Do you recognize the name Martin Handford? The answer is probably no. But, he's created something you may be familiar with - Waldo. That's right, the Waldo wearing big, round glasses and a red and white-striped shirt with matching cap. Martin is the author and illustrator behind the iconic Where's Waldo franchise, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012. Martin was born in London, England in 1956. From an early age, he spent a great deal of time drawing. As a child, his influences behind his illustrations were movies and his toy soldiers. He attempted to capture the action he witnessed from the movies and from playing with his soldiers in his drawings. His sketches came out as crowds of stick figures. Later in life, he attended an art school. He worked in an insurance office to help finance his way through school. His interest in drawing large crowds and capturing action continued. He specialized in portraying historic battle scenes. After college, he worked as a freelance illustrator. Over a three week period in October 2002 a series of random sniper attacks paralyzed the Washington D.C. area. The shootings happened in in various establishments such as super markets, gas stations, restaurants and near schools turning normal tranquil areas into chaotic murder fields. There were no age group, gender or ethnicity that was safe, Victims were randomly selected and everyone was targeted. His first work as an illustrator was with a famous author named Bill Martin Jr. Martin asked Carle to illustrate his book after he saw an advertising piece he’d done of a red lobster (“Eric Carle”). This is when his illustrating career truly began. Over the years he has not only had numerous successes in his artwork but has even written his own books. Stephen King was born 9-21-47 in Portland, Maine. King has black hair that is thick, he has blue eyes and wears glasses. His childhood was during the Civil War, where he participated in many outdoor recreational activities including hunting, fishing, boating, etc. He also liked to draw sketched and doodle around, mainly soldiers in uniforms. His father was a newspaper man and told him many stories of the west, sparking his love for it. He went to college for a little bit, Yale School of Fine Arts, but dropped out after his father became ill and died. He then tried the world of business, but that only lasted a few months. During the summer of 1879 he met Eva Adele Caten, and became infatuated with her. In the fall of 1884 the two were married. Most of his paintings are either oil on canvas or oil on board. He traveled and painted extensively in Europe and also did a series of paintings documenting the building of the Panama Canal. In some cases he took his easel and paints right into the canal excavation sites to capture the subject he had in mind.
