One of my most notable long-term goals was to get back on my feet after the death of my father. It was the worst time in my life and I was at an all time low, academically, socially and emotionally.
To this day, I am still dealing with my emotional problems. But I can say that I am doing much better academically and emotionally. Come the end of my junior year, I knew I had to change for the better.
For the past two years, I’d been doing a college readiness program called upward bound. Each summer, I resided at the university of Dayton and took classes. I treated this program just as I would treat school. I wanted nothing more but to succeed and receive good grades. During the summer, I made sure that I performed to the best of my ability.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
Being a part of Appalachian State University’s Honors College would be an amazing privilege. According to the university, the Honors College has been providing superior education to intellectually-motivated students for more than thirty five years. Being a part of the Honors College would help me promptly reach the personal, intellectual, and professional goals I set for myself as well as optimize my college experience.
I was first introduced to the Upward Bound program in my freshman year. I finally decided that I should apply when I started having trouble in my geometry class. I’m hoping that through Forward Bound that I can find help and encouragement to succeed in the class. Along with the desire to discover a path for my future. The idea of the six week summer program and how it gives a high school a feel for what college could be like in the future is something I want to experience. I like to start things with an idea of what is expected of me and how to accomplish that expectation and I feel that the summer program is my best option to ever gain such experience that could be useful in the future. Both of my parents went to college but were unable to remain in semester classes long enough to obtain a degree in their majors.
My goal is to implement a similar program at the high school level where students are exposed to this level of support and companionship; all united in the same goal of helping each other succeed. It is also essential for students to witness what college is like before stepping inside for the first day of class. To see what college is like, and to experiment the environment goes a long way for students who are new to the experience. As I further my education, my main goals for graduate school are to gain the knowledge and skill set for the field that I am most passion about, which is recreation and sports. Taking the next step towards a master's degree is the academic challenge I want to take on. I found my passion for recreation through volunteering for multiple events while serving active-duty Navy. I have volunteered many hours in a program called Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD), which helps to promote positive environments for sailors through social organizations, community involvement and recreation events. Sophomore year was a year of misconception for me. I registered to take my first advanced placement classes - AP Psychology and AP Environmental Science - and I was up for the challenge. Eager to earn my A average, the challenges that awaited me hadn’t even crossed my mind. Naivety had blinded me and the thought of not living up to my own expectations was a possibility that I neglected to acknowledge. I was convinced that I was indomitable, unbeatable, and unshakable.
Graduation is two weeks away, which for most of us does not seem possible. As we look back at these past four long but fulfilling years, there are some things that we shall never forget. It’s hard to believe that at one point we were little freshmen entering into these doors, with no idea what was in store for us. Four years have passed since that first day, and we have made decisions that will frame our futures. After years of studying, filling out applications, scholarships, and taking tests, we are now thrown into the real world, where there are seldom retakes, second chances are only a memory of yesteryear, and honor codes are the way of life.
The next set of goal setting importance is my personal goals with the first being to over come the obstacles associated with returning to school.
When I was younger, I was always getting in trouble in school and not always doing my work when I had to. As a kid Teacher would always call my house because I was always talking, playing or not doing my work. Now that I’m older I’m more respectful of the people who trying to help me to get where I’m going in life. As time was passing by I had a lot of time to think about making it in college so I can finally have a higher education. Everyone should have personal goals that evolve around anything that needs to be accomplished. I set goals on a daily basis. One goal that I seem to have not truly focused on has been my college education. Considering all things, I decided I needed to focus on my college education. The first thing I needed to accomplish was to enroll in an institution for higher learning. Now that my enrollment is complete, I am an official student at the University enrolled in the undergraduate program for business management. As a student at the university, I now have to set personal goals so that I will be successful in my endeavors. My personal goals are to gain personal growth and development and graduate from my undergraduate program in business management with honors. After my completion of the undergraduate program I will then move on to a master's program.
So it began. Ever since the first day of freshman year, I put forth all my energy towards academics: I payed attention in every class, asked questions if I didn’t understand anything, took notes regardless if the information was or trivial or not, and studied rigorously until late in the night. The students also received a week vacation after the 8 week program was completed if they passed all classes with a C and had no behavior issues over the summer. There was also an end of the summer program were students performed and had their work on display for their families and the community. The program main goals were the following: 1.) Prepare Students for course work for the 2014-2015 school year 2.) Expose students to community service opportunities 3.) Expose students to a college/ University to learn about admissions 4.) Promote high self-esteem and skills to set and reach goals. The program as a whole was successful because it was evident that students were learning. Each week students were mailed a progress report which showed projects and assignments that were completed for each class. They were also taught in smaller classes and were given additional help from a teacher assistant who were certified teachers. The environment that the students were learning in was open environments were students were comfortable with asking for help.
