My View on Success If using one word to measure success, what the word would be? Undoubtedly, money, power and happiness are surely the popular choices. Yet, are they truly the scales for weighing whether a person is successful or not? My answer is negative. Then, how exactly should we define success? To decide a man’s success, we should judge from two aspects－does he see himself as a successful man and does the society see him a triumphant man. If a man consider himself as successful and is content with his life, then there’s nothing wrong to reckon him as a successful man. Still, in most occasions, the way to examine a person’s success from society angle is to see how much money he makes, how popular he is, or how prestigious he is. However, those are only a small part of measuring success. Supposed that a man who is booming in the career, yet fails in his marriage and he is discouraged about it, can we say that he is a successful man? Maybe in career, but definitely not in marriage. When someone asks me how I define success I think of people. Enjoying what they do, not afraid of failing , and accomplishing their goals are qualities I look for in people. Not just making money defines someone as successful, but if someone can make good money and accomplish their goals then that would be perfect. Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and Jimmy Butler are people I think of when someone mentions success because they make good money and love what they do.
Throughout our lives we all experience a variety of things that help us define what success means to us. Some people look at success in a materialistic sense, while others take a more spiritual approach. Regardless of the way we view success or the factors that influence that view, we each have our own very unique Personal Philosophy on the subject. Personally, my philosophy is that the implementation of success strategies is key to achieving what one chooses to define as success. I have found that the three most effective success strategies I can use for years to come are being a critical thinker, improving concentration, and being an active listener. All three of these strategies are very practical and relevant to both my educational and professional pursuits, and therefore have proven to be the most effective in regards to my Personal Philosophy of Success.
Success can be an extremely broad subject. There is an abounding amount of different views on what the “true” definition of success is. Personally, I believe that success is finding happiness. Success is waking up in the morning and not having to worry about whether or not the bills are going to be paid this month. Success is having a job that you enjoy going to every day. Success is having friends and family who love and support you. Success does not mean that one has to be exceedingly rich or have a lakeside mansion. As long as they are happy, they have succeeded in life.
To give my personal philosophy of success I would first have to define “success”. Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. My success philosophy that I plan on implementing from now on is accepting personal responsibility for the good and bad choices I make. There will be time when I need to focus on school and worry less about my free time. If I have a test to take I have to study for that test to get a good grade and continuous good grades will help me pass the course. I can’t depend on anyone else to do my work for me I’m personally responsible for completing my assignments and turning them in on time. When the weekend comes around and all I do is procrastinate by telling myself I’ll study later. The smart thing to do about this situation would be to think wise and use my time-management strategies. I’ll always have time for myself, so sacrificing some free time now is well worth it. This helps me to be a creator and not the victim about things and keeping up with the self-management strategy. The success strategies that I will use will help my learning style, self-management and self-responsibility. Most people believe success is just having lots of money, cars, and women but I believe success is an individual sport and I have to be ready to play because the outcome of my performance is based on the work I put into it.
Success Everyone’s vision of success differs. Wealth, happiness, and fame are all the stereotypical aspirations of the common person’s so-called “American Dream.” My American dream encompasses more of the first two aspects than anything else. Happiness is the most important; without happiness, wealth and fame are useless. Without happiness, success cannot exist; it is your own personal gauge of accomplishment.
My philosophy of success, is me growing into the person I want to become and being comfortable with the choices I decide to make in life. Success is not something I can achieve overnight, it’s something I must plan for then proceed to working hard for it as well. Without hard work, there isn’t anything successful about the job I want to get done or the job I wish to get done. Doing anything without hard work and dedication, and expecting the best outcome is not success; it’s mediocrity. Being mediocre/ will only allow me or anyone else to have a ‘Victim’s Mindset.’
Happiness, what is it, and why do we strive to achieve it so persistently? Happiness in some points of view is portrayed as the state that is derived from self-awareness of a benefiting action or moment taking place. What of the moments that are not beneficial? Can a person still find moments of happiness and success in discord, a little glimmer of light shining from the deep recesses of our own consciousness? Plucking it from a mere moment, achieved from money, or is it so much more, happiness is the precipice that all strive to gain to better perceive their success. As a person lives, they are in a constant struggle to be happy. For instance, even the United States Constitution makes reference to the idea that every person has the inalienable right to pursue happiness. This was the resulting outcome of the enlightenment from France, spilling out into the rest of the world from 1650 through 1800. This revolutionized the idea that every single person has the inalienable right to happiness or in different views the right to succeed. As to how one peruses or conjures their happiness that is an entirely different concept and completely up to their preferred preference, but it is something that a person needs to find on their own for true success.
Successful is a simple word, however, the meaning of this word changes quite often. Each person has a different definition of success and that definition can change depending on the situation. Bob Dylan once wrote, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” This a very broad definition of success and should not be used. The definition of success should be “the pursued goals have been adequately accomplished.”
We all have those days when we try so hard on finishing our tasks that we have failed it afterwards. My friend Jessica and I would always compete each other everyday, since we are pretty good at it. We were pretty good at competitions since we are teenagers and know how to do what many adult athletes can do which was anomalous. Nothing was a problem because everything we did was so easy. We were good until there was one thing that made us fail and we were very disappointed in it.
Ever since the times of the BC era, wealth had defined success (Definition of Success). A wealthy person of those times would be looked at as a superior being, they would be someone you’d show respect for. They were successful. Although that's the definition of success back then, does it mean something different now? Like every human being, and every past structure of society, the word evolves with time because society's’ values change. The definition of the word “success” was often considered as the achievement of wealth, but now it has become modernized to fit into today's society. Today, success is thought as an individual doing what makes them happy in life, generally doing their best, or even contributing positive things to the world to make it a better place (What does success mean).

Success can be defined in many ways including: wealth, happiness, fame, etc. Success can be anything from material goods to concepts. It all depends on your concept and how you achieve your goals. You have to have persistence within yourself. Varying on your profession, you will need a certain skill level. Your definition of success can be suitable best for you, but not for others. It is about truly not giving up, reaching your full potential, and self-fulfillment.

Is there someone you know that is wealthy and prominent? Do they demonstrate the characteristics of a successful person in today’s society? Media today has effectively convinced our society into accepting an untrue, even possibly hazardous definition of success. Even though Webster’s dictionary defines success as “achieving wealth, respect, and fame,” the definition of success is different for everyone. Society wants us to accept that having money, having big house, and owning multiple cars is the key to happiness, and henceforth, success. This is a lie; success is not having a large amount of money nor does it have to deal with fame.
Many studies now show that it doesn’t take a college degree to become successful, but what people define success as is different for everybody. Success in my perspective is being educated in many different areas, being able to support yourself and your family to the best of your ability, and achieving as many of your goals as you can. Sometimes life gets in the way and may make it seem like it’s impossible, but, often times you will find yourself with the advantages that could potentially help you become who you want to be. Some advantages i’ve had that helped me become a college student was my parents not furthering their education themselves, attending Newton Public Schools, and having a generous and encouraging support system from my family.
