Actively listening to employees and pausing before speaking, shows the speaker their concerns are being heard, prevents miscommunication and allows key information to be delivered. Listening requires active participation and is not the time to develop a response to what is being communicated “You can’t rehearse and listen at the same time” (Schilling, 2012). Pausing allows time for the message being delivered to be absorbed and a thoughtful response to be delivered. Restating the speaker’s words demonstrates the listener is actively engaged in what is being communicated. Clarifying shows the speaker the listener is genuinely interested in what has been communicated and ensures understanding. Asking open ended questions that begin with “how” or “why” helps provide the additional details needed to understand the speaker and allows the individual to expand on any thoughts. In the YouTube video, 3 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills, (Tracy, 2012) points out that listening builds trust and allows a speaker to feel valued and builds self-esteem. Ben’s hands-off approach with his team has had some serious impacts and will require some work on his part. “The successful leader who engenders success needs to consistently lead a team with sensitivity” (Sohmen, 2013). Recognizing he needs to make changes to his communication style is the first step in improving his leadership skills and promoting teamwork. (Sohmen, 2013) explains that teams require clear objectives, mutual encouragement and trust. The result is familiarity across project teams and the ability to make decisions and develop trust. These project managers are also examining teamwork for ways to improve project success. However, since the benefits of leadership behaviors can be rather intangible, this has slowed or prevented the implementation of leadership theories. Accordingly, the impact of leadership behaviors on project performance has been one of the major issues for both industry and academic fields (Keller, 1992; Kendra and Taplin, 2004; Turner and Muller, 2005). In order to understand the benefits, there is a need for quantification of the benefits derived from leadership behaviors. Research on leadership behaviors and theirs associations with project success should offer tangible evidence of advantages from adopting a certain leadership style (Giritli and Civan, 2008). There is a need for more comprehensive empirical evidence that evaluates the benefits associated with the project manager's leadership style and, more specifically, its associations with project success. This study attempts to fill this void of empirical evidence by identifying the associations between leadership style and project success. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of the leadership style on project success and to examine the mediating role of Team stability in the relationship between leadership performance and project success. To inspire and influence others, a leader must have many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, “ the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” (2010) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
Effective leaders understand the importance of strong communication skills. It is imperative for employees to understand the vision of the department or the company, and how they are accountable to the goals, which must be communicated by leadership. It is equally important that leaders ensure the accuracy of the communication they are providing. Leaders must also take into account how their employees receive information and the quality of the message they are sending.

Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said.
