What are you passionate about? Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. It’s critical for one to have a vision for their life and what they anticipate to accomplish. Without a vision or desire there is no hope for one to continue and to purse anything. One of my mentors was able to show me life outside of poverty. They showed me doors of possibilities and started a fire in my heart that would set a blaze of zeal. Going from a life of no direction or goals to having a vision for my life and wanting to purse a better life for my future has done a lot for me. It’s important to help everyone in their current situation because you never know what the outcome will be for that individual. Not everyone has the ability and drive to get out of their current situation. Sometime people don’t want to change from their current situation. For me it was simple I wanted more for myself, I’m glad I made the choice to do something about it. It’s had a lasting effect on my life. My ambitiousness and networking opened the doors for me to work at Dell computers after graduating from high school. This was a match made in heaven because my love for technology and business would be brought together. I was able to thrive in this environment due to effectiveness communicating and ability to build rapport with customers and co-workers. I quickly exceled into a leadership role and started different incentives with in my organization. Working for a Global end to end IT Solution Company has allowed me the ability to work on different projects and different people all over the world. Because of my problem solving analytics I have overseen multimillion dollar contracts with the Federal Government agencies. Working with several DoD and Civilian agencies has allowed to experience real life business IT issues. It’s amazing that I have a helping hand in protecting our country and helping our country run more effectively. Creating solutions that work effectively takes lots of time and effort also lots of learning. Learning has inspired me to continue my education, it would make me more successful at my current job and show my daughters that education is important. I believe the University Of Texas at Austin is the right path to challenge myself further. Taking real life IT experience into the class room will also enable me to be a better classmate.
This goes to show that with guts and determination, those who are desperate enough to bring about a change, are the ones who are able to utilize what they have to get what they desire. Poverty, addiction and abuse are major obstacles that individuals from rough background face on their way to success. Moreover, it is their education and their ability to utilize their talents, as well as having the audacity to chase their ambitions incessantly, that helps them utilize and exploit the opportunities that open up for them.
People are often faced with many challenges that force them into poverty, which often is out of their control. A person that lives in poverty has the ability to take hold of their lives and go on to become productive is inspiring to me as a student of the social work cohort. Striving to become a social worker and reading this book allowed me the insight of the different people that I will encounter on a daily basis. As a social worker I will come intact with a variety of people that live in poverty, as well as some that do not. The people that I will encounter will be recovering addicts, people that are faced with unemployment that are struggling with paying bills or providing food for their families. Another thing that stays with me is the few that can live just above the poverty line, as well as the many that live in poverty daily. Advocating, counseling, or educating is one area of social work that I will have to provide for clients. In thinking about this, there are many services that can help individuals and family. These services only aid the persons and will not take them out of the condition known as poverty. Families fall in and out of poverty easily during their life time. With that being said, there are families that receive a much needed hands up, which allows them to fall out of poverty. But the fear of poverty looms constancy at their doors. One of the most important things that a person that lives in poverty can do is to strive for a better education. With a higher education there are more opportunities for advancement within the work force. The advancements that are rewarded with a higher degree of education will enable poverty stricken families to a better way of living. Which will provide a higher income, medical insurance for health problems, better education, and better housing opportunities. This is another area that my studies will enhance my ability when working as a social worker.
Throughout my life I have always had this deep seeded drive within my veins to empower and strengthen individuals. As a young child I was taught about the challenges, oppressions, and inequalities that countless individuals battle with through the teachings of my parents. Coming from an extremely supportive and caring family, my parents made sure that my siblings and I knew that not all individuals were as lucky as we. My parents instilled values and ethics within my siblings and I that influenced us to aid others less fortunate then us. Even as a young child, I did all that I could to help those who had less than I. At the young age of seven I can recall running around my house and cutting off all the box tops that were stamped onto our General Mills cereal boxes because I knew that those box tops meant that a child less fortunate than I would receive school items that they did not own.
Education is something I believe in. When it comes to school all I think of is being a future student of Old Dominion University. Ever since the 7th grade ,when I joined the avid program, I have had the dream to go to college. Teachers at Windsor Oaks Elementary school showed me how fun learning is. Plaza middle school instilled in me that knowledge is key to everything. Green Run High School is helping on my way to success. Education is not just the kind of things I do at school, but instead it is learning new things everyday. I am passionate about becoming smarter and gaining wisdom. During the [Project Wisdom] program, my principal tells us a quote then he goes on to explain it. For example, he would say, "Danny Thomas once said, 'Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others." This quote hit me like a thunderbolt. I was constantly thinking about it. Then I saw homeless people while I was walking home from school. I thought of nothing but the quote, so as I got closer to the homeless people, I pulled out my wallet and gave them a ten dollar bill. The feeling I got when the homeless people looked at me is indescribable. After this experience, almost every time someone is in need of something, I give or at least try to give them what they need because of the self-content it brings me. The "Words of Wisdom" program made a difference in my life by helping me discover that it feels good to serve others.
