Good morning! As a mother, the first thing that came to my mind were children, when we were informed to choose a nonprofit organization as a topic for the persuasive speech. I don’t have any prior experience helping an organization, so I went on a detailed research. In doing so, I have learned that of all 6 charity checker websites that our good professor has listed on blackboard, 4 of them have only good reports about my chosen nonprofit organization, Save the Children. First, Guidestar rated it gold. Second, Great Nonprofits rated it four and a half stars. Third, Charity Navigator rated it 4 stars. Lastly, Charity Watch rated it A, which means excellent. The reason is they are impacting globally. I will not deny that coming from a third world country which is the Philippines, has an impact on my decision to pick an international nonprofit organization. Sure enough, my country has benefited from these type of organizations. Save the Children is impacting not just in a small scale, they are making a difference to the world. From that perspective, I will highlight the following programs that Save the Children does here in the United States alone. This organization have four main programs. First is health and nutrition, second is education, third is emergencies, and fourth is hunger and livelihoods. For health and nutrition, Save the Children is visiting schools, and other institutions giving lessons about balanced food and healthy food choices. In addition, education contributes 22% of their main programs. They have school-based literacy programs for disadvantaged students from kindergarten through 6th grade, specifically in reading, math, and science. They also provide tools and support schools in this advocacy. Another, in times of emergencies like natural disasters, Save the Children is visible. During the floods in the Gulf Coast region, they were there to give emergency assistance. The organization provide child-focused emergency plans, trainings, and emergency resources in preparation for coming disasters. Moreover, on the hunger and livelihoods aspect, the organization believes in not just giving fish, they also teach families how to fish. This in my opinion, is commendable. Not all organization have this advocacy. It promotes families to stand and support their families and not just depend on aids from private and public sectors.

Though the term has been applied to most nonprofit organizations, the fact is most nonprofits is structured using the economic model. The economic model is based on the traditional model of management designed to deal with the complexity of managing an organization (Bradshaw & Hayday, 2007, p. 4). This model acquires funding from multiple sources such as; individuals, government grants, corporations, and foundations. Though an nonprofit organizations may be identified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as tax-exempt, it may use the same economic model and framework as a for-profit organization. Throughout the world, but especially in the United States nonprofit organizations are very important and a necessity for many cities. It has become one of the main focuses for a growing amount of majors and studies for many people. With more than 8 million employees and more than 80 million volunteers in the United States alone nonprofit are some of the most important job in recent times (Drucker). The importance of many nonprofit organizations could be the difference between many people’s lives and their deaths. The importance of nonprofit organizations is growing throughout the United States day by day. The fact that nonprofits are built solely on helping the people throughout your community and neighboring communities make nonprofits important based on that fact in itself. Nonprofit provide places to sleep when maybe a family has nowhere to go or somewhere to have a hot meal. This could be someone in your family, a close friend or even a distant neighbor but in all people are people and help is help so the reasons for nonprofit being important are ongoing.
Finally, I believe that nonprofits are important to American culture and society because they meet crucial needs within local communities. Every community has its own challenges and needs. In low-income and impoverished areas of a city it is vital to always provide an avenue of support for shelter and food. Nonprofits, like local food banks, not only provide food for those in need, they provide educational resources. They inform the community of how to gain community or government assistance for needs like: medical, food stamps, domestic violence shelters, family planning, and veteran benefits.
Competition among groups who are serving societal needs may seem like a strange concept however it is a real challenge facing non-profit organizations. Each group is competing for the same pool of donations and additionally must also stand out from for-profit businesses who are also vying for consumers’ dollars. Over the last 20 years, there has been a significant increase in nonprofit and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) in the United States. With the increase in organizations, also came an increase in scandals and in the 1990’s multiple nonprofit and nongovernment organizations lost the public’s trust due to misuse of funds, lavish spending, and improper advances to protected populations. Summer has come to an end and school back in full swing. One is ready to crush the challenges facing a 5th grader. The last bell for recess sounds. Young boys race outside to enjoy the sun’s warmth. Name calling and horse-playing around immediately begins as they plan their weekend fun. Challenging each other to execute silly acts or daring one another to flirt with the girls across the playground. One yells out if you don’t jump from the top you are a sissy. Then one hears ask Julie out first. Recess is almost over when another one yells out he won’t…he’s a gay sissy. Silence has now blanketed the playground and one could hear a pin drop. Volunteers - these are the people who go out and provide the support, they are very important as they don’t work for money, so this helps the financial side of UNICEF. The volunteers also can have a key important influence into the final outcome of UNICEF as they are the ones that are physically providing the service.
Today there is a great need for social service organizations. The population of a lot of cities and countries has grown, creating the need for more shelters, soup kitchens, and so on. Most of these organizations are church based and community founded. Then there are others that are funded by federal and state government.
