Yet it can also, again like all art forms, encourage us for self renewal and to become a better version than ourselves. Sometimes, I find while I read, that I become personally affected by the protagonist and other characters not only in the story, but by the beautiful artistry of the author. Jodi Picoult 's work strikes me that way. Her stories connect with me on personal levels to which I recognise where she is leading my thoughts and emotions, what strikes me as especially unique about her work is the deftness with which she can spin a phrase. The greatest strength of literature that I have come to recognise through writing this essay, and through all art, is the ability it has to expand an individuals perspective. Literature expands our minds and open our eyes to things we are not capable of seeing, feeling, and understanding in our world. I truly believe, that this is the powerful and actual effect of encountering all literature and art into our lives.
In moving forward, literature presents a very strong case of "thought expansion" in the way that either a singular person’s point of view or society at whole is explored along with conceptual thinking, creative thinking, the overlooked power of "mere ' vocabulary" and the communication of a writer 's inner-life. I think that the good novelist tries to provide his reader with vivid depictions of certain crucial and abiding patterns of human existence. This he attempts to do by reducing the chaos of human experience to artistic form. And when successful he provides the reader with a fresh vision of reality. For then through the symbolic action of his characters and plot he enables the reader to share forms of experience not immediately his own. Literature has played a large role in the way we perceive the world and it can affect the way in which we think about things. Edgar Allan Poe along with Mark Twain are two of the most influential authors that our world has ever seen. Their descriptiveness and diction has had a huge impact on their readers for centuries. Poe’s gothic style of writing was very enthralling and suspenseful; it left you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Whereas, Mark Twain was a very humorous author that intended to amuse all that read. The descriptiveness that was incorporated by these world-renown authors is tremendous.
The power of reading may be evident to many people around the world, but to others it may not be realized until that one magnificent work that changes the meaning of literature forever to them. Literature has never been my strong suit, but throughout this course and after many readings, literature began to speak to me. My perception of literature immediately changed after reading the short story The Lottery by Shirley and the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost.

Literature is a medium that offers insight and into the values, customs, and traditions of the different cultures that produce works all around the world. The works The Epic of Gilgamesh, Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis all illustrate what values their respective cultures held at the times of their creations. By observing and analysing each piece of literature with an open mind, we as readers are offered a window into the cultures of the works, which we can then use to gain insight and appreciation for different values, beliefs, and traditions.

Some people are unaware of what literature really means. Literature is referring to something that deals with a body of written works; within poems, plays and novels. Literature is used to explore human experiences in all possibilities. It is something that deals with our most apprehensiveness such as death, family, religion, good and evil, character, courage, and more. “While the information is represented in abstract form and generalized: facts, statistics, and data” (Gillespie, 20). It offers a different type of learning than just collecting information by, requiring us to experience things and participate. In conclusion, I would say that the power of literature is connoted exactly in this unparalleled symbolic order of language that can never produce or pin down a definite meaning but nevertheless passes on "the desire and curse of meaning”. It is what the transcendent signification of the text that leaves the reader always anticipating and curious and at the same time delighted from the pleasure this play of the authors brings to her/him. On the other hand there is always this uncanny component of meaning that cannot be clarified or rationalized but nevertheless is an intrinsic part to our reading experience.
