This paper explains the personal nursing philosophy I plan to convey in my nursing career. I believe a nurse is someone with a calling who dedicates their life to helping those in need. Nursing is more than treating an illness; it focuses on delivering quality patient care that is individualized to the needs of each patient. Nursing is to be able to incorporate the knowledge of medicine and compassionate caring while respecting the integrity of each patient. I believe nursing care should be holistic while honoring patient values. Another important aspect of nursing is the interprofessional relationships, and collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. I have always had a longing desire to help others. Been the oldest of four children and the oldest of fourteen grandchildren I always had the responsibility of caring for other people. Making the decision to be a nurse was the easiest decision I could have made. Nursing others is natural to me. My personal philosophy of nursing encompasses the knowledge of medicine and creating a relationship with patients to better provide compassionate care while maintaining the respect and dignity of each individual. According to Oxford Dictionaries, philosophy is a theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior. It is not the absence of illnesses. For someone diagnosed with a chronic health condition; it might just means that he/she is able to perform activities of daily living and even sometimes been able to have a career. Health is also a continuous balance between the body and soul. Mental and physical health goes hand in hand. One might have great physical health but suffers from a debilitating mental illness. A mental illness can be as serious as a physical illness. Once that continuous cycle has been interrupted then it becomes difficult for the person to maintain normal
