Maus is a graphic memoir by Art Spiegelman, about a father, Vladek, survivor of the Holocaust and a son, Arty, who wants to know what was it like living during the Holocaust era. During the holocaust years, Vladek was advised by a rabbi that his tattooed number will bring him luck. Throughout the story, he continues to personify the luck his number represents by being persistent and hardworking. Despite suffering starvation, thirst, and not feeling well, Vladek continues to remain humble by helping his fellow inmates. Many years passed after the war ended, Vladek was portrayed as this conservative man, but there was a reason behind that mask. Arty did not meet his brother Richieu because he already passed away when Arty was born. However, he did meet his mother Anja before she commits suicide. Arty grew up as a fortunate and lucky son because he did not experience the past that his father, mother, and brother experienced. At times, Arty acts like a spoiled brat. He would take advantage of his mother and not be gentle with her. He also did not treat his father well as he ought to. Although, Arty mistreated his family members that did not mean he did not care for them because he did. He felt guilty for being unkind to them. Also, Arty has this curiosity towards his father’s and mother’s past during the Holocaust years. An example would be like in Chapter 1 of Maus within the second panel, the author wrote about his last encounter with his father and that was after his mother committed suicide. He also wrote about the last time he saw his father and that was after his father’s two heart attacks. As a good father, Vladek started telling Arty about what happened and how everything all began. Vladek never ceased to deny Arty or neglect his presence because he now only has one son. He knows how it feels to have no family supporting you. He knows that appreciating the little things in life will make such a big impact on a person’s life. She is also romantically in love with her older brother Arty. The love that she has for Arty blinds her, she does not realize that Arty is a manipulator and also a bit of a sociopath. Elly really hates it whenever Arty and Iphy are together. Iphy is always the one that wants to do the right thing and be nice to everyone, unlike her twin sister. Elly can easily control Iphy and convince her to do things that she never wants, so Iphy is not as strong as Elly and sometimes can be a pushover.
In Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, Art Spiegelman presents his father’s Holocaust narrative alongside his own personal narrative, especially with regards to his relationship with Vladek. In Maus, Vladek is dependent on his skills and even his flaws to survive. He comes to make these traits a part of him for the rest of his life as he strives to survive no matter what. While these flaws helped him survive as a young man but these same traits estrange him with those that care about him such as his son. In a way there are two Vladeks in Maus, the one in the past that he speaks about and the one that is actually present.
The graphic novels Maus and Maus II by Art Spiegelman possess the power to make the reader understand the pain and suffering that takes place during the Holocaust. Spiegelman uses animals instead of humans in his graphic novels to represent the different races of people. The use of visual mediums in Art Spiegelman’s Maus enhances the reading of the narrative. The graphics throughout the novel help the reader fully understand everything that is happening.
The past and present are two completely different moments, separated by a constantly growing space of time. Though they’re quite different from each other and separated in many ways, there are still apparent connections between the two. In Art Spiegelman’s graphic novels Maus I: My Father Bleeds History and Maus II: And Here My Troubles Begin, Spiegelman integrates the concept of past versus present, most apparent in his relationship with his father. As Artie’s relationship with Vladek improves as Vladek recites his history, the present time and the past begin to blend into each other. At the beginning of Maus I, Artie is oblivious to his father’s rough experience in the holocaust, disconnected from his father and without a solid relationship. However, as Vladek recites his history, Art’s relationship with him begins to improve little by little and the lines between the past and present dissolve. By the end of the story, Vladek and Artie’s relationship has improved greatly and the lines between the past and present are completely dissolved.
