My first flight “Jesse wake up its time to go!” my aunt whispered. It was about 2:45 A.M and I was half awake. The day had finally come, the long awaited trip was yet to be made. It was going to be a trip that would make history in my family, it was one that we could not have afforded had it been our plan. But I had been blessed to be nominated as one of the four students to represent my country Rwanda in the 2008 international mathematics competition held in Chiang mai Thailand. What made my flight special was that it had been delayed for four days because the space availed would not accommodate the twenty three delegates of which I was included. Besides, I was on a mission to compete on behalf of Rwanda, my country, my family counted on me to return home with a prize. It would be my first flight. We reached Kigali international airport in fifteen minutes and it was still dark, around 3:30. My dad had borrowed the car from his employer to make sure we arrived on time. I was shocked to taste the difference in the snack offered on board from that served by Kenya airways. I ate a strawberry cake with soft layers too sweet for me to finish. I had been accustomed to eating rice, beans, meat, salads, French fries, but this meal was quite unfamiliar to me. But I had to adopt and at least try something new. After a few bites, I got to appreciate the work of a skilled Thai baker. Each layer gave me a different digestive experience, from strawberry to orange flavors, all combined in one piece of cake. By the time we neared our final destination, I had become well acquainted with the Thai cake, though the rest of the food took me time to adjust to since it had been cooked with sugar and spices- which was my first time to eat rice, meat, spaghetti prepared with sugar instead of
