In this passage, Mairs presents herself as a self-aware, tough, and capable person. She chooses to describe herself as a “cripple;” she feels that it is a “clean word, straightforward and precise.” Mairs uses rhetorical features such as simple, loose, and inverted sentences, repetition, zeugma, juxtaposition, and semantics, to advance her narrative. Arguably the most striking of the aforementioned rhetorical structures is Maris’ repetition and use of simple, loose, and inverted sentences.
