Civil rights guarantees rights to U.S. citizens and residents by the constitution and legislation. Freedom of speech and freedom from certain types of discrimination are some civil rights protected by the constitution. The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments to the U.S. constitution. Specific rights for U.S. citizens are reserved, and rights that are guaranteed by the constitution cannot be removed or abridged by another state. In 1857 the Dred Scott v. Sandford case declared that slaves could not sue in court because they were not citizens. In 1865 the thirteenth amendment was enacted to stop slavery, to enforce this amendment congress was given power to enact laws that were necessary. The fourteenth amendment ratified in 1868 states that every person born or naturalized in the United States is a citizen, and ensure the state does not deprive a citizen of his/her rights. The first civil rights law guaranteed equal rights for all people who lived in the United States. The second law guaranteed each citizen equal right to sell, rent, purchase, or inherit real or personal property. The third original law provided citizens with the right to bring civil action for a violation of protected rights. The fourth made violations of these rights a criminal offense. The civil rights act of 1964 is the most comprehensive civil rights legislation in U.S. history. Title VII of the act prohibits employment discrimination based on the employee's color, sex, religion, race, or national origin. Despite the decision of the Plessy v. Ferguson case many people still pressed for the Jim Crow laws to be ended. The Little Rock Nine were nine African American Students who courageously enrolled in Central High school which was in Little Rock, Arkansas. The day before classes began the Arkansas governor Orval Faubus summoned the Arkansas National Guard to surround the school and block any black student or person out of school. September 20 National Guard withdrew because the lawyers Thurgood Marshall and Wiley Branton impeded the governor’s use of the National Guard. On September 23, police escort the students inside the school threw the side door. Over 1000 people were in the front of the school protesting they became very angry and violent when they heard the students were inside the school. On the 25th the little rock nine under protection were escorted threw the front entrance surrounded by aggressive mobs.
In May of 1954, the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case had declared the racial segregation of American public schools unconstitutional. The Supreme Court had called for the integration of schools, so that students of any race could attend any school without the concern of the “white-only” labels. The public school system of Little Rock, Arkansas agreed to comply with this new desegregated system, and by a year had a plan to integrate the students within all the public schools of Little Rock. By 1957, nine students had been selected by the Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), chosen according to their outstanding grades and excellent attendance, and had been enrolled in the now-integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. But, the Little Rock Nine, consisting of Jefferson Thomas, Thelma Mothershed, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Brown, Ernest Green, Melba Pattillo Beals, Gloria Ray Karlmark, and Terrence Roberts, faced the angered, white segregationist students and adults upon their enrollment at Central High School. Thus began the true test; that of bravery of the students and that of the ethics of the white community.
Thusly, civil rights were created to make sure that the American citizens would have political and social freedom along with equal opportunities. Yet, during this time slavery was still a problem at hand, and the creation of civil rights were in the hands of the states government. The civil rights protected the people against the government infringing upon them at any time, and it assured the people to believe that they would live in a state without repression or discrimination. Also, although Little Rock was seen as a success, as the President was behind the blacks, after the incident was over, Governor Faubus closed all schools in Little Rock until 1959 as he would prefer there to be no schools than desegregated schools. This shows that there was always a way for the whites to get around desegregation without much attention being paid to it.

Rather than thinking as a human with his heart, Faubus elected to act as a politician and put an infamous label on his name. Nonetheless, the paramount heart of the nine black students overcame all obstacles. These nine teenagers, Jean Brown Trickey, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Melba Patillo Beals, Terrence Roberts, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed Wair, Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, and Jefferson Thomas never thought that they would be chosen to be a part of history. However, when they walked through the halls of Little Rock High School they changed our nation forever. Their unwavering courage opened up a new door for blacks and gave many whites a new perspective. Most importantly, the "Little Rock Nine" took the most important step in creating racial harmony in America.
After the Civil War, the USA offered civil rights and laws privileges to African-Americans. The fourteenth amendment says that any person born or naturalized in the United States is a citizen and has all the same rights as anyone else. This means all African Americans will have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The fourteenth amendment also states that the federal government nor the state government can create any unjust laws that would prevent any people or a group of people from obtaining their basic rights as a citizen of the United States.
The Civil War was no exception, and was fought for two main reasons: to abolish slavery, and to preserve the Union. When the North won, three constitutional amendments, known as the Civil War amendments, were made to deter further oppression of blacks. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery. The fourteenth amendment clarified the status of blacks in America. This amendment gave U.S. citizenship to those born in the U.S. Since the Constitution applies to all U.S. citizens, it was now apparent that blacks could not be denied Constitutional rights that were given to other citizens. The fifteenth amendment gave the right to vote to all American citizens regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

To forever protect the freed people’s rights as citizens the Fourteenth Amendment was created. The Fourteenth Amendment was still flawed. Woman’s rights supporters Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony “complained that the amendment, for the first time, introduced the word male into the constitution in connection with voting and rights” (Berkin, Cherny, Gormly, Miller, 2013, 431). After much Congressional debate in February 1869 Congress approved the Fifteenth Amendment. It “prohibited both federal and state governments from restricting a person’s right to vote because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (Berkin, Cherny, Gormly, Miller, 2013, 435). Stanton and Anthony were against this amendment too because it “ignored restrictions based on sex” (Berkin, Cherny, Gormly, Miller, 2013, 435). The amendment still didn’t lessen the
Our civil rights are guaranteed to the citizens of the United States. When the constitution first came into affect there was still black slavery in the south. There were many Civil Rights Acts to make blacks citizens of the United States in 1866, 1870, 1871, and 1875 (factmonster). “The Civil Rights Act of 1866… granted full citizenship to all persons born on American soil, except Native Americans who were exempt from taxation” (usconstitution).This act along with the others stopped slavery, allowed blacks to own property, enforce contracts, and give evidence in courts, which made the common black person a citizen. Although these acts helped many places still didn’t except blacks as real human beings. This act helped to define who was a citizen by making a law against black slavery and stating that they are citizens.
Throughout the American South, of many Negro’s childhood, the system of segregation determined the patterns of life. Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept. On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the 1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. The unofficial leader of this band of students was Ernest Green.
The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution form what is known as the Bill of Rights. In essence it is a summary of the basic rights held by all U.S. citizens. However, Negro citizens during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950-70’s felt this document and its mandate that guaranteed the civil rights and civil liberties of all people; were interpreted differently for people of color. The freedoms outlined in the Constitution were not enforced the same by the government of the United States for the black race as it did for the white race.
The Civil Rights Movement was a difficult but necessary time of change in America. In 1963 Daisy Bates, President of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said “More than any other single event in many years, Little Rock demonstrated the gaping discrepancy between the Declaration of Independence, one of the most precious documents of American history, and the reality of twentieth century America… The impact on Americans and on the world was one of Little Rock’s historical contributions to the over- all crusade for rights and dignity.” Our county was built on equality but to this day we continue the crusade for it, racially, sexually, religiously, etc. It takes courage to change and the Little Rock Nine embodied that.
In the American heritage and government structure, it says that all men are created equal. This paper will tell of the Little Rock Nine and their struggle, and how it has changed America for the better. The Little Rock Nine started out as nine students just signing up for a school. They never knew it would have turned into something as big as it did. The nine brave students who signed up to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, were African American.
