Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.

Using videos in the classroom provides multiple avenues for learning. Not only do students learn by seeing, but this also helped students develop auditory skills to be able to listen. Because visual learners learn by seeing, I can use maps to help students better understand concepts in social studies or history. Seeing where the pioneers traveled as well as talking about the climate and harsh conditions will allow the students to make sense of how the people had to survive. Another way I can utilize my talents are making posters with eye-catching cartoon characters. This will provide an opportunity for me to be creative and draw, but also make the subjects more appealing for when the posters are hung in the classroom. Graphs will prove to be helpful in math because I can do an experience, but also mark the results using a chart to provide a visual. This will also provide lessons in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. Graphic organizers will be used a lot to compare and contrast two stories. According to the VARK questionnaire, I possess a multimodal learning style. Being a multimodal learner is advantageous, as it allows the learner to adapt their style to each learning situation (Robertson, Smellie, Wilson, & Cox, 2011). The results further displayed that I am primarily a kinesthetic, but also a visual learner. These two distinct learning styles have much in common with cognitivist and constructivist learning theories.
According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. I’m a visual learner. To start off, I learn best by reading and seeing pictures, to do this i need to sit up in front of the classroom, during tests, I don´t get distracted easy. Next, I will use flashcards to learn new words and i will try to visualize things as I hear people read to me. The term learning styles is based on the assumption that individuals differ in regards to what mode of instruction is most effective for them. Educational practitioners have long stressed that optimal instruction requires diagnosing these individual styles and designing instruction accordingly. It is based on two fundamental flaws that I give the following rebuttal: 1) there appears to be no credible scientific evidence establishing learning styles exist (Riener & Willingham, 2010), and 2) assuming [1], it must be therefore true that people can learn in a variety of ways outside of one particular learning style. There are three main types of learning styles that educators need to remember when planning lessons in the classroom. The three main learning styles are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. All students in the classroom are different types of learners. It is critical that teachers incorporate all types of styles into their everyday lessons. One of the schools I worked in required the teachers to include what type of learning style their specific lessons were tailored to. We were required to put V (visual), A (auditory), or K (kinesthetic) next to the activities. I thought this was a great idea because it challenged the teachers to show how involve a visual into their lesson or activity. As the teachers started to incorporate visuals into their lessons they realized that it was beneficial all students and not just students with special needs. This was discussed in the article, Visual Tools Make a Difference, from the editor of Disability Solutions where it was discussed as a part of differentiating instruction in the classroom. This is where a teacher “use a variety of methods to demonstrate what they are learning about a topic” (pp 2). Uses methods of differentiating instruction in the classroom is a best teaching method that encourages progress for all types of learners.
The two tests that I have done have pretty much accurately described what kind of learner I am. VARK model states that my dominant learning style is Kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing things physically with hands on experience rather than listening to someone else. I tend to move around a lot when remembering or revising for an exam which helps me express a thought or understand a subject through bodily movement. My other style is Linguistic and Spatial Visual learning. “A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.

Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
