Many students believe that doing well on tests and getting good grades is the equivalent to being intelligent and educated. While those attributes coincide with being knowledgeable, they are not the determining factors of whether or not a person is smart. Being “smart” comes from knowing information – information about matters such as science, cars, or cooking. (14) Everyone is smart in his or her own way. The ways by which people obtain information are different, but the same is true for all that they were taught in some way. Teachers all have different styles of teaching, and these differences have been very apparent to me during my education. (BE 2) This happy personality warmed up the room, making it an excellent learning environment. Jokes were told, laughter filled the air, and I did not feel like I was in school because the energy was so different from all of my other classes. Something about a positive attitude makes a student feel as though he or she “can do this”. On the contrary, my worst teacher would come to class, talk with the students for a little while, and then get straight down to business. Because there was no room for fun while learning, I dreaded coming to this class everyday. (BE 3) Not only that, this teacher would shoot students down if an “unrealistic” dream was shared and say that it probably will not happen. (9) Granted, these are very important aspects of school, but they are not the goal of education. My worst teacher played into the idea that one thing makes for a good student – a good grade. (8) I was taught in such a way that I was prepared for the test, did well, and have since forgotten the information. My favorite teacher, however, knew that students are smart in their own ways. Not everyone is good at every subject, but the knowledge lacking in that area is made up for in another. This teacher wanted to strengthen each student’s knowledge of the subject taught at hand to somewhat even the playing field in the world of education. I was pushed and made to think in order to truly grasp the concept of the subject I was studying. It was a harder class, but it was a class in which I have succeeded the most.
