Being a member of the Firelands High School “Mighty Falcon Marching Band” has taught me more about myself, shown me respect for others, given me a sense of commitment, and brought me more positive experiences in my high school career than anything else I have participated in. The long, challenging rehearsals wonderful performances, and exciting trips have defined my experiences during the past four marching seasons. This ragtag group became my second family. I obtained these lessons about being a part of a group and putting the needs of others above myself; this has been the most crucial lesson. I’ve had the honor to partake in the extremely rewarding feelings, such as enthusiasm and excitement, that come with being a part of a band. When our director collected our finals on, the last week of school of my junior year, it dawned on my class that we were the new seniors. As the new leaders, we had to learn how to handle new situations with difficult underclassmen and how to encourage the band in the best of the difficult times to have them improve their skills to progress the band further and set the bar higher on excellence. As you watch the concert, our ‘refined machine’ performs a show and tells a story as it tests a person’s strength, both mentally and physically. A few weeks before the concert, our director pulled the band seniors into his office to tell us the dreadful news. The dreadful news was that the Board of Education (BOE) chose the day of the concert to demolish the field to put in new turf for the upcoming football season. Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. Band teaches life skills. Where independent thinking is the model in most academic classrooms, teamwork is essential in band. Band students learn to work with and for each other. The three R’s in band include Respect, Responsibility, & Reliability. Our students learn to appreciate one another for their individual talents and their contributions to the organization as a whole. They learn positive social skills –the most important factor in our program –where we teach such qualities as confidence, pride, and self esteem; all values that will serve these young people well throughout the course of their life. Citizenship, team motivational skills/leadership skills, time management, organization skills, dependability, and honesty are instilled into band members. Band teaches students to face challenges and strive to reach higher and higher goals.
The low reed section to me is not just my section, it is my family, and I would love to have the honor of calling myself mom. However, Lauren will always be the original mom and my biggest role model in band. She was the first one to give me hug whenever I was upset, she made sure I didn't get sunburned during band camp, and was overall the most loving, caring section leader I most likely will ever have. As section leader, I would like to devote all my time, love, and leadership to my section and show what an amazing marching experience truly is. Throughout this essay, I will evaluate what Lauren did well, what she could have done better, what I would do differently, and why I am the person for the job.
With an upcoming drumline of around ten freshmen, eight sophomores, three juniors, and one senior we have a tremendous amount of work ahead of us and to achieve that goal of being the best we need someone to lead us. Our ensemble can become amazing and I have a lot of great goals I hope we accomplish next year but more than anything else our group needs motivation to become the best. And by the end of next year we will have pushed ourselves and we might be bloody and tired at the finish line but we will have made it. That 's what I strive for if I get the position of Drum Captain for the 2016 Pirate Drum Line.
To conclude, I am preparing for my band final right now. This is, for me, the scariest time of year, because I always get extremely nervous. I am trying to play in front of as many people as possible in order to reduce my nerves. I am also constantly recording myself to make sure that my notes are in tune, and my scales are played correctly. Hopefully, all my preparation pays off, because during our last final, I had played less than stellar, and I hope that I can improve and learn from that experience. In conclusion, my first year of band has taught me that in order to succeed, you need to to work hard and practice. Band has been a fun and learning experience, and I have learned that I have to be responsible and that I need to continue to work hard.

Sweat dripping down my face and butterflies fluttering around my stomach as if it was the Garden of Eden, I took in a deep breathe and asked myself: "Why am I so nervous? After all, it is just the most exciting day of my life." When the judges announced for the Parsippany Hills High School Marching Band to commence its show, my mind blanked out and I was on the verge of losing sanity. Giant's Stadium engulfed me, and as I pointed my instrument up to the judges' stand, I gathered my thoughts and placed my mouth into the ice-cold mouthpiece of the contrabass. "Ready or not," I beamed, "here comes the best show you will ever behold." There is no word to describe the feeling I obtain through music. However, there is no word to describe the pain I suffer through in order to be the best in the band either. When I switched my instrument to tuba from flute in seventh grade, little did I know the difference it would make in the four years of high school I was soon to experience. I joined marching band in ninth grade as my ongoing love for music waxed. When my instructor placed the 30 lb. sousaphone on my shoulder on the first day, I lost my balance and would have fallen had my friends not made the effort to catch me. During practices, I always attempted to ease the discomfort as the sousaphone cut through my collar bone, but eventually my shoulder started to agonize and bleed under the pressure. My endurance and my effort to play the best show without complaining about the weight paid off when I received the award for "Rookie of the Year." For the next three seasons of band practice, the ache and toil continued. Whenever the band had practice, followed by a football game and then a competition, my brain would blur from fatigue and my body would scream in agony. Nevertheless, I pointed my toes high in the air as I marched on, passionate about the activity. As a result, my band instructor saw my drive toward music and I was named Quartermaster for my junior year, being trusted with organizing, distributing, and collecting uniforms for all seventy-five members of the band. The responsibility was tremendous. It took a bulk of my time, but the sentiment of knowing that I was an important part of band made it all worthwhile.

One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. I have been a member of marching band ever since I was in eighth grade. Marching, and music itself, was almost part of my DNA, with my entire family having been involved in musical organizations before me. My journey into the world of marching band began as a timid, reserved, and anxiety-filled girl who did not know anybody else involved in the organization. I was convinced that I was going to hate it, and came home from most of our summer rehearsals in tears. That was when older members started reaching out to me; they invited me to lunches and dinners during band camp, and sat with me during breaks so that I did not have to be alone. It is impossible to fully comprehend the appeal to the Gulf Coast High School Band Room unless you are actually a member of the band. All members of the Gulf Coast High School marching band spend the majority of their time in the band room, which is like a second home for most. The room itself does not appear to be anything special. It is a large room with a high ceiling, bright fluorescent lighting, and pink and green padding on the walls. The hallway maintains a terrible odor which nobody can quite determine the source of, and the white, vinyl tile floor is covered in a layer of disgusting things one can only dream of. Still, for some reason it remains a haven to about twelve percent of the student body. At first glance, it does not look like anything special, but when you open that big, gray door and step into the “band world” it becomes clear that it really is an amazing and wonderful place. It feels like the center of the universe.
October 26, 2014 is a day I will never forget, this was the day that I stood on the Carrier Dome field in Syracuse, New York anxiously awaiting the results of the New York State Field Band Championships. I had stood in that place for the last three years, every time coming in a close second to our rivals. However, the feeling in the air was different, we had done exceptionally well that season. We waited eagerly with racing hearts and sweaty palms; my mind played out each performance we had done that season. Every step, every note, and every breath culminated in my mind. After the third-place position was announced, our band knew it was between us and our rivals. My heart was pounding so hard it was as if I could see it through my uniform. I looked to some of my fellow band members and could see it on them as well; the excitement, the nervousness, and the readiness for what was about to come. It was as if time stood still when the announcer had said, “Second place, with a score of…” my ears tuned out the rest of his words. It wasn’t until I looked at the screen, that the reality our band had made first place sunk in. For the screen had read that our rivals had come in second, leaving the first place position to our band.
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups.
