The ideas of gender equality have been a major problem in every generation. People have always taken advantage of people by judging them from their gender. The problems are mostly seen back in the day around the 19th, which we learned from Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her opinions on women’s rights and Mary Cassatt had portray the roles of women into the painting to let us see. From reading “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” I understand more how women were treated by men and how their freedoms are limited. Meanwhile, it was important for men to be educated due to the fact that they went to work.“I think a man who under the present state of things has the moral hardihood to take an education at the hands of woman and at such an expense to her.” Stanton’s mention that, society feels that it’s a cost for women to be educated which is why it’s not useful. Cassatt’s painting didn’t really show much about the women education. But, from the Philadelphia Art Museum trip, I can see other painting that portrays the education of women such as “Mother and Child”. Most paintings of women are always portraying in mother and child categories. From this ideas, it shows that most women role is to take care of the children because that’s all they can do since they’re not educated to do other things. Looking from another viewpoint, Cassatt’s also might want to show the audience in a feminine perspective, by drawing both young girl and woman sitting in front of the carriage and making the women drive instead of the men. By doing this, it will convince the audience to believe that women aren’t weak as the society think, they can also do things that normal men do. Women and men have always treated each other with no respect, as they always think themselves as the dominant one, or one with the most power by using gender and education as their judgment. Stanton’s mentioned that household with male or women dominant will always be a problem inside the family, as no one will be willing to agree with each other decision. When men have the power they will take control of the women’s decision such as, stay home and take care of the kids, or cook for the husband every day. They are always in command, which the women will eventually feel like they have no freedom to do anything else. On the other hand, if women are dominant, then men will have to listen to everything, which is called “Hen-pecked Husband.” They will eventually not feel like a free man, all they do is respect the women. Stanton’s think that we must have equality, freedom, and not use gender to judge on the decision we make as she mentioned, “The only happy households we now see are those in which Husband and wife share equally in counsel and government. There can be no true dignity or independence where there is subordination, no happiness without freedom.” From looking at the mood and tones of the painting, I can sense the sadness of both girl and woman in front of the carriage. Women were only second-class citizens. They were supposed to stay home cook, clean, achieve motherhood and please their husbands. The constitution did not allow women to vote until the 19th amendment in 1971 due to gender discrimination. Deeper in the chapter it discusses the glass ceiling. Women by law have equal opportunities, but most business owners, which are men, will not even take them serious. Women also encounter sexual harassment and some men expect them to do certain things in order for them to succeed in that particular workplace. Today, women and men have equal rights, however, not long ago men believed women were lower than them. During the late eighteenth century, men expected women to stay at home and raise children. Women were given very few opportunities to expand their education past high school because colleges and universities would not accept females. This was a loss for women everywhere because it took away positions of power for them. It was even frowned upon if a woman showed interest in medicine or law because that was a man’s place, not a woman’s, just like it was a man’s duty to vote and not a woman’s.
This discrimination towards this sex was reinforced by the idea that women was made for man. Not only was this idea prevalent within society but it furthermore is resonated through the laws and documents the government put in place. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony fought to establish equality between both sexes within the nation. This is illustrated within the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions at Seneca Falls when these women stated, “The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object he establishment of an absolute tyranny over her.” This quote expresses the past of women rights and how from the beginning of time women have been seen as inferior to man. This furthermore resonated to express the idea that women were not only inferior but also a material object in a man’s life. Stanton and Anthony put a large emphasis into this ideal, making it their driving force into establishing women’s rights in America.

However, with perseverance and determination, both early colonists, and women, have overcome these things. Women, now have every right that men do. As for the colonist; we have our own government, not a British one. “The Declaration of Independence,” by Thomas Jefferson uses pathos and diction to express why the colonies need to be free and independent from British rule. “The Declaration of Sentiments,” by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott uses logos and analogies to reveal how unequally women are treated. Finally, “A Disappointed Woman,” by Lucy Stone uses ethos and imagery to describe how women were treated and to demand equality for them. “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal” (Stanton and Mott).
