I am currently studying a level psychology, English literature and photography. A level psychology has particularly helped to improve my research skills on numerous topics concerning the human body, focusing on behaviour and finding out about case studies and research on unique individuals. I have also taken part in an extracurricular club called medic-link where university students and professionals have spoken in depth about various medical courses and I was particularly interested in Radiography. Gaining first-hand information from a radiography student about the course and information from a radiographer helped me further understand why I wish to study this subject. The desire to help others by knowing to be sensitive towards patients who may be elderly, immobile or very young and providing them with support at a professional level; when assessing them to produce high quality images to give them an efficient treatment. I was also able to relate with the radiography students who presented themselves to be practical and active individuals like myself. As they spoke about how they enjoyed working out and acknowledging the importance of keeping fit during their studies as I too like to keep fit to be well fuelled for better performance in my studies and personal wellbeing in general. I have been working in retail …show more content…
I shadowed radiographers in various sections of the hospital in the radiography department x-ray, CT, MRI, Intervention. From this I learned that there is a lot more to radiography and that there is so much you can do and progress with this career and that every day you are faced with new cases. In the A&E x-ray department I noticed that there was a updated digital X-ray model the radiographers used which developed the diagnostic images immediately on the computer screen, instead of having to process the images through another machine like the older machines. This saved significant amount of time and allowed for more immediate and thus effective treatment. I found this very interesting as I am enthusiastic and prepared to work with the latest technology and to learn new skills as techniques to develop good observational skills. From my shadowing experience, I learnt that attention to detail is crucial when taking diagnostic images where the positioning of the patient and cooperating with the patient to produce accurate images is a large part of the job. A level photography has helped with my attention to detail which is why I better understood the preparations taken by the radiographer when processing accurate diagnostic
After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree, I continued to work as a staff MRI technologist. Even though I loved what I did and had a passion helping people, the lack of diversity within radiology and its limited room for growth bothered me. I decided to look into furthering my career and found an interest in Health Information Technology. Upon researching many different schools through the country offering an online graduate Health Information Technology program, the University of Michigan in Dearborn stood out to me. Medicine and technology have both always been a part of my life, and I am very happy and excited that the chance for it to play a new part has finally arrived. I’m motivated to learn how I can combine the science of information with clinical knowledge so I can help to better patient care and
To begin with, how has technology changed the field of radiology? Since the discovery of X-radiation there has been a need and desire for studying the human body and the diseases without actually any intervention. Over the past fifty years there has been a revolution in the field of radiology affecting medicine profoundly. “The ability to produce computers powerful enough to reconstruct accurate body images, yet small enough to fit comfortably in the radiology department, has been the major key to this progress”(Gerson 66). The core of radiology’s vast development consists of four diagnostic techniques: computed tomography (CT), digital subtraction angiography (DSA), ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These methods of diagnostic imaging provide accurate information that was not seen before. Amid this information advancement, radiologists have broadened their role of diagnostician. Gerson writes, “With the advent of computer-enhanced imagery and new interventional techniques, these physicians are able to take an active part in performing therapeutic procedures”(66). A radiology breakthrough in 1972 was computed tomography discovered by Godfrey Hounsfield and Allan Cormack. Unlike standard radiography, computed tomography would spin the X-ray tube 360 degrees and inversely another 360 degrees while the patient ta...
My journey towards the field of optometry began in an unsuspecting place; a tiny pharmacy situated inside of a local medical facility. Throughout high school, I spent my time outside of class behind a counter, shadowing and working for a pharmacist who instructed me on the many facets of the profession. I always knew I wanted a career in the field of health, and the more I experienced the more I was certain that becoming a pharmacist was the perfect profession for me.
Choosing this field is something that has a profound connection with my personal life. Becoming a Diagnostic Medical sonographer would mean that I have accomplished life long dream. Ever since I was a little, I always wanted to be in the medical field. I have always had a big heart and wanted to help people so when I saw the important role that sonographers play in the medical field, it became clear to me that being a sonographer was exactly what I want to do with my life. In 2007 someone who was very important to me passed away due to gastric cancer. When my grandmother, who was a mother, father, and a friend to me, was diagnosed with gastric cancer my world collapsed. It was devastating news, not only for me but also for the whole family.
Curiosity has always driven me towards successful new experiences, from leaving home to become a first-generation college graduate to researching articles as a member of a radiology team. Now I am thrilled to be applying for a residency program where I can indulge my curiosity and immerse myself into the study of radiology.
Radiologic technology is a job title in the medical imaging field. People who take the title of a Radiologic Technologist include people who specialize in bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, quality management, sonography or diagnostic radiography(“Who Are Radiologic Technologists?”). When many people think about diagnostic x-ray, they think about button pushers. They often think that radiologic technologists have extremely easy jobs because all they do is sit behind a wall and push the button. There is so much more that goes into specifically taking diagnostic x-rays than many people think.
I was inspired and motivated when I saw radiographers worked on X-Rays, MRI, CT and Ultrasound scanners to produce body images which were used for disease diagnosis. Even though I was not performing a technical job, this experience installed me with a positive impression towards my decision to change a career to the Radiography.
During my undergraduate studies, I spent time exploring the field of exercise science. I endured laborious coursework that molded my character into a strong-willed, disciplined student. As I deepened my knowledge of the human body, my passion for working in health care evolved to new heights. I also grew a fondness for learning new material and concepts. By the end of my undergraduate experience, I knew how to maximize my personal success.
With all this in mind, I decide to research a little bit further into diagnostic radiographer to understand more about human anatomy and the possibilities of becoming a radiographer will give me the opportunity to help people which requires immediate attention, in other
Modern medicine is capable of treating a tremendous range of human disease and injuries, but the usefulness of all medical specialties depends on accurate diagnosis. Virtually every conceivable medical specialty relies on radiological technologies to provide formal diagnoses, making radiology one of the most important of all medical specialties. Radiologists enjoy some of the best working conditions in modern medicine and typically experience very positive employment conditions. Consequently, their services are generally in very high demand, with many starting out with six-figure annual incomes immediately after completion of their professional training.

Science has always been a strong interest of mine and I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field especially the technological advancements within the medical sector such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI and ultrasound. A degree in radiography contains a combination of science and technology which makes it the perfect course and career choice for me because I gained Diploma of Medical Science and I like to put the knowledge I have learnt into practice. I have a particular interest in physics, anatomy and physiology, as it gives me an understanding of radiation and the bodily processes involved in radiography. My passion in this field developed when I was working as care assistant in accident and emergency department
Choosing what medical specialty to pursue as a career is often a dilemma for medical students. This however wasn’t the case for me. During my clinical rotations at King Edwards Medical University, I was fortunate enough to observe many patients whose correct diagnosis could not be made without the radiologist’s input. These experiences combined with an urge to channel my inner sherlock led me to pursue a residency in diagnostic radiology. After graduation, I joined the esteemed Radiology department of Aga Khan University for residency, one of the best residency programs in the country.
I was under the assumption that Radiology was primarily X-ray. I couldn’t be more wrong! The RT 100 course, does an outstanding job helping students understand all that is involved within the department. Exploring modalities, equipment, expectations, and organizations, gave us, the students, plenty to contemplate. Material presented, gave me a firm foundation on what I will need to consider, assuming this will be the field of science I choose to pursue. I also feel that if I continue, there will be no surprises on what is expected of me because practically every detail is discussed within the
I started to explore the different fields of medicine by working as a Medical Scribe in the Emergency Department, ER tech in Trauma Centers, getting involved in research, volunteering at hospitals and taking high level science classes. This will enhance my knowledge and experience i...
