Have you ever got home after school and just wanted to relax? But then you remember that you have tons and tons of homework. You complete everything but you still have to print something out, but you don't have a working printer. You go into school the next day and you tell your teacher. The teacher looks at you with a menacing eye and calls it an excuse for not doing it. This is what happens to students all the time. As soon as a teacher sees a blank homework sheet, they automatically think you just chose not to do it. Therefore homework should be banned. Kids don't always have the time to complete the homework that was assigned. Not all kids have access to the internet. Therefore, according to Pew Research Center only 33 percent of middle, and elementary school students, 23 percent of high schoolers, and about 11 percent of college students don't have access to the internet. Also, not all parents have money to buy their kids a computer. Also, not all computers have access to websites like schoology, kidblog, and even google chrome. But when it comes to printing, not all kids have one or they don't have a working printer. These teachers if they don't see a printed copy of the assignment the teacher gives it an incomplete. This is not fair for the kid. The student worked hours upon hours on that assignment but couldn't print it out so the teacher gives it a failing grade. You tell the teacher but the teacher comes up with another hundred ways for you could have printed it out, such as going to the library, in school, etc. But not all kids have a ride to the library and not all kids have time to print it out during school. Some people would argue that the schools could provide supplies for their kids. This “order” continues for the rest of your life if you decide to follow the education system. Why was school created? Everything school teaches has shaped our world for decades. School has influenced students to be on time and let them believe that a letter grade determines whether they are smart or stupid. Also, it teaches students how to memorize and not actually learn material. What is the purpose of school? Is it to make us smarter? Cheating is unacceptable no matter what type of situation it is. After reading about the Atlanta Public School scandal, and finding out the consequences that were given to the teachers, I totally agree that the behavior for the teachers were not justifiable. If you break the law, then you’re going to be punished and there’s no other way around it. I do believe that the long jail sentence given to the convicted teachers were a bit insane, but the teachers know all consequences of every law they break before agreeing to teach. In my opinion, the punishments don’t fit the crime because we have criminals and drug dealers on the street free but teachers in jail because they changed answers on an elementary school test. The justice system doesn’t always make sense sometimes, but at the end of the day, we all know the consequences if we commit the crime.
In today’s world, many people desire to enter the education school system and gain nothing but continuous knowledge and--when ready to graduate--be prepared for what is to come. This way of thinking, sadly is unrealistic. Majority of the time spent in school, children are being taught how to test and not necessarily survive in the real world. Children are also spending their time taking tests, such as the ACT, SAT, ISAT, which are said to either “make or break” a student. This highly stressed issue is shown through an advertisement that highlights on this serve issue of what the school system is truly like.
Making a decision for the future can be hard, but it can be even harder when people are torn between their passions and meeting other’s expectations. In today’s generation, most students are expected to have their career chosen by the time they are out of High School. They are trained to plan and map out their entire lives. Yet, college students still end up having an undecided major by the time they start their freshman year in college. A huge issue that is present in today’s society is that college students chose their major for the wrong reasons. Parents pressure students to pursue careers in business, medicine, politics, and law; however, unless practiced with passion, those careers are pointless.
“Thomas Aquinas once wrote that it is better to know a little of what is important than a lot of what is unimportant” (Stancil, 252). Students should have a balance of street smarts and book smarts so they can be successful in whichever career they may choose. If the typical education focuses on teaching the students only certain areas they may or may not use, then how will the students be completely prepare for life? If education is supposed to prepare students for life, then can anyone really limit or define education? Kim Jones, a CEO who wrote an article on education, claims “Education does not have a single purpose; it serves multiple objectives, and the relative importance of each of these objectives can be very personal” (Forbes.com).
Some people have jobs, others play sports, and some kids like to spend their free time relaxing. When a student gets behind on his or her classwork, he or she has to spend time after a long day of school playing catch-up. For the most part, children in school already spend eight hours, five days a week, working hard in their classes. To add stress onto them after all of their work isn’t all that fair. Students should be able to focus on their other activities besides school even if they’ve been absent, rather than being penalized for not being in attendance at school.
Students usually spend at least six hours at school. This does not include how much time it takes to complete their homework of their extracurricular activities. Should students not get a break from all the work? Adolescents are supposed to spend their time with their friends and family but instead, they spend it doing work. It is erroneous that students are not able to have an enjoyable time because of the work given by teachers. Soon we will grow up and our teenage years will be gone. It is inequitable that an abundant amount of students spend their time being stressed about whether their homework is complete or not. This is our time to live how we want before we turn eighteen and have to face the real problems in life. The majority of the time, the worksheets that teachers give are problems that will not be on the test. Many teachers pile on homework but they do not consider our work from other classes. By the time the students get to sixth period, they will have homework that will take about four hours to complete. In total, students will spend ten hours doing work for school, not including those who are playing sports. Homework is a struggle especially when they have something planned for that afternoon. Homework is for suckers. Homework causes stress for students as well as for parents. Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Homework is nothing more than a scapegoat for teachers so that they can pawn off their due responsibilities on parents and students. Instead of having only extra cash from working after school, you can also gain many skills such as leadership skills. Students working while in high school helps prepare them for what the real world is actually like. I have an after school job, and it has taught me many things such as how to manage money and distribute my time better. Students should work part-time while in high school because it helps you to be more focused on your studies, and colleges will look for a better study and work ethic, and it gives you experience and helps you learn how to manage money. The United States of America has many states that have their students take homework home to work on, not a single school doesn’t send kids to school without homework. They are two sides on to why students should have homework and even more and the side that thinks that students should have none. I personally think that we shouldn’t have homework at all. One of the main reason to why I think that school should hold back on homework is because of sports. Why I think that it has an influence on the people that do sports is because it take time from them to rest up and get heeled properly.
One reason behind this argument is that all homework does not equal higher grades. In other words, just because you do the work that teachers assign, does not mean that the concept of the assignment is fully understood. Basically, students now a day’s give in nonsense work and still get credit for that homework assignment. In addition, when a test or quiz comes up they have no idea what they are doing, and end up getting a horrible grade. Plus, it lowers their grade point average, which hurts their grade because they did the homework.
Children go to school for seven hours a day, when teachers make them do homework it causes them to get stressed. Furthermore if children understand what they learned at school why do they need to repeat it at home? If children are struggling on a certain subject, teachers should be able to help them directly, not with homework because giving them homework on something they don't know anything about is counterproductive. Instead private tutoring could be something schools provide for failing students and not homework.
