Watching a movie where hundreds of swimmers on a beach are in a complete panic because of shark attacks makes a person scared to swim in an ocean, lake, or even a pond. Not only movies, but also documentaries of shark attacks stress how dangerous sharks are. In reality, are sharks really that dangerous or is it how they are portrayed? Stephen R. Palumbi who is a Professor of Biology at Stanford University and also the Director at the Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford wrote an article about other animals living in the ocean that are more dangerous to humans than sharks. In fact, he has written books about creatures in the water such as The Death and Life of Monterey Bay, and The Evolution Explosion. In addition, his son Anthony R. Palumbi is a novelist and a science writer that has written for Atlantic and other publications (Princeton University Press 1). Together they co- authored an article titled “Forget Shark Week: They aren’t the only fish in the sea” that was published the Los Angeles Times.
The Palumbis’ article emphasizes how there are many more dangerous creatures in the ocean besides sharks. Even though people are crazy about Shark Week, they should be interested in finding out the different species that live within the water. Everyone is obsessed about sharks for the fact they think they are the most dangerous fish in the water, but there are scarier animals that swim below. As a result of the national concern about sharks, people get excited when Discovery Channel videotapes the annual show Shark Week. As Palumbi tries to prove their point that sharks are not the most dangerous animal in the water with using logos and ethos but they should have more pathos.
The Palumbis begin their tribute to the sharks by describi...

...show. After reading their articles “Forget Shark Week: They aren’t the only fish in the sea”, I am not completely convinced it is safe to swim in the ocean and do not think they can guarantee me that I will not be attacked by a shark. I do believe when the Palumbis say that sharks are not the deadliest animals in the water, but I believe sharks probably pose the most danger to me, compared to the cone snail, giant squid, sperm whale, or sailfish.

Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.
The bull shark may be responsible for many shark attacks in the world but I believe that we have no right to kill them. Sharks are very important to animals food cycles and if the food cycles get messed up it can greatly effect the world. In fact, the bull shark is more vulnerable to human impact due to their ability to live in fresh and salt water but many sharks that are killed are for either shark fin soup or their liver oil. The sharks liver oil has many uses now but it started as a machine lubricant. Another way that sharks die is by recreational fishing. The sharks can get caught up in the fishermen's nets and eventually suffocate and die. As an environmental community, I feel like we need to inform people about shark habits and how to keep sharks safe. The water is their home and we are
This image is what a majority of people believe to be the shark. They believe it to be the bloodthirsty sea monster that appears in countless works of literature and films, but science says otherwise. The classic picture painted by the minds of sailors returning from years at sea come from imagination and sharks’ violent methods of hunting and mating. Sharks fear humans as much as humans fear sharks, and most sharks, particularly the “man-eating” great whites, only bite humans because they mistake surfers for seals. In earlier times, the ocean was a source of mystery and adventur...
20 year- old Madison Stewart, many know her as shark girl, is an underwater filmmaker and a dive master. The young Aussie grew up living on a yacht from just two years old, she has spent nearly every day of her life in the water. When she first started snorkeling, one thing grabbed her eye and that was seeing sharks in the wild, She instantly feel in love with the animal and decided to have a future being around sharks every day of her life. When she was young she didn’t once think that she would have to fight for sharks and their lives. When she returned to the Great Barrier Reef at the age on 14 years old, she had expectation’s such as seeing the same beautiful reefs and the same sharks, but what she saw and discovered changed her life forever.
Attention Gainer: For the attention gainer, I plan on showing the audience a two minute and thirty second video in order to display the tragic events that are happening around the world regarding shark killings. My attention gainer will enable the audience to become aware of the situation as well as invoke a serious and potentially sad mood in the classrooms, before I begin to touch on the terrible situation we have
In Chinese tradition, Shark fin soup is called as “a celebration soup”, which people eat it to celebrate in various occasions. Moreover, people also believed that shark fin consisted of diverse nutrition values which provide them virility, wealth, and power(Wolchover, 2011). These beliefs lead to the beginning of poaching for sharks, the top of food chain in the sea world. Surprisingly, although people are aware of the decreasing number of sharks since the old days, around hundred million of sharks are still hunted each year(Heltus, 2013), to be served on luxury tables surrounded by those believers in things that they do not even prove whether the belief is reliable. Therefore, in the generation that people are mostly educated, sharks should no longer have to be continuously killed for their fins.

Sharks are the apex predators of the ocean, meaning they regulate the marine food web. The ocean (there is only one, not 7) covers between 70 – 75% of the earth’s surface and houses 80 – 90% of all life on earth, yet sharks role in maintaining the ocean is often overlooked. The main reas...
Did you know that sharks have been here longer than us humans? Sharks have been swimming the oceans for hundreds to millions of years before the first humans are said to have appeared on land. Unfortunately the shark population has been decreasing due to the shark fishing market. People have often thought sharks as predators to the human race; but truthfully, we should fear living in a world with no sharks. Occasionally, over 100 million sharks are killed by humans. These sharks are killed for their fins most of the time, which are considered to be one of the most expensive seafood delicacies in China. However the ways of attaining these fins have caused controversies all over the world.
Fish Hoek Bay in South Africa is a common shark siting location. Sharks gather there for the high concentration of seals. In the past 7 years there have been four shark attacks with two of those being fatal. The authorities in Fish Hoek bay have set up shark spotters which communicate by radio and setup in key spots to spot Great Whites. When a shark is spotted they close the beach and warn of Great Whites in the water. On the day of the most recent attack the beach was closed and the flag warning of sharks was present. Michael Cohen 42, ignored those warning and decided to go swimming anyway. He lost his leg and nearly died of blood loss.
Every year, there are about 100 million Sharks killed, ultimately for its commercial success. Their fins are used as the main ingredient for a dish so-called Shark soup. However, many are unaware of the actual importance of Sharks' existence on Earth. They do a number of things to control and balance aquatic life down below, which in return affects how we live on the surface. Sharks have existed in our world for over 400 million years, if they were to suddenly disappear for industrial purposes, much problems will be encountered throughout the world. We must preserve the lives of Sharks, for many reasons most importantly that shark hunting is morally wrong, it may provide economic failure in a given time, and it may serve a critical unbalance of a healthy environmental state.
Thesis: Sharks should be conserved because they are an important part of the ocean, attacks are often incidental, and human behavior influences the behavior of sharks.
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
Sharks are known as one of the most fearsome creatures that end innocent peoples' lives with no mercy, however, there is a large amount of information that civilians do not know about them. This year alone, sharks killed a total of twelve humans worldwide. On the contrary, this is compared to a killer amount of "100 million sharks that were killed this year by the actions of humans" ("Shark Finning"). In addition to these startling numbers, the killing of sharks actually damage our ecosystem just because of this known persona that all sharks are wicked and not help in any way towards the environment. There are quite a lot of positive factors and interesting facts about sharks that make them appealing towards learning more about these majestic creatures. Overall, it is important to feature interesting facts about sharks because of how society displays a stereotypical flaunt of sharks, yet there are respectably well factors of sharks and their input in the dark sea.
