The realistic fiction book, Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, by Matthew Dick, was very heartwarming and enjoyable. This book takes place in the town and world of young Max Delaney around the year 2013. The story is told from the point of Max's imaginary friend Budo who goes with Max to school and even wanders on his own to have his own adventures. This book's conclusion will warm and break your heart. The book happens in the time span of a few months with days skipped over. They main characters of this book are Max and Budo. While the story follows Max it is told by Budo making them the main characters. Max is 8-9 years old and he imagined Budo when he was only 4. Some people say Max has Asperger's but Max's dad says that he is just a ¨late bloomer¨ (Dick, 16). Budo has been alive for 5 years and looks like a human unlike most imaginary friends. Max imagined him ¨much older than him. Probably a teenager,¨ (Dick 5). Some of the other characters included Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Gosk, and Max’s parents. Like Max I sometimes relied on my imaginary friends for company and even played games with them like Max does. Near the end of the book Budo has to choose to do the right thing for Max or for himself. I feel like this is a common problem in movies or books with someone having to pick between helping themselves or helping someone else. This also happens often in real life which for me, makes the book or movie seem more realistic. Almost all the books I have read have had this dilemma in them but it is often obvious what the character with choose. For example in Harry Potter you can be certain that Harry will choose to save his friends but in this book it makes you question what choose the character will make I recommend this book to kids in middle school who are a bit more mature, that enjoy having a book touch their
