The milk and apples in Animal Farm, by George Orwell, symbolizes the unfairness of the system that the pigs run on the farm. Squealer, a pig on the farm, is said to “turn black into white”(16) with his speeches. Squealer is sent by the other pigs to explain why they get the luxury of the milk and apples and he states that “Many of us (the pigs) dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health,” (35). He lies to the other animals to make them think the pigs dislike the milk and apples but they drink and eat it anyway since they are the “brainworkers” and are essential to running the farm.
