Do you recognize the name Martin Handford? The answer is probably no. But, he's created something you may be familiar with - Waldo. That's right, the Waldo wearing big, round glasses and a red and white-striped shirt with matching cap. Martin is the author and illustrator behind the iconic Where's Waldo franchise, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012. Martin was born in London, England in 1956. From an early age, he spent a great deal of time drawing. As a child, his influences behind his illustrations were movies and his toy soldiers. He attempted to capture the action he witnessed from the movies and from playing with his soldiers in his drawings. His sketches came out as crowds of stick figures. Later in life, he attended an art school. He worked in an insurance office to help finance his way through school. His interest in drawing large crowds and capturing action continued. He specialized in portraying historic battle scenes. After college, he worked as a freelance illustrator. To work freelance means to work various jobs on a temporary basis versus being employed permanently. His specialty, again, was creating crowd scenes for various clients. …show more content…
