A major factor in anyone’s life is education. It mandatory to spend at least twelve years in school and you learn about everything you would need to know as a functioning adult, But what does education limited to? Music should not be a limitation for any education program. There are many factors and a large pool of compelling evidence why music is important to students whether it be benefits to the brain or the emotional confidence it gives to students, music is important. There have been many studies and observational experiments done when it comes to the many effects music has on the brain and it’s development. Music develops math and reading skills, both in which are main elements of the school environment. Authors from the Music Empowers Foundation state that, “musical training in rhythm emphasizes proportion, patterns, fractions and ratios expressed as mathematical relations” (The Importance). Music is done in counts, therefore as a musician you learn those counts and measures which can be taken from the music world into education. Music is based around the Italian language, therefore children in music programs get that extra foundation for language and reading under them which will only help their chances for success. Along with this is also the fact that students in music programs have better SAT scores-- sixty three points for verbal and forty four for math-- which also increases their graduation rates. Through music students are more engaged in school; they look forward to the day ahead of them and they learn the discipline to be good people and great students. Experts say that kids in music programs have to “set time aside to practice and rise to the challenge of learning with discipline to master playing their instrument” (Nuss). Like other things, this discipline can be taken from their music and put into school. Music develops the brain and keeps it in shape, as it has been said previously in this paper. The use of critical thinking is used in the everyday work force whether it be coming up with new ideas or having to strategically work around a situation. The adult world isn’t easy so qualities such as leadership, self-esteem and confidence are key for success. Music teaches all of those key components and that is why it is so important at an earlier age. Also music teaches how to work together such as being in a band or orchestra, as well as maybe a choir. All through life you have to be able to interact and work with others; it may be with new friends you meet or at meetings in a work environment. Also in life fear is a huge obstacle; can you find a job, what about finances, what about a family? Nuss states that musical performances “teaches kids how to take risks and deal with fear, which will help them become successful and reach their potential” (Nuss). With this skill and intelligence they can go on to make responsible risks and learn to set fear aside and go for what they want and what is best for them.
