One major aspect of nursing is patient centered care. The nurse of the future takes many things into consideration to focus daily work using patient centered care. Patient centered care is defined as “caring for the patient using a holistic care approach considering each client’s personal preferences, values, family situations, religious and cultural traditions, involving clients in their decision making”(Hood,2018,p.384)
Essential characteristics of Patient Centered Care According to Hood (2018) it stated that “family members must be involved in their loved ones care whiles been admitted in a nursing home. Therefore it is important to involve family members to become patient and family centered care (PFCC)” p.384.PFCC means where the nurses contemplate the family needs and the health care team including the patient working together in promoting care for the patient. Respecting the clients dignity is critical therapeutic communication (p.94). On the other hand, clients and their families must also show respect to the nurses and other health care team. Sometimes clients and their families who do not share the same cultural values and norms with nurses and the other health care team end up disrespecting the health care workers and this creates conflict. Patient-centered care (PCC) is a healthcare model focused on actively involving the patient in all aspects of planning, implementation and monitoring of care. It integrates respect for the patient’s needs, values and beliefs into the health care process. Important aspects of PCC are collaborative care, Family-centered care, and comfort. PCC allows the patient to have autonomy and a more collaborative role in making decisions regarding their treatment.
Nursing should focus on patient and family centered care, with nurses being the patient advocate for the care the patient receives. Patient and family centered care implies family participation. This type of care involves patients and their families in their health care treatments and decisions. I believe that it is important to incorporate this kind of care at Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) because it can ensure that we are meeting the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs through their hospitalization.
It is important to preserve the dignity of all patients in the care of nurses and to not make them feel as though they are worthless. For example, when someone is incontinent and cannot care for themselves anymore, such as some residents in long-term care, it is important to help them remain dignified. The resident should be able to feel as though they are respected and are given the appropriate amount of privacy as we are working in their home. With this being said, it is very crucial for nurses to provide residents’ in long-term care, as well as patients in the hospital, with great care while still preserving their dignity and maintaining their privacy. It is important for the client to feel as comfortable as they would if they were in their own home. With this, Registered nurses must appreciate and respect each person in whom they care for. This respect is seen through the nurse as they explain to the patient what they will be doing as they are caring for them, as well as providing care within the wishes of the person. Patients in the hands of the Registered Nurse, appreciate caring as a core value during their stay in the hospital. This is proved as Davis (2005) states, “From a patient perspective, the caring presence that emanates from nurses, positively impacts patients’ hospital experience,” (p.127) As nurses, caring is the absolute root of nursing practice. Preserving patients’ privacy and dignity involves aspects such as closing doors or screens and making sure they are covered while doing so, (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). The Code of Ethics outlines the importance of Registered Nurses supporting the person, family, group, population or community receiving care in maintaining their dignity and integrity, (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008). I believe that each patient deserves the highest quality of care, regardless of their life choices, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference and socioeconomic status. Each patient, including their family is entitled to respect and honesty, despite the circumstances. Aspects of providing the highest quality of care are safety, competence, honesty, caring and continuous learning and improvement. Today, many Americans face the struggle of the daily hustle and bustle, and at times can experience this pressure to rush even in their medical appointments. Conversely, the introduction of “patient-centered care” has been pushed immensely, to ensure that patients and families feel they get the medical attention they are seeking and paying for. Unlike years past, patient centered care places the focus on the patient, as opposed to the physician.1 The Institute of Medicine (IOM) separates patient centered care into eight dimensions, including respect, emotional support, coordination of care, involvement of the family, physical comfort, continuity and transition and access to care.2
Treating all patients with dignity, respect, and understanding to their cultural values and autonomy. Each patient comes with their own religious belief. With patient-centered care as health care providers, we have to have ways to work around a patient with different beliefs. Catering to their culture differences and needs is a must in order to fulfill their needs.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
In order for nurses to practice ethically they must understand the meaning behind each professional value. The first value is human dignity. With each patient we encounter we must show them respect as individuals. It does not matter what the medical condition is, race, ethnicity, culture, religion or gender of the individual. The dignity of a person must be protected. As nurses we must respect the uniqueness of each individual we care for, as this is a fundamental right of all humans. A person with dignity feels a sense of self-worth and as nurses we must do our best to help our patients maintain that feeling of worthiness.
Dignity and respect for patients is important in adult nursing because without it, it dehumanises them, and creates opportunities for abuse and ill treatment to occur. Lack of dignity and respect can also cause emotional problems for patients, as they are already in a vulnerable state.

Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