Patrick Combs' talks about how important it is for one to admit their interests and what they enjoy doing in life in order to acheive success and determine their passions. Throughout his book I noticed that he often reffers to the importance of following passions and dreams. Combs describes passions as "the greatest treasures you'll ever find." Combs' tells the reader that they must determine what they enjoy doing. Combs' teaches that one can find their intereest by using their "built in compass," and trusting their emotions. Once their interests are found the next step is pinpoint their true aspirations.
When analyzing a written text there are a couple of things to look at. Does the author validate what they are writing? This question can be asked in order to figure out the different qualities of the essay itself. How does the author relay the massage? This is another question that can be asked from this analysis. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. explains his message very clearly in his text, The World House. Dr. King provides a lot of information to back his ideas and main thesis. He uses examples when he describes what he wants you to know. He is able to relay his message to the proper audience, which happens to be everyone in the world, but specifically to the African American people when he wrote the piece. He is able to set the tone and keep it from the beginning to the end. Dr. King is able to use audience, tone and language to relay his message.
I’ve always had a passion for helping others and I love the idea of being considered a dependable person. I enjoy when others come to me to talk about the hardship they are experiencing and being able to provide them with feedback or helpful advice. To do this I learned that you need to have the characteristics of a “people person”. You must be patient, which from my job experience of working in retail and the fast food industry, I would consider myself to be a highly patient person. I also posses the the skill of being outgoing and friendly. I allow myself to be comfortable when speaking with different types of people and I let myself open up so I can personally relate to them. One example that I can give in regards to passion and love is personal, one about my own relationship with my husband of over 15 years. We first met when I was 21 and he was 23. Having both been in other relationships before we were not taking it too seriously. However the chemistry, and passion was obvious from the moment we laid eyes on one another. We honestly, thought this would be a fun casual fling. So, after a couple of times hanging out the feelings started to become stronger and stronger, we could no longer ignore the signs. The passion and love was something that neither of us has felt before, and after talking we decided what the hell, let’s give this a go. We’ve never been apart since. I have to say that even after all these years we still have that undeniable connection whenever we see each other. According to dictionary.com, “any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling” constitutes something as a passion. Passions can be either positive or negative. In my life, my passions influence my actions and my goals for the future. My goals have been a part of my life since I can remember and there are certain personality traits and motivators of mine that push me to accomplish these goals. My passions have originated from events I have gone through and realizations that I have come to. These huge motivators in my life include my desire for happiness, my determination to succeed, and my desire to help others.
Pursuing your passions offers many benefits. The list above is by no means exhaustive. The important point to take away though is that the link between passion, happiness and fulfillment is clear. We all strive to achieve happiness and fulfilment in life. Engaging in activities we feel passionate about will absolutely lead us towards that Promised Land.
People all over the world suffer from being in poverty. Young and old alike, they are always haunted by torturous questions such as, “When am I going to eat next?” and “How am I going to make it through today?” However, poverty is more than being poor; it’s an understanding that even though one might not acquire a lot, he has what he has, and he must learn to be content with that. Writing has always been one of the things that I’m passionate about. Whenever I have something on my mind, I would jot it down or type it in my notes. No matter how small or pathetic it seems, I would always write it down, because you never know when you’re going to go back to it and create something grand, out of inspiration. People would think that a person like me would write down poems or novel ideas. That’s completely true, but I also write down recipes, grocery lists, hate lists and literally anything that comes to my mind. I’m the type of person that does not like to miss anything, forget anything and likes to include everything. People would say I’m a perfectionist or a control freak and as much as I would hate to admit that, it is true. While these traits of mine might hinder my writing process, during this school year I learned how to embrace them.
The story of my life would simply be titled "determination". Throughout my life I have always been determined to get what I want. I was never a child that asked mom and dad for something and got it, I worked for it. From a young age my mother made me do chores around the house in order to go outside and play with my friends. As I got older, nothing go easier, chores turned into jobs, and my income turned into my alliance. However, one thing that I did realize is that working without passion is not very enjoyable.
