Today, 195 years after the Monroe Doctrine, the “world police” debate continues. The Monroe Doctrine as you suggest is multifaceted; it suggests both the United States will not tolerate attempts at foreign settlement in the Americas but also limited United States interference in European affairs. This made sense for the time. In laymen’s terms, the Monroe Doctrine stated to England, “You stay in your corner, and we will stay in ours! Otherwise, we are going to have a problem!”
