At his inauguration on December 10, 1838, Lamar declared the purposes of his administration to be promoting the wealth, talent, and enterprises of the country and laying the foundations of higher institutions for moral and mental culture. San Antonio, Texas-- The Battle of the Alamo, a battle in San Antonio, against the Mexicans broke out, marks the most important of the battles so far during the Texas fight for independence. The battle began on February 23, 1836 and ended two days ago on March 6, 1836, lasting for 13 days. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, leader of the Mexican force, planned to seize the fort with an army of thousands. Unprepared, the Texans had an army of around 200 men, including well- known congressman David Crockett and James Bowie and not so well-known William Barret Travis.
When he was 19 he married María Gertrudis Flores de Abrego, who came from a leading San Antonio ranching family. Seguín became mayor of San Antonio in 1833. Seguín's father was an ally of Stephen Austin, and Seguín actively opposed increasing centralization of authority by the Mexican government. In 1835, Seguín led a band of other Texans of Mexican ancestry, known as Tejanos, against Mexican troops. Seguín was at the Alamo the following year but had slipped out to seek reinforcements, so he was not killed when the fort fell to. His was the only Tejano unit to fight with Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto, which was a decisive Texan victory. Later, Seguín was the only Tejano to serve in the Senate of the Texan Republic. In 1840 he was again elected San Antonio mayor and became embroiled in worsening tensions between Tejanos and English-speaking Texans. In 1842 Seguín helped defeat a Mexican incursion against San Antonio. In an effort to discredit Seguín, the Mexican commander claimed Seguín was a loyal Mexican subject. Opponents also used Seguín's business correspondence with Mexico in attempts to prove his disloyalty. Most remember him as a Texas army captain who opposed the centralist, anti-states-rights policies of Mexican Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna and was dispatched from San Antonio for reinforcements for the Alamo in the days before it fell. Finding none, Seguín organized a company of soldiers that was the only Tejano unit to fight at the Battle of San
Santa Anna’s hubris gained from early victories and political posturing would come back to haunt him. The month following the siege of the Alamo, Santa Anna would meet his fate. On 21 April 1836, Sam Houston’s vengeful soldiers attack and rout Santa Anna’s isolated detachment at San Jacinto in 20 minutes. The Texans slaughter 650 enemy troops and capture 700 more. Santa Anna escaped; however, he was captured the following day.
...ed unsuccessfully to his last year plan as Senator of a protectorate over Mexico. Once again, his name was mentioned to be nominated for the presidency in May 1860 by the National Union party, lost to John Bell. With the election of Abraham Lincoln as president of the United States, discontent in Texas made him call a special session of the legislature. He was opposed to secession, and warned Texans that civil war would be the destruction of the South. The Secession Convention began actions to withdraw Texas from the Union. Houston accepted the events but refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Confederate States of America, he was removed from office. He refused the assistance of federal troops from the President Lincoln to keep in office and Texas in the Union to spare Texas from violence and at the age of sixty-eight chose the exile from public life.
Come 1835, the idea of independence was extremely popular within the territory of Texas. Assemblies were held in the later months of 1835 and soon the revolution had spread like wildfire. From the interior of Mexico, Stephen Austin returned with news from Santa Anna (the Mexican President) and stated Anna wanted nothing better than Texas’ prosperity and would promote the idea everywhere. Texans felt these words to be hollow, and rallied to the idea of independence and annexation to the United States. Within months, the nation was on the edge of war. With the smallest little spark enough to explode into chaos.
Born on November 21st, 1956, Cherry Jones was born in Paris TN. She was born to a high school teacher mother and a flower shop owner father. As a teen Cherry attended Henry County High School where she began her acting career with the help of teacher, Linda Miller.
Sam Houston beloved the war would be a tragedy for the nation. Since he felt this way he decided not to take the oath to the Confederacy. Why did Texans fight in the civil war? They fought to protect slavery, protect states rights, and for sectionalism.
He advanced from justice of the peace to two terms in the Tennessee legislature. He was elected to Congress in 1827 and 1829 as a Democrat. Then he broke with Jackson over a number of issues and was defeated in 1831; in 1833 he returned to Congress, this time as a Whig. In 1835 he was again defeated. Disgusted, he is quoted as saying, “You can all go to Hell and I’m going to Texas.” True or not, he did leave Tennessee in November 1835, and subsequently appeared in east Texas, ostensibly looking for land upon which to settle. Controversy surrounds his reason for going to the Alamo. He was there when it was attacked, however, and he died when it
Texans also fought in the war to achieve State Rights. Texans needed state rights because they wanted to make their own decisions about stuff like slavery, and tariffs. They also wanted to have the right to leave the Union if they wanted to. O.M. Roberts, who was the president of the Texas Secession Conventions stated “ The true theory of our (national) government
Jackson where they won the battle. Houston was injured pretty heavily, but that did not dull his spirit. Sam Houston was not the type of guy to give up. “But being a young man of fierce and indomitable spirit, Houston rallied from his several injuries, although many thought that he would not.” (Harper xiii). After seeing three different doctors in three different states, Houston was ready to fight again. Soon after Houston was promoted to second lieutenant after he finished healing, and in 1918 Houston was promoted to first lieutenant. The next battle Houston fought in was between Mexico and Texas. The Mexican-American war was fought between 1946-1948. Mexico did not want to give control of Texas over to the Americans. Houston was named commander of this battle. The fight was hard, but power is in numbers. So Houston pulled off another strong win. Sam Houston never gave up on what he believed

Sam Houston then married a beautiful young lady named Margaret Lea for 23, but sadly died on the couch on July 26, 1863. Sam Houston and a bunch of his men, including William B. Travis, David Crockett, and James Bowie and others, made Texas a part of the United States of America in
During the period of 1839 to 1846 in Texas history, the infant Republic built and powered a small force of naval vessels against the new nation of Mexico. As with the majority of all wars, navies are never the main military power that settles the conflict but are the strongest of contributors (Wells 2.) This occurred in the Texas War of Independence, where the Texas Navy has little indication in text but was an important asset to the victory. Reasons for such an asset being overlooked are based upon the notable actions that took place ashore in the heroic defense of the Alamo and the victorious battle of San Jacinto lead by the Commander in Chief of the Texas Republic, Sam Houston (Davis 56.) Also, the lack of dramatic sea battles with the few vessels employed in the navy was another reason for their accomplishments to go unnoticed (Navy Department 2.) Above all the importance of seapower was but little understood during the time period and was not fully appreciated until the late 19th century after the publicized works of Mahan were noted by the powers of the world (Wells i.) As understood by the former Commodore of the Navy, Moore, "the Texas Navy was the difference between a Texas reconquered by Mexico in 1843 and a Texas Republic admitted into the Union in 1846 (Navy Department 1.)"
Newton knight was a farmer in mississippi who fought for freedom and secession of Jones county. Knight and the people of jones county put their lives so they could be free from the grip from the confederacy. The confederacy took many of non-slave farmers and put their lives on the front line to fight for what they didn’t even believe in. Knight opposed the state seceding from the United States, saying that white farmers like himself did not support slavery. He was a man of individual rights and equality, which was what the united states did not have at the time.
