, is to always be careful of who(m) you meet on the internet. Coming from one with experience, there’s always someone who doesn’t seem to be a certain way in person as they would on the internet. With internet and cosplay, people always feel a sense of freedom, or a sense of being able someone they aren’t or feel as though they can’t be in person. Yet, this doesn’t portray itself in just the cosplay community, but in others as well.
Every fall high school seniors around the globe are in a state of panic. Of course you are no stranger to this process, you have dealt with this stress firsthand. What process is being described you may ask? The process of applying to college. Each year seniors scramble to submit applications, transcripts, and letters of recommendations to the schools of their choice. These documents are essential for nearly all students who want to advance to an institution of higher learning, but for many the paper trail does not end there. Seniors interested in a career in art, well specifically in visual art, need one more thing to obtain that sparkling acceptance letter. That missing link is a portfolio.
Those that participate feel connected not just because of their similar interest but because of the time and dedication it takes to participate in cosplay. Attention to detail, creativity and confidence are all important aspects of cosplay. Preparing a costume for a convention or other cosplay event can take a considerable amount of time so it is important for cosplayers to be organized and manage time well. This will help to make sure that there are no details missing from the character they are portraying. Cosplayers, take an extreme amount of pride in their costumes so they want to make sure that they are tailored correctly and that any makeup worn is as accurate as possible. A high level of creativity is involved in cosplay. Even though the core idea of cosplay is to portray a character accurately that does not mean that cosplayers do not have creative freedom with their costumes. As long as the character can still be recognized the sky is limit when it comes to the changes that can be made to a character. However a cosplayer would never want to modify a characters look so much that they become unrecognizable. One way in which cosplayers can change a characters design is to what is called a “gender swap, changing the gender of the character and modifying the costume accordingly”. (Lee, 2016) The most important part of cosplaying is confidence. “A cosplayer who wears there costume with
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Dress codes are important for a strong and healthy learning environment and is also reducing violence in many schools around the country.
Cosplay, the subculture that I have chosen to study, is when a person achieves identification by wearing costumes. This involves dressing up as characters from but not limited to works of fiction such as anime. Taken from the Japanese culture, the word “cosplaying” combines “costume” and “play.” Most people who are involved in cosplaying are interested in comics, anime, or video games. I got the chance to interview Becky, family friend, who identifies herself as a cosplayer. We sat down and talked about what it means to be someone who cosplayers. “cosplayers are simply fans. Some people openly say they are obsessed with things like anime and games. Some people, like myself, do it simply to be social.” But why would someone want to take up the identity of a fictional character to “be social” one would ask… Simply because being someone else for a period of time helps give them the confidence they simply do not have in their own body. Most of the characters people choose to cosplay send a bigger out a bigger message. The characters have a characteristic that the cosplayer wishes they had.
Have you ever considered why students should wear a school uniform? For a long time, scholars have debated worldwide, whether students should wear a school uniform or not. After a lot of research, I can evidently see that people still have diverse opinions about this subject as some people think school uniform is essential, some are just fine with its existence, and some think it is useless.
School Uniforms As the years go by numerous public schools are starting to drift into more of a private school concept. From the way that they run programs at public schools, to the way that have their students wear school uniforms. Many will argue that having students wear uniforms take away some of their rights and restrict students from freedom of expression; But when it comes down to it, is their freedom of expression really being taken away? Or are parents and students just over reacting because they aren’t getting what they want?
In addition to legal measures, many governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and other bodies are using a range of techniques to prevent sexual harassment and help its victims. Governments, for example, issue guidance on how to design anti-sexual harassment measures and to offer counselling to workers who have been targeted. Workers’ and employers’ organizations are producing model policies and collective agreement clauses, issuing guidance on complying with laws, conducting research and providing training. At the workplace, growing numbers of employers are introducing sexual harassment policies and complaints procedures. Moreover, there appears to be an emerging consensus around what workplace policies should contain and the steps to be taken to implement them, which can be used by those employers who have yet to take action.
