Recommended: Rebuilding after hurricane katrina

I chose to evaluate New Orleans, Louisiana and the resiliency of the city. New Orleans has had some devastating natural disasters in recent years, so they’re familiar with trying to be resilient as possible and find alternative solutions to problems that occur. The city lies down south in the United States. The city is on the water, and has been victim to many uncontrollable hurricanes and floodings in the past. New Orleans is also very historical and festive with a french culture and unique cuisine. There are many climate change like threats posed to New Orleans. Sea levels are rising and wetlands are disappearing. The combination of the two could leave the city underwater within years . New Orleans has areas of land that are sinking, a process referred to as subsidence. The city tops the chart for highest subsidence in the United States, and it is one of the worst cases in …show more content…

The project is called “Paths To Progress.” Paths to progress is an improvement program for transportation, in efforts to restore and further improve the quality of of more than 60 road way segments in New Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. The project is a collaborative result between a few organizations. including: The Federal Highway administration, New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, Louisiana Department of Transportation, and the City of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina and Rita damaged many roadways that were already in the process of being repaired. The roadways are major routes that will benefit residents, business owners and tourists as well. The improvements will include pavement resurfacing, patching, repairing curbs and building ADA- compliant accessible ramps. The organization really wants to emphasize that this project will make transportation easier, and minimize inconvenience (Paving LA Roads 2014). The majority of the damage occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana. Waple writes in her article that winds “gusted over 100 mph in New Orleans, just west of the eye” (Waple 2005). Not only was the majority of the damage due to the direct catastrophes of the storm but also city’s levees could no longer hold thus breaking and releasing great masses of water. Approximately, 80% of the city was submerged at sea level. Despite the vast amount of damage and danger all throughout the city, officials claimed that there was work being done to restore the city of New Orleans as a whole but many parts, and even the people, of the city were overlooked while areas of the city with higher economic value, and more tourist traffic, were prioritized along with those individuals.