Throughout history, women have struggled with, and fought against, oppression. They have been held back and weighed down by the sexist ideas of a male dominated society which has controlled cultural, economic and political ideas and structures. During the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s women became more vocal and rebuked sexism and the role that had been defined for them. Fighting with the powerful written word, women sought a voice, equality amongst men and an identity outside of their family. In many literary writings, especially by women, during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s, we see symbols of oppression and the search for gender equality in society.
In contrast, men have been seen as more dominate than women because of their masculine abilities and other traits and most importantly their profound responsibility of being the provider and head of the household. Americans constantly uses theses two distinct stereotypes that in many cases present many biases regarding gender codes in America. Things have changed over time the women are no longer just house wives taking care of the house and children waiting for their husband to come home from his nine to five occupations. Andrea L. Miller explains in her article “The Separate Spheres Model of Gendered Inequality” that, “A common theme in the study of gender is the idea that men and women belong in distinct spheres of society, with men being particularly fit for the workplace and women being particularly fit for the domestic domain” (Miller 2). All women should hold rights equal to men because a society governed by men and women as a unit would promote stability and peace. In “The Destructive Male” written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Stanton argues through diction and the employment of ethos, pathos, and logos that giving rights to women, and allowing women to hold positions in politics and government, would be beneficial to the whole of society.
It was not until the early 20th century, that women officially gained the right to vote and participate in legislation. Unlike men, women were deprived of their basic rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They were discouraged from receiving education, and their achievements were not recognized as they were for male counterparts. As a result of women suffering, Elizabeth Cady Stanton decided to petition for women suffrage by drafting the Seneca Falls Declaration, a lengthy document written to resolve inequality between men and women. Through the use of a few select rhetorical devices, Stanton effectively argues for the importance of equal rights and opportunities for women in the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions.”
Sixty- nine years after the Declaration of Independence, one group of women gathered together and formed the Seneca Falls Convention. Prior and subsequent to the convention, women were not allowed to vote because they were not considered equal to men. During the convention, Elizabeth Cady Stanton delivered the “Declaration of Sentiments.” It intentionally resembles the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal…” (Stanton, 466). She replaced the “men” with “men and women” to represent that women and men should be treated equally. Stanton and the other women in the convention tried to fight for voting rights. Dismally, when the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced to the Congress, the act failed to be passed. Even though women voiced their opinions out and urged for justice, they could not get 2/3 of the states to agree to pass the amendment. Women wanted to tackle on the voting inequalities, but was resulted with more inequalities because people failed to listen to them. One reason why women did not achieve their goals was because the image of the traditional roles of women was difficult to break through. During this time period, many people believed that women should remain as traditional housewives.
This source provided the unique perspective of what was thought to be the perfect household, with a man who worked and a wife who cooked and cleaned. However, it also showed how a woman could also do what a man can do, and in some cases they could do it even better. This work is appropriate to use in this essay because it shows how men talked down to their wives as if they were children. Mary Wollstonecraft was an advocate of women 's rights, a philosopher, and an English writer. One of Wollstonecraft’s best works was “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” (1792). In her writing, she talks about how both men and women should be treated equal, and reasoning could create a social order between the two. Throughout Western history it was known to have this Patriarchal system in which the men are the head of the family, and community, during which these spheres between the male and female were divided, each having their own set of roles: the male in the public view and the women in the private view. The men worry about what is going on outside the home like politics, money, control over property while the women take care of what happens on the inside of the home doing things like taking care of the children and doing the house work. With these roles set in place the women have had a hard time being respected because of this Patriarchy.

Feminism, as a complex movement with many different branches, has and will continue to be incredibly influential in changing lives.
Women have always been essential to society. Fifty to seventy years ago, a woman was no more than a house wife, caregiver, and at their husbands beck and call. Women had no personal opinion, no voice, and no freedom. They were suppressed by the sociable beliefs of man. A woman’s respectable place was always behind the masculine frame of a man. In the past a woman’s inferiority was not voluntary but instilled by elder women, and/or force. Many, would like to know why? Why was a woman such a threat to a man? Was it just about man’s ability to control, and overpower a woman, or was there a serious threat?
