How well is the company’s present strategy working? Panera Bread is growing through expansion of new locations as well as new acquisitions. The Panera Bread umbrella includes Panera Bread, Saint Louis Bread Co., and Paradise Bakery and Café. Paradise is the latest addition to the Panera family which purchased the majority stake in the company in 2007 and then purchased the remaining portion of Paradise in 2009. (Panera Bread, 2014) The timing of this purchase is interesting because the final purchase was made in the midst of a recession. Many businesses were seeing weakened profit margins or losses throughout this tough economic crisis. However, Panera Bread, as well as others in the fast-casual food industry, continued to experience double-digit growth. The purchase of Paradise Bakery & Café added an additional 70 locations in 10 states throughout the west and southwest to Panera Bread. Recent numbers in 2013 show a total of 1,736 bakery-cafes in 45 states and also in Ontario Canada. (Panera Bread, 2014) Sales growth relative to industry Panera is a strong performer in the fast-casual industry continuing to report double-digit increases in earnings at the end of 2Q in 2013. Although the earnings fell slightly short of the company’s projections, the results still placed Panera as a strong performer industry-wide. A customer loyalty rewards program that allows a customer to earn points toward a free item with each purchase. In regards to leverage, Panera is in a strong position. Current ratio for Panera Bread is 1.73 in 2012 and has been fairly consistent for the past five years as shown in Table F1. Although Panera does come in just under the industry average of 1.98, a current ratio of 1.73 is a strong positive indicator. Panera can cover short-term debt obligations with its normal operations. The quick ratio of 1.65 strongly indicates Panera can cover its short-term obligations without utilizing its inventory. The company’s quick ratio is again just below the industry average, with the competitors Chipotle, Starbucks, and Einstein posting at 2.87, 1.34, and 1.00 respectively. Einstein’s current and quick ration are relatively low and should raise a change in needed.
These ratios can be used to determine the most desirable company to grant a loan to between Wendy’s and Bob Evans. Wendy’s has a debt to assets ratio of 34.93% while Bob Evans is 43.68%. When it comes to debt to asset ratios, the company with the lower percentage has the lowest risk. Therefore, Wendy’s is more desirable than Bob Evans. In the area of debt to equity ratios, Wendy’s comes in at 84.31% while Bob Evans comes in at 118.71%. Like debt to assets, a low debt to equity ratio indicates less risk in a company. Again, Wendy’s is the less risky company. Finally, Wendy’s has a times interest earned ratio of 4.86 while Bob Evans owns a 3.78. Unlike the previous two ratios, times interest earned ratio is measured on a scale of 1 to 5. The closer the ratio is to 5, the less risky a company is. From the view of a banker, any ratio over 2.5 is an acceptable risk. Both companies are an acceptable risk, however, Wendy’s is once again more desirable. For the $34 millions acquisitions of 21 restaurants in Washington D.C. area on November 7, 2002; $24 millions has been allocated to the fair value of property and equipment plus $10 millions in goodwill. This has caused a jump in net property & equipment assets for 2002 to jumped 16% and Intangibles assets to jumped 12% when compared to 2001. Since most of the purchased are by cash, this has caused a 31% decreased in the Cash & Equivalents for Applebee’s balance sheet. Moreover, Panera Bread is better than McDonald’s because the food is healthier, the environment is cleaner, and the service is friendlier.
Overall, it seems as though Chick-fil-A there are several main reasons that Chick-fil-A seems to continue to thrive and be successful. One reason has to do with how much the company makes their brand known and supports their brand. Another reason is that the company solely focuses on the product of chicken related products. Recently, many competitors have added chicken entrees in order to compete in the market segment. Through marketing strategies and company initiatives, Chick-fil-A has tried to stay distant from competitors, offering a fresh alternative to the ordinary fast food restaurant.
