Argument Essay
Where would we be Without Animal Testing?
Is the use of animals in research justified? Should animal experimentation be permitted? Should these animals be liberated? A logical person would say the benefits justify the research. Without animal testing, products would be based on theory. No one would want to use something, which may damage eyes, be poisonous, cancerous, and cause birth defects. Animals used in testing are not from the endangered species list; also many of the types of animals used are killed each year by rat or mouse traps, animal control, exterminators, and animal shelters. Animal testing reaps great benefits such as finding effective drugs to combat disease, improve surgical procedures, and make products safe.
When someone goes to the store and buys a product, or is prescribed medication, they don’t have to worry if the product is safe to use nor should they. The entire human race benefits from animal research. “Without animal research, medical science would come to a total standstill”(O’Neil 210). It is not as if Scientist and researchers just sit in their labs all day and torture animals for fun. Not to mention animal use is being reduced as much as possible, “most scientist are glad to use alternative test because they are usually faster and cheaper than test on animals”(Yount 72). However, “you cannot study kidney transplantation or diarrhea or high bloodpressure on a computer screen”(O’Neil 212). Besides, “Animal research has led to vaccines against diptheria, rabies, tuberculosis, polio, measles, mumps, cholera, whooping cough, and rubella. It has meant eradication of smallpox, effective treatment for diabetes and control of infection with powerful antibiotics. The cardiac pacemaker, microsurgery to reattach severed limbs, and heart, kidney, lung, liver and other transplants are all possible because of animal research”(O’Neil 210).
In short animal testing saves lives. Animal testing helps find causes, and cures of disease, genetic defects, birth defects, and abnormalities.
The information that animals have provided scientists over the past decades has changed society, and is still changing society for the better. Millions of lives have been saved with the use of animal testing and many more will be saved with continued research. However, there are many who dismiss this monumental achievement completely and oppose the use of animals in laboratory research. Though many find this practice to be
Without animal research, cures for such diseases as typhoid, diphtheria, and polio might never have existed. Without animal research, the development of antibiotics and insulin would have been delayed. Without animal research, many human beings would now be dead. However, because of animal testing, 200,000 dogs, 50,000 cats, 60,000 primates, 1.5 million hamsters, and uncounted millions of rats and mice are experimented upon and die each year, as living fodder for the great human scientific machine. Some would say that animal research is an integral part of progress; unfortunately, this is often true. On the whole, animal testing is a necessary evil that should be reduced and eliminated whenever possible.
“Arguments against animal testing” by Natasha Bantwal was written for the general audience World Health Organization is interested within the articles concerning animal testing. This article is narrow as a result of Brantwal uses several facts to validate her opinion. In this article, Bantwal has with success, coordinated Aristotle’s tools of logos, ethos and pathos. For example, Bantwal embodies an ethos, otherwise referred to as the argument by character in her writing. Reading through this article, Bantwal energetic comprehension and knowledge of animal testing is clear. To provide herself much additional credit, she quotes a specialist who additionally accepts animal testing is truly not beneficial.
Writing this paper did not affect my original line of thinking in regards to the topic. I support animal rights in every way, and am extremely against any sort of testing. Observing the “necessities” of animal testing did not, in any way, alter my negative view of animal experimentation.
Using animals for research and experimentation has led to cancer survival rates to continue to rise. Using animals for research and experimentation has helped the survival rates rise to many other different sicknesses and diseases. People who suffer from diabetes rely on insulin that was developed through experiments in rabbits and dogs.
Animal testing has been used for developing and researching cures for medical conditions. For example, the polio vaccine, chemotherapy for cancer, insulin treatment for diabetes, organ transplants and blood transfusions are just some of the important advances that have come from research on animals (“Animal Testing”). Consuming animals for research benefits in developing various treatments and also benefits in discovery better methods for cures. According to the article “Animal Testing”, it says that the underlying rationale for the use of animal testing is that living organisms provide interactive, dynamic systems that scientists can observe and manipulate in order to understand normal and pathological functioning as well as the effectiveness of medical interventions. It relies on the physiological and anatomical similarities between humans and other animals (MacClellan, Joel). Meaning that animals have the same body components and features as humans and is the best thing to research on to better understand the human development. Even though several argue that animal testing is harming the animals, one has to think back to all the benefits that has come from it. There may be a little remorse for endangering animal lives, but realizing how far medicine has come makes it worth the while.
