Ivanka Trump’s latest book, Women Who Work, has raised controversy as to whether this book is beneficial to the modern working woman. Women Who Work, is a self-help book that contains essays by business people and advice from Ivanka Trump on achieving self-actualization. However, being the daughter of a wealthy business man prevents Ivanka Trump from empathizing with readers. Trump claims this novel as initiative to inspire working women in all dimensions of their lives. The main flaw within Women Who Work, is that it glamorizes the American working woman and fails to recognize the ones working in low-wage service jobs. Sejal Singh agrees when she writes:

Ivanka Trump claims to be a Feminist and provides an idealistic example of a woman who is able to easily balance work with life. Jill Filipovic writes in The New York Times, how Women Who Work is an example of “fake feminism” as the book hardly applies to American women at all. Filipovic states, “Ms. Trump has written a book called Women Who Work, so must presumably think she has advice to offer other women. But trying to emulate the Ivanka model without her financial means is a precarious path.” It is difficult to apply Trump’s suggested methods without her financial means to do so. Some have applauded Ivanka Trump and her successes with Women Who Work, Kate Taylor of Business Insider, addresses some overlooked points in Trump’s book. Ivanka Trump wrote the book prior to her father’s presidency. Taylor states, “There are a handful of interesting tidbits in the book that help illuminate the powerful first daughter.” Taylor acknowledges popular scrutiny and emphasizes Ivanka Trump’s power in writing a book for American working …show more content…
While Taylor shows how Ivanka Trump has displayed a great deal of power in writing her novel, she does not address what is fundamentally lacking in Women Who Work. Several articles seem to be scrutinizing the novel in the same way. Jia Tolentino states in her article “Ivanka Trump Wrote a Painfully Oblivious Book for Basically No One” contained within The New Yorker, “Women Who Work is mostly composed of artless jargon (“All women benefit immeasurably by architecting their lives”) and inspirational quotes you might find by Googling “inspirational quotes.” The quotes within this book are again lacking in originality and do little to benefit the American working woman. Ivanka Trump claims to be a feminist, and her actions of trying to promote change within politics by earning more parental leave in most firms are contributing to the feminist movement. However, her book has been considered to be a step backwards since her advice on getting ahead in one’s career is coming from a woman who already has a head start. Work-life balance is easier for her because of the household assistance she receives. Since the Industrial Revolution in the United States of America, working conditions for women and minorities have not been given equal pay or top positions in the work place. Women being degraded by the men in charge, and minorities constantly at odds with one another so they will not form a Union. Such things keep those with low-status in the job in line, and not feel they are equal to the ones in charge. People from other countries are in search for a better life elsewhere, and take the risk of going to the United States illegally to seek out the American Dream. The articles Working at Bazooms by Meika Loe and At a Slaughterhouse, Some Things Never Die by Charlie LeDuff deal with the working conditions for women and minorities. Workers in both articles have to deal with having terrible working conditions, harassment in the workplace, low-status within the job, and the constant fear of job loss.
Hook argues that Sandberg neglects to acknowledge the influence women have on society, but rather works to change it: “The vast majority of men in our society, irrespective of a race, embrace patriarchal values; they do not embrace a vision or practice of gender equality either at work or in the domestic household” (668). In short, we are not equal if one gender controls the other. Sandberg illustrates and describes her trickle-down theory showing women being at the top of corporate ladders would make a positive impact in the workforce. She backs up her theory by claiming that “imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchal corporate worlds Sandberg want women to lean into encourages competition over corporation”
Works such as “Faces in the Hands,” “Awake in a Strange Landscape,” “Hanging in, Solo,” “The Cultural Worker,” and “The Common Woman” display the difficulties that women experienced as they entered professions in the 1980s to 2005. “Faces in the Hands” by Carolyn Chute was written to show the mistreatment of all workers. In “Awake in a Strangle Landscape” by Jan Beatty, we learned the obstacles of women who were placed in jobs that were traditionally reserved for women. “Hanging in, Solo” by Susan Eisenberg reviews the difficulty of being one of the first women to enter the electrical brotherhood. “The Cultural Worker” by Sue Doro was written to demonstrate the difference between female and male workers as female workers are mothers and are strong influences in the home. In “The Common Woman” by Judy Grahn, we learn the restrictions of women placed in traditional female work areas. “Faces in the Hands,” “Awake in a Strange Landscape,” “Hanging in, Solo,” “The Cultural Worker,” and “The Common Woman” analyze how women have the difficulty of facing verbal harassment when entering male professions, restrictions when placed in jobs based on gender, different work experiences compared to men because of family needs, but also similar work experiences because both genders are exploited in the workplace.
For several decades, most American women occupied a supportive, home oriented role within society, outside of the workplace. However, as the mid-twentieth century approached a gender role paradigm occurred. The sequence of the departure of men for war, the need to fill employment for a growing economy, a handful of critical legal cases, the Black Civil Rights movement seen and heard around the nation, all greatly influenced and demanded social change for human and women’s rights. This momentous period began a social movement known as feminism and introduced a coin phrase known in and outside of the workplace as the “wage-gap.”

Equality for Women in the business world always has been a reason for debate. However the article "Why It's So Hard For Working Women To Get Ahead, And What We Can Do About It", written by Jillian Berman is written to get employers to make it easier on the female members of their teams.The article was posted in the beginning of 2014 in The Huffington Post. Jillian is an Associate Business Editor for the Huffington Post. She is an opinion based writer who uses her "freedom of speech" to write about many different topics. In this article, Jillian discusses the shyness that women experience when in the working field which keeps them from reaching higher positions. By writing this article, Jillian is putting out a request to employers to assist women since they tend to be shyer, more modest, and have a hard time "selling themselves to their employers". The article written informally, begins with Jillian's personal experience. By including personal details and supporting opinions, Jillian makes her article extremely effective.

Women make up over 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, yet only 14 percent of executive officer positions within companies are filled by women. Within the Fortune 500 CEOs, only 21 of them are women. The United States prides itself on equality and justice, but the majority of the population is not adequately represented in leadership roles. It is time for the entire country to reevaluate its internal gender biases. Women are taking strides to overcome the centuries-old tradition of men being the breadwinners and women taking care of the family and having low-demanding jobs. Biases do not just come from men, as it is proven that women are just as biased against themselves. Society puts more pressure on men to be successful while not expecting as much from women. Men typically attribute their successes to themselves, while women underestimate themselves and attribute their successes to luck or hard work. This lack of self-confidence can be traced back to years of women constantly doubting themselves (Sandberg). Women need to follow Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg’s advice written in her book “Lean In”: “But feeling confident—or pretending that you feel confident—is necessary to reach for opportunities. It’s cliché, but opportunities are rarely offered; they’re seized” (Sandberg 34). Willing women have to overcome societal traditions and sit at the table. It can be concluded that women are treated in terms of stereotyped impressions of being the lowest class and greater evidence can be found that there are large disparities between the women and the men 's class. It can be seen that women are more likely to play casual roles as they are most likely to take seasonal and part time work so that they can work according to their needs. They are hampered from progressing upward into the organizations as they face problems like lack of health insurance, sexual harassments, lower wage rates, gender biases and attitudes of negative behavior.
