He was born on December 1, 1949 in Antioquia, Colombia. Escobar started his drug trade in the 1970s. Escobar and other criminals got together to form the Medellin Cartel. 80% of the cocaine shipped to the United States came from the Medellin Cartel. Before he became a drug dealer, he had dreams of becoming the president of Colombia. But his path to wanting to be wealthy led to being a criminal. He started off as a street thief. He stole cars and eventually started smuggling cigarettes. Once he became a drug dealer, 15 tons of cocaine were supposedly smuggled everyday. The cartel earned $420 million a week because of this. He was chosen as a member of the Colombian congress in 1982. Since he couldn't hide why he was so wealthy, he was forced to resign two years after his election. Escobar eventually surrendered in 1991 to the Colombian government. He was allowed to create his own prison instead of being killed. His prison had a casino, spa, and nightclub. Escobar escaped in 1992. The Medellin Cartel eventually began to disintegrate because of Escobar’s imprisonment. Pablo Escobar was killed on December 2, …show more content…
This is another effect of drug trafficking. The drug war began on December 11, 2006 and is between drug cartels that are fighting over who has more power. The war was launched by former president Felipe Calderon and has been continued by current president Enrique Pena Nieto. During the years 2006 and 2012, 60,000 people are believed to have died because of the war. This drug war has caused nationwide violence. Citizens in Mexico are teaming up to protect the streets of where they live from the drug cartels. These groups of people are called “autodefensas”. But not all of these groups are trying to protect the citizens. Two major autodefensa groups are fighting over land, causing more violence, and some of these groups sometimes resort to cartel-like strategies such as blackmailing, kidnapping, and even drug

A drug cartel is a combination of drug manufacturing and drug transportation organizations under one person’s leadership. While there is numerous drug cartels around the world the Mexican cartels have arguably more power than most in regards to territory and membership. This power has allowed them to have main control in not only Mexico but in the United States as well making them a key player in the drug trade. In 2006, the Mexican government challenged multiple drug cartels such as the Sinaloa cartel, The Los Zetas, and the Gulf cartel, beginning the Mexican Drug War. This war has gone on for the past ten years and is still continuing today, causing the death of 10,000 people a year on average. The Mexican Drug War is having a negative impact
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera was born on April 4, 1957 in Sinaloa, Mexico. He was born into a poor family in a rural community. His parents are Emilio Guzman Bustillos and Maria Consuelo Loera Perez. For numerous generations, his family’s legacy lived and died in La Tuna, Sinaloa. Although a number of myths about his father being an opium farmer have not been proven, he was actually a cattle rancher. Guzman has two younger sisters and four younger brothers. As a child, Guzman had a responsibility of selling oranges. In fact, he dropped out of school in the third grade to work for his father. Although his father physically abused him and treated him brutal, he stood up to his father when it came to his younger siblings for their own protection.
He was a businessman during the 80’s that was born in Medellin, Colombia. By the time he was 30 he would become the richest person in the world for 7 consecutive years, according to Forbes magazine. He would attain his success through the business of smuggling drugs and other merchandises, but mostly drugs which were on high demand at that time in Colombia and in the United States. As agent Murphy narrated in the show Narcos: “Its supply created its own demand”( Narcos). Meaning that Pablo did not settle he was very ambitious, and the money he received from making these deals was put into getting more product and therefore more profit.

The cartels are now in control of most of the drug trades and are successful. The Mexican border gives them the power to go everywhere they desire, making them a relentless force. “To date operation Xcellrator has led the arrest of 755 individuals and the seizure of approximately 5 U.S. Currency more than 12,000 kilograms of cocaine, more than 16,000 pounds of marijuana, more than 11,000 of methamphetamine, more than 8 kilograms of heroin, approximately 1.3 million pills of ecstasy”(Doj 2). Mexican cartels extend to central and southern America. Columbia is the supply of much of the cocaine exported to the U.S. Colombia is under control of South American gangs, they do business with the Mexican cartels to transport drugs the north. The Northern Mexican gangs hold the most control because the territory is very important (Wagner1). The war over drug routes and power between rival cartels has left Mexico in a bloody war. The violence occurring throughout the country only seems to escalate. In part, the United States has a role in this war because of the exploitation of weapons. Unfortunately, a lot of people are being killed every day because of the drug war. Action from Mexico must be taken swiftly to avoid any further casualties by collaborating with the United States on how to stop the smuggling of guns, building trust between the community and the police, and deciding on a plan to the help the economy for their citizens.
Over the last several decades, violence has consumed and transformed Mexico. Since the rise of dozens of Mexican cartels, the Mexican government has constantly been fighting an ongoing war with these criminal organizations. The cartel organizations have a primary purpose of managing and controlling illegal drug trafficking operations in Central America and South America to the United States. Violence on a massive and brutal scale has emerged due to the nature of the illegal drug trade. Because the drug trade is vastly widespread, cartels are often fighting one another and competing in business. Mexican authorities count at least 12 major cartels, but also talk of an untold numbers of smaller splinter groups. (Taipei Times). Five cartels from Mexico have risen to become the extremely powerful amongst all the drug organizations operating in Mexico. The Guadalajara Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Tijuana Cartel, the Juarez Cartel, and the Gulf Cartel. These organizations, along with other distinguished Mexican cartels, have plagued Mexico with violence, terror, and fear due to the essence and nature of illegal drug trafficking.

Drug trafficking has been a massive concern between the borders of Mexico and the U.S. “since mid 1970s” (Wyler, 1). Drug trafficking is “knowingly being in possession, manufacturing, selling, purchasing, or delivering an illegal, controlled substance” (LaMance, 1). A dynamic relationship exists amongst Columbia, Mexico, and the U.S. the informal drug trafficking economy. This growing informal drug economy leads to many individuals creating a substantial living through this undercover market. These individual drug cartels monopolizing the trafficking market are a growing problem for the U.S economy and need to be located and controlled. If this trafficking continues, the U.S. informal economy will crush the growth of legal industries. The trafficking and abuse of drugs in the U.S. affects nearly all aspects of consumer life. Drug trafficking remains a growing issue and concern to the U.S. government. The U.S. border control must find a way to work with Mexico to overpower the individuals who contribute to the drug trafficking business. This market must be seized and these individuals must be stopped.
Pablo Escobar dedicated most of his life to being the spearhead of the Medellin drug cartel in Colombia. The Medellin Cartel was not just a business, it was an empire. It possessed countless camps as well as laboratories devoted to the production of drugs. As it was mentioned earlier, the profits of the cartel were very high. The immense amount of money was put toward the purchase of new labs, planes, and even an island. The Medellin Cartel focused predominantly on cocaine. Not only did Pablo Escobar run a “criminal enterprise” committed to illegally trafficking drugs, he was also “responsible for the slaughter of hundreds of government officials, police, prosecutors, judges, journalists, and innocent bystanders” (Kelley). By spending large amounts of money on public projects to help others, many saw him as a very generous, caring man. Most people only saw the Pablo Escobar that loved to share his wealth with those who needed it in his hometown. They did not see what he was really capable of, commit...