This topic may be one of the most ever argued, but I feel that the only argument against animal testing that people use is, “No, please, animal testing can kill all of the animals, it’s cruel, it’s inhumane, and you’re a terrible human being.” Okay, Of course this isn’t untrue, but like I said, animal testing can bring many benefits. For example, animal testing has led to the founding of many life-saving cures and treatments. According to the US-based Foundation Biomedical Research, “animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century - for both human and veterinary health. From antibio...
Millions of animals are used to test consumer products, but they also become victims of experiments for medical research. In The Ethics of Animal Research (2007) both authors state that there have been many medical advances with the development of medicines and treatments as a result of research conducted on animals (para 1). These medical improvements have helped many people be able to enjoy life, but some people still believe that animal research is mean and avoidable .... ... middle of paper ... ...
That animal testing is benificial. "The next time an animal rights group claims that animal research provides no human benefit, stop and think about the astonishing medical advances made over the last fifty years. Because scientists experimented with research animals, vaccines were developed, new lifesaving medical and surgical techniques were perfected, diseases were cured”extending our lives and alleviating incalculable amounts of human suffering." (Smith, Wesley J.). Although it may be true that animal testing does help alleviate human suffering to an extent, it does not fully help us understand how things will react when it is a human using
According to the book “Science, Medicine, and Animals” by Committee on the Use of Animals in Research, National Academy of Sciences (1991), the animals also provide protection to a lot of endangered animals. The scientists can invent medicine, which is used to treat animal diseases, from animal experiments. Animal experiments can study the habit of animals, and help build suitable living environment for endangered animals. In addition, the animals who born in the laboratory have higher survival rate then the animals born in the nature. The most important thing is that, after the experiments, the animals will be released to the natural. So, the animal experiments can help animal
Animal testing saves so many human lives by the simplest research that doesn’t harm animals but helps them also. Animal testing consist of new chemicals, pesticides, consumer products, drugs, medical devices, vaccines and many other products. Some americans refuse to donate enough organs to help save lives so testing animals finds way to help saves lives. Animal research has saved and improved millions of animals and people. Today’s medicine we got from animal testing. Without animal testing we wouldn’t have a better understanding of disease and the way the body works. Also it has contributed to many medical advances today. Everyone has probably benefited from vaccines and antibiotics to prevent and treat infections. Lately research are tackling
...ines to stop dangerous diseases (Paul). Animal research has played a vital role in medical science for the last century. Animal testing has been very essential to medical research and have led to discovering new tools to help individuals. Because of animal testing we have discovered new medicines and procedures to benefit people such as, antibiotics, blood transfusions, organ-transplantations, and vaccinations. Animal organizations and activist has little knowledge on medical research, so they don’t know how this research benefits us. Animal testing has proven to be a very important part in medical studies and it will continue to be for generations to generations. Animal testing will never end but evolve and lead us to further medical understanding. Without animal testing we would be expose to chemical, Air-Bourne, and contagious diseases this world will hand to us.
Animal testing hasn’t been beneficiary towards any scientific breakthrough or discovery. Elias Zourhini says, “Animal testing has been useless” he is one of the main people who are strongly making a push to try and stop animal testing as a whole. “There have been thousands of dead and injured animals in the past years or so and there has been any reward or safety ensured because of these animals. Animals have been being used for testing for many years now, and especially now, the number of animals that are being used to be experimented on are extremely high. However, you may not know that laboratories aren’t required to publish how many animals they used or how many experiments conducted. Maybe that would help to find out especially what animals need to be strongly protected against testing. “Every laboratory should publish an annual statement setting forth plainly the number and kind of experiments and the methods of conducting them” (Gould qd. in Leffingwell 211). This would help many things and especially organizations that are protesting, to give reasons and facts about testing. Animals are used and then unaccounted for. Truly, you may never know h...
Supporters of animal research believe that animal experimentation and research is ethically acceptable as long as the treatment of the animals is humane and well-regulated. Some of the reasons why people support animal research includes the furthering of human well-being, providing the means to cure disease and advance medicine and science, the belief that it is a better alternative to using humans in research, and the belief that its benefits outweigh the costs (Saucier, 2006).
Animal Rights Essay Many people have different opinions on animal right. I believe that animal testing is a good thing and we should keep on doing it too ensure the safety of humans. Many people believe that animal testing is a bad thing and cruel to animals because they deserve the same rights as humans but animal testing has saved many human lives and has found many different cures. I believe animal testing is a good thing because animal testing has contributed to many cures and treatments, animals also benefit from animal testing, and even though I see why people might think that humans should consider stopping animal testing I believed that we shouldn’t.
