In the “Speech in the Virginia Convention” Patrick Henry states that the Virginia colony must revolt against Great Britain. First of all, I believe Henry wants the Virginia Colonies to go to war is because he believes the war will come one way or another. Henry says “The war is inevitable-and let it come!”. This quote is saying the war is going to happen. There is no way to avoid it. Next, I believe Henry wanted to revolt was that he believed that it was either they fought and got liberty or they died trying. Patrick Henry’s “Speech in the Virginia Convention” and Benjamin Franklin’s “Speech in the Convention” are two of the most prominent speeches that have assisted in the forging of our new nation. The “Speech in the Virginia Convention” serves to encourage those that listened to take arms against the British and fight the injustice being done to them. The “Speech in the Convention” admits to the imperfections of the Constitution but supports its ultimate purpose. Both Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin believe leaders must do away with compromise and lead when it’s best for the people as a whole. That was a quote from Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention during the mid 1700’s. The purpose of his speech was not to compromise with the British but to take up arms. Patrick Henry was a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Mr. Henry enjoyed oratory which is a a religious society of priest for private worship. He also loved anything involving the law. At the Virginia convention in 1775 Patrick Henry spoke out anonymously about standing up to the British monarchy and gaining independence. His simple use of language and emotionally captivating passages inspired many to fight for a republic. Persuading the devout and loyal colonies to pull away from their mother country took courage.
He uses words like “chains” as symbols of America's ties with Great Britain in order to show the slave-like hold that Britain claims over America, which creates a sense of fear in the hearts of the members of the Congress. By saying “For my own part… a question of freedom or slavery” Patrick Henry frames the only outcome of their decision as either freedom, which would be the product by going to war against the British, or slavery and subjugation, which would be the result of reconciliation and obedience. He implores the Congress to not ignore the gravity of the situation at hand of how “war and subjugation” are Great Britain's true intentions.
He addressed the cruel taxes and policies that have been placed upon the American people. He also, speaks of the tiring efforts of the colonies to overcome the impossible British policies. Henry begins his statement with the numerous actions taken by people in response to the British approach to limit their freedom. Writing in the statement, Henry complains that many actions have been taken in an effort to achieve freedom but have failed. Henry himself writes, “In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation?”. In making this comment Henry urges the British to be prepared for them. After overcoming the stamp act , Henry urges the British to be ready for revolution if freedom is not given. This exactly, Henry points out, if basic privileges are not given to men and women, there will be a war. Henry himself writes. “give me liberty, or give me death!”. Although Henry refused to serve on the Constitutional Convention, Madison needed Henry's persuasive ways. Henry had a way to make people agree with his ideas. Even though Henry didn't serve on the Constitutional Convention, he was still present to put in his word. As soon as the meetings opened, Henry began to argue against the Constitution. This argument went on for three weeks. Henry was aware that the new government had to be strong, but felt that the Constitution made the central government too powerful. He thought that the power should lay in the hands of the states. "What right had they [the group that wrote the Constitution] to say 'We the people,' instead We, the States?" he demanded.
“Give me liberty or give me death!” This statement from Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention,” delivered to the House of Burgesses, has been quoted by many, becoming almost cliché. However, the declaration is truly understood by a select few. The unjust Stamp Act passed by the British crown in 1765, brought fame and notoriety to Henry as he spoke out against the unjust taxation without representation. Patrick Henry was born in Hanover County, Virginia on May 29, 1736. He delivered the famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech. Patrick protested against British Tyranny and was a symbol of the American struggle for liberty. He served in the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress. In Patrick Henry’s speech at the Virginia Convention called, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”, he used a lot of example of ethos, pathos, and logos, along with rhetoric terms. This made his speech stronger in his opinion on how he saw things the way they were and made him consider if he “Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense,” (Henry, Para. 1) but realized that it was important to share what he believed was right or “I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings” (Para. 1).
The "Emancipation Proclamation" speech was actually intended for most of the people that would free the slaves, not to the slaves. With all of my respect mister Patrick Henry I disagree with you, how could we know that they are willing to attack only because they settle on the shore? Maybe they have a problem so they need to stop nearby. However, you should not be sure that everyone will support you, everyone has his own point of view. In such a situation, there are a lot of people who are against the idea of "give me liberty or give me death". For me I think that no one in the world would ask for war, everyone wants to live in peace without being oppressed or enslaved. Moreover, you should send someone to investigate what they are planning to, instead of asking to send everyone to war. Moreover, you should know that there will be a lot of consequence of war, you will be responsible for thousands of people who will die in such a big war against a great navy that the British have.
In the “Speech at the Virginia Convention” Patrick Henry tries to persuade colonists to fight a war against the English; he uses several main rhetorical strategies such as; parallelism, metaphor, and rhetorical questions.
Patrick Henry’s effective diction emphasizes how much the British had suppressed the colonists and that it was time to fight for their freedom. Henry displays this through his strong use of pathos, logos, and ethos. His rhetorical questions really appeal to the logic and ethics of the colonists and leaves the no choice but to join him and rebel.