Communication is not only limited to verbal interactions, but the actions between two individuals. Vladek’s experience as a Holocaust survivor shapes his mentality throughout the entirety of both volumes. His tendencies appear odd at first, but they begin to make sense as the novel progresses. Art attempts to interview his father over multiple sessions; however, Vladek tends to ramble or steer off topic. In volume one Art tries to acquire information about his father’s experience with army training and on the field. Despite that, Vladek begins to talk about his father. He adds, “the next year father wanted I would again do the same thing, but I begged him and at 22 went into the army” (Spiegelman p.47). Art realizes the change in subject, and tries to get his father to continue with his specific timeline. The act of digressing occurs multiple times in Maus, showing that Vladek is incapable of tell his story to the most accurate extent. In addition, the duo tends to argue over trivial matters. Art voices his frustration in volume two as he says, “mainly I remember arguing with him and being told that I couldn’t do anything as well as he could” (Spiegelman p.44). Vladek lived a normal life before the war, got married to Anja a daughter of a millionaire. He also got Richieu his first son. They all lived a happy life for awhile until the Swastika was raised as an emblem of the German Nazi party. That’s when the fairytale ended. Vladek went to the army and got captured by the Nazi. Back to luckiness, he could easily died at the P.O.W camp, disease, hunger or even get beat up by the Nazi. On page 48, the bullets came in his direction, the bullet ricochet on his helmet, he could have died if the soldier aim better or if he didn’t have the helmet, he could have easily been dead. Being resourceful also helped him in the war. On page 53, he bathed in the river in the winter, unlike his soldier mates, he didn’t get infection on his frostbites.
In Maus, Art Spiegelman does not make any apologies about what he includes or leaves out from his story. Maus is not meant to be a story that encompasses World War II or the Holocaust, but rather, a story about the life of his father, Vladek Spiegelman:
The films The Searchers and Avatar both make use of the master narratives of regulating social order and disorder. One is used as a way to reinforce this narrative, while the latter is shaped more towards critiquing the overall of ideal of the American social order. The struggle presented by an external threats in both films give the opportunity of interpreting and contrasting the master narrative and the effects that can come from imbalances in social orders.
There he stands atop the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial, in the nations’ capital, at a podium, speaking to the world. The crowds faces full of hope. Ears opened wide and clear, for the Dr. is speaking today. He is speaking from the heart and telling the nation that he has a “DREAM.” Dr. King had a dream and as most people think that it is geared towards blacks and whites, it’s not. Dr. King wanted equality between everybody. He wanted freedom from racism and prejudice throughout the nation. He was very good in getting the emotional perspective of persuasion across to his audience. King was a very inspirational man; his words were so true and full of meaning. He spoke to everyone and got everybody involved. This is why people followed him and why I think this is the most persuasive piece we have read. He not only implies his wants but he carries along with him the wants and needs of every man or woman ever treated poorly because of the color of their skin or their beliefs. There is a certain unexplainable meaning and feeling when a man like King steps up in front of the world and says, “I have a Dream.”

In the novel, the Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, the main protagonist, Bilbo Baggins along with thirteen dwarves embark on a journey to the Lonely Mountain to defeat the evil dragon, Smaug, and to take back their treasure. Throughout this journey, it is evident that Bilbo’s character changes into an unlikely hero. Due to the many adventures that the group embarks on, Bilbo is given the opportunity to develop his character in the beginning, middle and end of the novel.
Hesiod’s Theogony and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are both myths that begin as creation myths, explaining how the universe and, later on, humans came to be. These types of myths exist in every culture and, while the account of creation in Hesiod’s Theogony and the Enuma Elish share many similarities, the two myths differ in many ways as well. Both myths begin creation from where the universe is a formless state, from which the primordial gods emerge. The idea of the earth and sky beginning as one and then being separated is also expressed in both myths.
During the Great Depression, while the competitors were cutting costs and reusing outdated designs, Kress was expanding and building more elaborate stores than their previous ones. The architecture was referred to as an “emporium” evoking an elegant atmosphere more suited to a fine cloth or furniture store in New York rather than the five & dime stores dotting small town America. Many wonder what the driving force was behind these design decisions, especially during a national time of economic recession. Perhaps simply to outpace the competition, but perhaps more importantly Samuel Kress was an avid art collector and a proponent of public art enhancing a community. In this way the Kress legacy of the brand became more than a retail business, it became a symbol of small town civic pride.
